Was it better than the one with Qui-gon-jin in it?
Tickets booked for Saturday. Hell yeah!
Was it better than the one with Qui-gon-jin in it?
Hard to say since that one isn't a musical. But with Geoffrey Rush and Liam Neeson in it, must be a worth a watch
I liked it. Never saw/read any other version before it and I genuinely enjoyed it. I've watched musicals before this, and this is actually a pretty solid one.
my favorite part of the movie. sacha baron cohen did a good job imo.
Eh, I don't think he did that great, at least in that song. I haven't seen the film, only clips, but it seems like Cohen did a far better job in Sweeney Todd than in this
So I just got back from the theater. To start off, I've known the music of this show since I was like 7 (have the 10th anniversary on vhs, still plays like a boss), I saw the show when it was brought back to Broadway in 06, and saw the 25th anniversary as well. Here's how I would order versions from best to least best: 10th anniv (let's be honest, this is the dream cast for a reason) 06 revival 2012 film 25th anniv Really, the only problem I had with the 25th was the fact that they casted Nick Jonas, who can't sing for shit in the role of Marius, everyone else was fantastic, the producer (Cameron Mackintosh) really knows how to handpick roles, save Nick Jonas. And now, onto the film. It didn't even feel like 2.5 hrs had passed by, seeing as how the show itself is an operetta, moving from one song to the next, even with most of the basic dialogue sung. Russell Crowe's Javert was not bad, it started out meh, but got better as the film went along. The arrangements were done well, and even that new song (written by Schonberg himself) wasn't bad. Everyone else was great, and while I'm not used to Jackman singing, I think he started to prove himself in the role when "Who Am I?" came up. Also, Anne Hathaway as Fantine was fucking fantastic, I mean shit, I had shivers going up and down my spine the whole time she sung "I Dreamed A Dream." That normally doesn't happen. Overall, I give it a 9/10.
Watched it earlier today. Enjoyed it for the most part. Editing felt sloppy and choppy with little room to breath. An annoying overuse of close ups, probably due to the budget. Could clearly tell what was shot indoor, such as the cafe street. Pretty compressed in other words. Anne Hathaway was great, as well as most of the main cast. Jackman clearly struggled during some of the songs, but it didn't bother me too much. The minor roles really impressed me though, such as the students, the factory ladies and the foreman, Gavroche etc. 7.5/10
Hugh Jackman's horrible singing ruined it for me. Redmayne wasn't to great either.
I'm just gonna throw my opinion out there and say I loved it despite its flaws. Jackman had the heart of the role in the right place, for the most part that is, but he lacked the true tenor voice that you need for the show's Les Mis. Still, he pulled it off with the baritone-type voice he has, something that is hard as shit to do. Not perfect, but good. Russel Crowe was, in my opinion, the weakest link of the show. He put on a good acting show, but he was just terrible at singing. I was a part of a youth conservatory production of Les Mis as Javert and I was kinda sad whenever I heard him. Oh well. Anyway, I loved it. So yeah.
Just saw it too and I loved everything about it. It was awkward hearing Russel Crowe sing, but I don't think he was bad.
I thought the movie was okay. I really didn't like how they zoomed so much on the character's faces during some of the songs. Made it feel a bit claustrophobic. That said, that was a really incredible rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream". I've been listening to all the other versions I can find, but Anne Hathaway's felt the most human. It didn't just feel like a person singing a song, it felt more like someone lamenting over their life going to shit-you really feel a sense of pain in her voice.
The film was great but I felt Hugh sung way too much. I also found the end of I dreamed a dream funny as one guy started clapping while no-one else did.
Everyone sang too much. There was too much singing
I loved this movie. Even though some of the actors didn't have a perfect voice, I loved their acting. Man I got so emotional during the ending when "Do you hear the people sing" slowly crept upon you.
HOLY FUCK D: First time I've ever been to the movie where everyone shut the fuck up. No popcorn rustling etc. And when Gavroche died I think we all cried. Loved it, Javert was a little 50/50 Stars: 4.9/5
just saw the new one should I wacth the one with Liam Neeson
yes for a great drama that doesn't follow much of the book (it ends after javert's suicide), but if you're looking for singing, then no.
the book is almost 200 years old the musical is 27 no spoilers can be had.
As a die-hard Les Mis fan the first time I saw the movie I was disappointed. Jackman's singing is quite weak compared to stage Valjeans and I didn't like a lot of the changes. However, after seeing it a second time I actually like it a lot more, my expectations going in the first time were too high, I now enjoy it for what it is - an adaptation, and not a straight translation from the stage. Both times I saw it I cried as Valjean died, and I've never cried at Les Mis before. That says something about the film I suppose. It has heart.

I can't be the only one that once it was announced hoped it would just be a movie of the book without being based on the musical... I'm not a big fan of musicals and had to watch it with a lady friend and I thought it was okay for a musical.
