• Confusion of a once-thought Atheist.
I'm sorry, but it just comes with the territory. If you're prepared to consider yourself atheist or antitheist, you must also be prepared to accuse the opposition of being idiots because they support the belief in the illogical and the irrational, and wholeheartedly believe in fairytales and sometimes encourage others to do so.
That's stupid. Just leave people to believe whatever the fuck they want if it doesn't infringe upon anyone else. If I was locked in a room with an outspoken atheist and a christian who kept to their devices (hint: pretty much all of them do), you can be sure I'd want to kill the atheist first.

Of course, in a normal context, when the issue isn't brought up, there's no reason to push your beliefs on anyone. There may be room for a little discussion of the topic, but the unprovoked aggressive pushing of ideals is never a good thing. However, in this context, we are discussing it, and that means that we're all entitled to state our opinions on the topic, and during a discussion of this nature, being outspoken helps tremendously. You can't just cave when you "know" the other guy is wrong. I would agree with you if this thread wasn't about this topic and was derailed due to a few outspoken faggots who just had to let everyone know what they think, but that simply isn't the case.

There's being outspoken and being a twat. Facepunch is the latter.
Atheism is the rejection and non-belief of a deity. So no, you're still an atheist.
No, atheism is someone who is not a theist, IE without religious beliefs.
As far as I know, Buddhism is referred as an "atheistic religion" in schoolbooks. Here are some good arguments for and against that statement: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_in_Buddhism Also, why the hell are people rating me dumb for explaining my agnosticism :D
ITT: People don't know what theism and atheism means.

Apparently.
Because if you don't reject the possible existence of anything but textbook science with a fiery venom you're a moron.
ITT: People don't know what theism and atheism means.
Most people know exactly what it means, semantically. However every word has semantic and also pragmatic qualities; all of which are quite legitimate for each person. [editline]07:30PM[/editline]
make up our own minds
well uhhh yeah basically.
I can go out and repeatedly get evidence of paranormal/supernatural things. If it can be observed, and I can collect evidence of it... Then how am I supposed to deny that it exists/happens? Isn't that really part of the basics of defining existence?
Please show us some evidence of paranormal or supernatural things.

Then how am I supposed to deny that it exists/happens? Isn't that really part of the basics of defining existence?
What you think is 'evidence' always turns out to be the misinterpretation of normal natural phenomena, or anecdotal evidence like something you've heard from someone who says he knows a guy who knows a guy who has a son who has a friend who is sorta sure that he might have seen a ghost at one point but may be wrong.
Please show us some evidence of paranormal or supernatural things.
Why? So we can start a 30 page thread on how you disagree that it's evidence? [editline]02:40PM[/editline]
What you think is 'evidence' always turns out to be the misinterpretation of normal natural phenomena, or anecdotal evidence from someone who says he knows a guy who knows a guy who has a son who has a friend who is sorta sure that he might have seen a ghost at one point but may be wrong.
I could say the same about evolution and get rated dumb thousands of times too.

[editline]02:40PM[/editline] I could say the same about evolution and get rated dumb thousands of times too.
That's because that would be an extremely stupid thing to say. There have never been any real evidence for paranormal things. There is massive amounts for evolution.
How is it possible to believe in ghost and not god? I mean, Ghost are souls, Souls are religious thingies that were used by ancient people to explain how you have emotion and blah blah blah. I think so anyway, not sure. But the brain does this so I actually have no soul.

Then how am I supposed to deny that it exists/happens? Isn't that really part of the basics of defining existence?
Except there is no empirical evidence of anything supernatural, simply collecting videos of ghosts is about as useful as collecting copies of LOTR for evidence of dragons, and anecdotal evidence is great, until you find no evidence of the claimed events at the places where something was supposed to have happened. Sure, there are events we haven't been able to fully explain yet, most of them likely due to limited data, but the distinction between this and the paranormal/supernatural is huge. If ghosts and the like really existed then it would be so easy to find empirical evidence of them, and it would also be so easy to devise and perform tests to validate them, and this is even before you lake the giant leap from a freaky unexplained phenomenon to supernatural.
That's because that would be an extremely stupid thing to say. There have never been any real evidence for paranormal things. There is massive amounts for evolution.
That depends on your definition of evidence. What have you seen to believe in it? Have you seen ape change to man? Or even compared the biological structure of two so-called related species? The only thing close to evidence you've probably experienced is observations of animals and textbooks. I'm not attempting to disprove or even say that I disagree with evolution.. because I don't. Just something to think about.
I don't think "science" is 100% certain about that death is the end.
Science is the answer to everything. :science: I would honestly say that you're confused. Or rather, hypocritical. Or perhaps both. I, for one, think that saying you believe in the paranormal but not in God is perfectly normal. I look at the two as completely different things. But if you don't believe in an afterlife, which is typically paired with believing in God and at the same time believe in the paranormal, then you're being a hypocrite. [editline]03:26PM[/editline] In retrospect a lot of that sounds like it doesn't make any sense.

Secondly, saying apes changed into men is like saying a car change to a taxi. It's still a car. Yes, all I have seen is what other people have observed, but if I went out and looked for myself, I would see the exact same. There have never been any scientific evidence for any paranormal or supernatural things.
I've not seen an ape change into a man, no one have, and no one claims that ever happened.
wait what I think something has been lost in translation or something here. [editline]09:37PM[/editline] Anyway, spooks is wrong. In history an absolute fucking shittonne of paranormal things have been proved to be true. It's just that once it's been proved it enters the realm of science and not the supernatural. Gunpowder used to be thought of as magic. Who's to say we're not similarly ignorant to the truth as people who thought that and lots of things?
Jesus H. Christ I think I am going insane.
okay [editline]10:03PM[/editline] oh I forgot to ask Why?
I know all the evidence of ghosts is purely anecdotal, but there sure is a lot of it. To me, it doesn't seem rational to discount it all as fake without really being there just because the the stigmata attached to such things I'm not saying there's dead people walking around, but I think people should scrutinize bizarre or supernatural concepts just as if they were something mundane.
That's what you get for following a crowd, you're not an atheist.
That's what you get for following a crowd, you're not an atheist.
Haha! Please say this is a joke.
Skeptical Inquiry. :eng101: Also, your thoughts on the paranormal are not always linked to your thought on the existence of God.
I'm an autist. :downsbravo:
