Someone attempted to mug me, and failed miserably.
I would only use it if jumped by a group or attacked with a knife or other weapon. All I have to say in court is I felt my life was in danger and I had to defend myself. Do you think they would really give a shit if some gangster who tried to rob someone got killed or severely beaten?
If anything I should get a medal for it. Not like I go out looking for trouble but if it comes to me I want to be ready.
Yeah, they will care. In the eyes of the law, our lives all have equal value, that's how a "free" country operates. No one's going to give you a medal for it, they're just going to look at you and comment on how completely insane it is that you carry around a hammer to "defend" yourself with. It looks to me like you're not really so much interested in defending yourself so much as having an excuse to beat someone half to death with a hammer.
And a hammer isn't as threatening.
A knife is great for surprise or a last resort but as a primary melee weapon it cant stand vs a hammer (until the knife starts getting larger but in this case lets say its a normal folding pocket knife. Knifes are only good if a person is properly trained to use one. With a hammer I can swing all day and whatever point I hit you with it will do damage depending on how hard I hit. With a knife your going to need to strike very precisely and with the blade side or get a good stab in. Your going to have to be very close to get stabbed deep enough to cause any real damage vs 1 good head blow with a hammer.

Its not illegal for me to have perfectly legal household tools on my person is it? People here in Seattle get away with shooting muggers all the time since its an open carry state and they will give just about anyone without a major felony a closed carry permit. I'm not too worried but if I was put in the shoes of having to kill someone I would be more concerned that I'm still alive then about the law.
But here's the thing: Your life and health are more valuable than whatever the hell is in your wallet. The life of the guy robbing you is worth more than what's in your wallet. No one needs to die over something like that. Carrying a weapon just ensures that you or someone else ends up hurt or dead, and everyone who cares about them has to deal with it. It's just not worth it. My advice to anyone in this situation - take the quickest and safest way out, and let the cops do their job. It's what they're trained to do.
What if, get this, the cops aren't right with you in an altercation?
Obeying the law isn't the point. The point is, why kill someone over 33 cents? It's not worth it.
I'm not saying don't defend yourself. Just don't let it get to the point where it is an altercation if you can avoid it. It isn't bloody worth it. It's better they walk off and get arrested than someone getting hurt.
why didn't you bang the cop chick
ITT: ball hammer vs. knife discussed by facepunches experienced melee combat experts.
If you are not a pro street fightr!!11 you would probably wussy out when you get stabbed even once making you unlikely to even continue fighting.

With a hammer I can swing wildly without any real skill and do damage. Also even if you did get stabbed your adrenaline would keep you going. I don't know about the rest of you but after the first few punches of a fist fight the actual pain becomes numb and you just focus on trying to hurt the other person.
So you didn't get caught for skipping school?
lol canada
Something a bit similar happened to me.
One night I went to Walmart with someone. I got all my stuff and couldn't find the person I came with, so I thought they had finished shopping and were out at the car. I went outside to find the car doors were locked and that they weren't done. I decided to wait outside for her to come out because it was a nice night and I didn't feel like lugging my groceries around. I stupidly decide to count how much money I had. Some people driving by notice and start cracking up. They parked and two guys approach me while I'm sitting on the bench.
One guy was the talker and the other guy just kind of laughed and repeated what the other guy said. They were probably in their mid 20's and didn't look really strong, but they surely could beat the crap out of me. Most of all, they were both pretty creepy. They asked me a few random questions like where I lived, who I was, and crap like that. I didn't really give good responses. The guy then goes on some tangent about smoking blunts and how when people don't give them money for blunt wraps that people get shot. He was using the N word like every 5 seconds (they were both white, not that it matters). I was a decent bit on edge but couldn't imagine what they could do with me sitting close to the entrance and with a few other people hanging around outside.
I told them to "go away" and to "leave me alone" a few times. They make their threats more blatant and say that I better give them 5 dollars. They kept on persisting that I give them some money for their blunts and went on with random stories. At this point there were more annoying than threatening, I pretty much knew there was no way they'd literally do harm to me, they were just trying to scare me into giving them the money. Then I decide to get up and just walk into the store and make it look like I was heading for the service desk so they wouldn't follow me.
They left me alone and I tried finding the person I came with. I saw those two guys again so I walked in the other direction. They really annoyed me because what would likely happen if I was approached again would be the same routine of threats, although they may have jumped me, but I didn't find that likely. Eventually I found the person I came with and we left. Later that night I was a bit shaken up because that fear of getting mugged finally hit.
I didn't report them at all, but probably should have. I think my rational at the time was "what proof do I have to prove they were threatening me".
One time a guy tried to brake into one of my old martial arts instructor's mother's house, and he was visiting at the time. The guy was all like "gimme yo money" but the instructor, who is pretty small , like 5'7" and lean, but he grabbed his arm and literally smashed his arm, like by twisting it and crap, and the guy was begging to be arrested.
Sounds like...
someone tried to mug you but failed because he was high.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees.
Sounds like that mugger really had his hopes high
At first, I read "Someone attempted to hug me and failed miserably"
I was dissappointed.
this thread looks like a good place for a gun debate

