dont be a suck up, I just thought you were being serious at first,
Why is everyone fighting? :saddowns:
Practice lucid dreaming! If you get good enough you can spend a couple hours each night banging dream chicks and playing god.

Don't scold him for asking a question! At least he's asking for the reason behind it rather than just blindly accepting it without questioning it.
Sleep restores the body.
Without sleep we break down, slowly and painfully.

It's not entirely a brain thing; the rest of the body needs sleep as well.
There are a number of theories as to why we need sleep. However, there is not currently a predominant one. When you're asleep many of your major organs will still continue to work and the body will test out several functions, and sometimes you will experience more brain activity than when you're awake. The body doesn't necessarily need sleep, but obviously it does need rest. There is nothing suggesting that we will never be able to live without sleep, because currently nobody knows why we need it.
I know it's impossible to just stop sleeping. What I was asking is if it's possible with current science to modify the brain (and body) so that it can restore itself in the same way it does when sleeping, but while awake.

Holy shit.
That's all I have to say.
After 5 days without sleep your body will shut it self down ,and most of your sensors will shut down causing you to fall asleep or lie in a vegetable state.

I think a small scale experiment was actually done some time ago where the participants were allowed to do anything which they (the participants) considered rest, except sleeping. They had to cancel it after a couple of days because the participants were showing severe problems which disappeared after sleep.
I'd say the body does need sleep and not just rest. But again, just why we need sleep is beyond me as our bodies still function as they do when we are awake.
No.
You would die with 2-3 weeks of no sleep, it has been tested.

I barely sleep. I sleep 3-4 hours MAX. I spend my time by doing good stuff. Like working, reading, and just getting smarter on subjects i don't want to waste my daytime on. Sure i am tired almost 24/7 and so but it's damn worth it! Also, there's something called Blutsaft that can remove the sleepiness!
no you can't
rate me clocks
body needs a minimum of 20 minutes of sleep every three hours to function, so if you break your day into 8 three hour shifts then you'd maximize your time. It fucks with your bodily function after a while though, nothing serious, but it does have some side effects
It has been theorized that we need sleep for other reasons as well, REM sleep organizes the day's events into memories more effectively. When in deep stage 4 sleep where you're most relaxed your brain emits slow and steady delta waves, these function to signal the body to secrete a growth hormone. Sleep may also function to eliminate free radicals, which are toxins produced by our waking metabolism. Finally, sleep may also have an evolutionary link, it's theorized that it may have protected our ancestors from nocturnal predators. Those of us that didn't sleep at night were more prone to being eaten.

Insomnia has taught me you can survive much better than people would expect with little sleep.
However, unless we invent some super drug, we'd still die without it.
Your body gets as much rest during sleep as if you were lying on the couch, staring at the ceiling. It's the dreams you need; they provide a break from the many things going on all the time, and let your mind take a break.
It isn't something for the mind, it has to do with your body too. Some insomniacs can go almost a month without sleeping but without treatment, they'll die.
The longest a human being has ever intentionally gone without sleep is 11 days.
He was Randy Gardner its documented.
I remember seeing somewhere that at around 4 to 5 days you start hallucinating and noises seem amplified and some noises are only in your head but don't hold me to that.
You can go through micro sleeps. The brain automatically shuts down, falling into a sleep state for a period that can last 10 to 60 seconds. The person mentally falls asleep no matter what activity he or she is engaged in.
The Chineese use sleep deprivation as a form of torture, it makes you go mad.
In theory, yes
In RL, no
I herd about this one kid who didnt sleep for 48 hours when halo first came out. He died.

Oh god that sounds terrifying.
One time I stayed up for 3 and a half days and then my brain was like 'goodnight' and I passed out in the hallway.
think of sleep as evolutionary baggage
if animals allow themselves to be exposed and unprotected that long, it must be fucking important
you will die if you stay up for a week
I'm pretty sure you'd pass out from exhaustion long before you'd die from it.

That was really interesting, anybody interested in sleep/sleep deprivation should go watch this.
