God those drum mags are fucking stupid. Especially the "skeletonized" ones. Why the fuck would you make a drum mag (which is prone to jamming in the first place) full of holes for dirt and shit to get inside?
Also they only hold 50 rounds, how the fuck is that thing any better (literally in any way) than just carrying an extra 20 rounder in your pocket?
Firstly they're not for combat, they're for plinking around, in which I'm sure they're a perfectly serviceable piece of equipment. Had I any money, I would bet a significant portion that these mags are not marketed to LE/MIL or even for home/self defense. They're just a range toy, the same as a skeletonized AR receiver is.
Second, were they intended for combat, the entire point of having a high capacity magazine is to be able to fire continuously for longer periods of reloading. As long as storage and weapon function do not become an issue, there is no downside to having an extra 20 rounds available without a reload. I'm surprised you of all people would assert that somehow having 2 separate mags of equivalent capacity is better than one magazine pending both function properly. The idea of a drum mag vs an extended length magazine is that it offers 30+ capacity but does not become a vertical obstruction, such as when prone or for general weapon function.
Now, I just don't like drum mags because they're ugly, but I'm not going to deny their merits just because I don't like them (pending they feed more reliably than Beta CMags)
My thought on the matter is just that with minimal practice, you can swap mags in a negligible amount of time during a firefight. In my eyes, I just don't think saving that ~2 seconds is worth the extra weight on the gun and the bulk of drum mags. I just personally don't see much benefit to having magazines that hold more than 30 rounds.
You'd have to be in a hell of a firefight, and in it without anyone else, to need to fire 50 rounds without taking a couple seconds to reload, and on top of that, by the time you've fired your 20 extra rounds, if you're reloading with another drum mag, it's going to take a bit longer than normal to reload, so that sort of nullifies the "spend less time reloading" point anyway. Not to mention that in a combat situation, I'd bet that those mags don't function nearly as well as a regular mag does.
All that being said, I didn't much consider them as a range toy. I'm not really into the whole "range toy" concept, I've only ever bought firearms and accessories based on their utility in combat so I didn't really consider the possibility.

Even for being Well, I gotta say it's better than having a springer AK-12 that was at SHOT
I wonder if a V3 [del]would[/del] could be forced to fit in it.
Rig up an SMP

someone already said it but if you wanted to see it, it's an AK-12 LPEG made by WELL. Polymer gearbox and the stock doesn't retract, and the selector doesn't work. It's about 50 USD if you're wondering.
Here's a screencap of the image in case you'd like to see it.

I actually really like the look of a swordfish compensator..... :I
I personally kinda like the swordfish kit. Then again I love my futuristic looking guns, even if they have meat pulverisers on the end.
Seems like it would make the gun front-heavy as fuck though.

Meh this Is airsoft

You still experience weight and fatigue in airsoft. It's not like because the guns don't shoot real bullets they become weightless. Running around all day with a heavy ass gun still sucks, even in airsoft, and especially when you gain absolutely nothing from all the extra weight.
Not to mention balance. A front-heavy gun feels awkward, strains the wrists, and is difficult to aim properly, airsoft or not.

Good point.

If a mostly-plastic toy MP5 with a bit of weight on the front, weighing far less than the real thing and being used for just a few hours at a time, is too awkward and heavy to be practical, it's probably time to start doing push-ups.

At no point did I say "too heavy to be practical". Stop putting words in my mouth.
My point was that it's a big ass hunk of metal on the far end of a lightweight plastic gun. That makes for pretty piss-poor balance and general awkwardness when handling the gun whether you're a neckbeard or hulk hogan. Strength has nothing to do with the way a weapon is balanced, but balance certainly affects how effectively any person can use the weapon.
I was saying that his statement "meh it's airsoft" wasn't really applicable, since certain guns (not necessarily this specific one, mind you) can still be shitty to carry all day long, airsoft or not.

eg, the LM4 with its mags that weigh as much as a real steel fully loaded stanag

Especially because most airsofters are children and/or woefully out of shape.

Exactly, the LM4 is certainly airsoft, but carrying 8 mags for it all day is going to wear on anyone because they're secretly made of lead.