Please, desist from starting one.
Smartness.
What are you going to tell your parents?
"Mom, today I got mugged."
"WHAT? When?"
"When I was not ditching class."
Thing with a hammer though depending on the model they are difficult to carry/heavy and make some odd conversation when somebody sees you with one. For a knife though you can have a variety of uses for it, you can hammer with the tang, cut with the blade and serrations, any probably some other things. They are lightweight and easy to get out and dont need much power to get a good cut and are easy to stop, while the hammer carries the momentum creating a greater blow but also making it hard to counter a hit from them when you are getting ready to swing again. It's either break there arm or sevirely damage it. Either one will get the job done but the knife is alot more useful in daily life.
I nearly read it as hug me.
I'm trying to picture him taking your phone and running.
I can't help but picturing him running into the street, and getting hit by a bus.
Some prick tried to mug me with a phillips screwdriver.
Didnt end well for him.

That guy failed to level up on his thieving skills.
Ive let random people use my phone all the time. Never had a problem with any of them. The only real time someone tried to rob me is after work at around 11pm I was waiting at the bus station and some guy came up to me and asked if I had 75 cents for the bus, I told him I didn't then he asked how I was getting on the bus and I told him I had a transfer. He then boldly asked me to give him my transfer and I had decided this had gone far enough and told him to fuck off. He tried the above and flashed a knife. So I pulled out a ballpoint hammer I pack in my jacket and told him very calmly "lets go" He then tried to pull the "oh I was just messing with you" game
TL;DR If someone tries to mug you stand up to them and typically they will leave you alone since they would rather go after someone whose just going to give up their stuff without trouble.
Why the hell would anyone get caught ? If you get caught skipping out it means you suck at it

Pfff, I greet the cops as I leave the school before I am supposed to. They don't give a shit.
Was the cop hot?
I am very glad that you found a genuinely nice and talkative police officer who even drove you to a few places. But on average, please do not chat with those guys too much, for the most part it is recommended that you restrict yourself to a few pre-defined phrases and actions. It is just that according to shared knowledge, police officers are not even remotely who they were a few decades ago, they ultimately belong to an exceptionally questionable and shady system that is always a good idea to stay away as far as possible from.
I've also been a "victim" of an attempted mugging. Twice. Both on my way to school.
The first time happened at 8:30, which is when classes start, but I was a bit late, so the street was empty, everyone was in class. So I'm walking to the school's gate, when suddenly some guy who wasn't older than 18 asks me if I have time. All he wants for me to do is pull out a cellphone, so he can see how good it is, or just outright take it. I had looked at my wristwatch just earlier, so I just said "Yeah, it's about 8:30". He then gave me the Mugger's sidehug, like we were best buddies and such, just walking down the street. This made me a little nervous, but I kept my cool. Then he had the most sudden change of mind I have ever seen:
"I won't hurt you. Do you have money? I might knife you". He said this almost serenely, it was just a fact that he would knife me. I paid no attention to his addendum and just said I had no money. Then he asked me to show him my phone. My phone was (and is) pretty shite, so I showed it to him, and he said, with a frustrated look:
"What the fuck is that? I'm going away". And he just walked away like nothing had ever happened.
A few weeks later, I was approached on the same place, but this time by a group of about 10 people, this was in the afternoon, about 14:30. I realised there was a large group coming in my direction, but I tried to play it cool, and sure enough, when I got a bit closer, they're all like "Show me your phone" "Give me your money", like muggers are wont to do. Again, I had the same phone, so I just showed it to them. One of them said "Oh, just give it back to him, let's go away".
Then finally the last one of them took my schoolbag, and opened the outside pouch, where I had a letter I had to deliver. Now, since he was mugging me, it's easy to say intelligence wasn't his strong suit, so he somehow mistook it for a police fine. Then, ironically, he said this: "What is this? A fine? You criminal!" And ran away to his friends.
And that is how I wasn't mugged twice.
