Prayer is entirely psychological, like a lot of tribal medicine. Without a belief in a deity the same works as long as you believe it, you can reassure yourself or be determined by telling yourself it, rather than declaring it to whatever it is you believe it. Same effect, same thing really.
Whatever works for you I suppose, do what you do. I only have an issue when religion gets militant or objects to scientific advancement for petty reasons.
I'm not sure what you're rambling about. I'm really curious about this. I'm sorry if I you don't hold the same curiosity as me.

Well a crutch is something that helps you along a tough point of having your leg broken.
good point
either way, i don't see why people so avidly attack religion and prayer; sure you do need to put in some work (church, going through the bible every now and then), but the fulfillment religion provides goes far beyond someone's banter on a forum
That's not directly because of christianity though.
It's because of all the attention the debates between "darwinism" and creationism get. Society has impressed this dichotomy into people's minds that has no basis in fact. The result is 52% not believing in evolution.
Its because a religion doesnt like any information that disproves there religion so they tell there people its false and they believe them
From what I've seen in this thread, Christians do have a reason to dislike religion bashing. Religion is something they tell themselves is true so they can get through hard times, and by challenging religion, you're destroying their placebo. Leave em alone guys. :frown:
Hmm. For all the Christians on this thread, I have a small question. Why do you believe in your religion? Please not the "I have faith" answer. Faith is defined as "a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny". Saying you believe because of faith is just saying "I believe because I strongly believe." I am actually deeply curious as to why you hold these strange beliefs.
A lot of them can't give good answers because they don't really know why. Most Christians nowadays were raised that way, and don't really have any reasons to question their faiths.
Every time a thread like this is started, some type of deity kills a kitten.

a very bad one at that
Its because a religion doesnt like any information that disproves there religion so they tell there people its false and they believe them
but evolution doesn't "disprove" christianity.
And who's they? I mean, the closest thing christianity really has to a heirarchy is the papal system, and even the pope accepts evolution.

Christianity is as natural to me as atheism is to you.
I'm fine with atheism. It's anti-theism I can't stand.
If I, personally, want to believe that a guy with a beard is up there looking out for me, then that doesn't affect you in any way, shape, or form.
I'm all for fighting back against bigots like WBC and all those idiots, but when you start insulting someone for their PERSONAL beliefs and they haven't even said a word to you about it, that's just rude. Let them be.
Now, if they start flinging dumbass statements in your face that they can't back up, then feel free to bash them all you want. That's the main reason I don't do religious debate. Because I don't know everything about my religion myself and I don't plan on trying to justify it to anyone but me.
people like you, man.
why cant we all just respect the fact that certain people will have faith? if that works for them, then whats the big deal?
lol gays can't marry
lol let's invade iraq
lol let's not teach evolution in schools

It disproves the god created every animal things and you have to admit that religion is the only reason why people have problems with it, also the gay thing as well.
the heirarchy is the meme its self
Here we go again
Christianity is as natural to me as atheism is to you.
Well seeing as everyone is born without knowledge of deistic concepts, I highly doubt that Christianity is as natural as my Atheism.
I believe most religions are about believing and having faith.
It is mostly created to evolve yourself as a person and expand your mind. Most religions promise an eternal reward if you do this. Personally I don't buy the last part but if everyone would be as good as te bible wants you to be then the world would be a much better place wouldn't it?
I don't believe in most "supernatural" things made up by religion but the influence that religion have had on history and will have is unquestionable. We are shaped by religion and that is why i generally think that openly religious people are better persons than the average joe.

what if "higher beings", such as gods, are natural to a human mind?
Wouldn't that turn the table?

Reality says otherwise.

Well it's pretty close when you consider those who were raised in a church setting. My father is a pastor, so my religion is a pretty good part of my life. I've gone to the same church since before I was even born every Sunday and Wednesday. It's not something to easily get out of when it's really all you've ever known. Not that I have any desire to get out of it, since it's done good things for me in my life.

I think he means ultranationalism, dying for your country by doing terrorist acts

People have interpreted the beginning of Genesis metaphorically since it was written.
Evolution disproves nothing.
It's true that without religion, there would be little reason for people to have problems with it, but the fact of the matter is that the two beliefs are perfectly compatible, and by trying to force the lie that they aren't all you will accomplish is forcing more people to reject evolution.
If you'd said that it's because people go to church and think it means they don't have to think for themselves, that would've been a legitimate argument (albeit a flawed one). What you basically just said is that there is no heirarchy, there is no one trying to force our beliefs to match theirs (that is, within the christian community) and that everything you've said till now is BS. You're trying to personify christianity, an idea, as this "they" that's out to get us all. Christianity, as an idea, is more flexible than you think.
call me retarded, but what if paleontologists have been misinterpreting the age and structure of pre-hominid bones for all these years? take lucy for an example

the actual fossils they found are very human like but somehow, they drew the conclusion that her entire skeleton would look like this:

this is just jumping to conclusions, they made an ape like face, temple and set of cheekbones from nothing more than a jaw, rear of a skull and a fragment of an eyebrow bone
Sweden is about to tear apart religion like its chew toy.

You atheists don't need to be so arguemental. If you read Christians' posts carefully you will understand their reasons for belief.
Can I bash religious dogma?
Why are you bolding statements?
I know what I said.
is there a problem with Nationalism? Don't you love your country?
Hes saying you should not love your country for no reason
guys what if god created the big bang
Isn't there some philosophy or idea thinking that everything we've ever known is all a lie.

Already been said. Many many many times.

not impossible, but if he told moses (i think it was moses he talked to about the world creation) then he missed with quite a few years

Paleontologists most likely know what they're doing. Also, please don't tell me you're a creationist. That, my friend, would be a justified cause for ridicule.
