Excellent way to sum that up there, I'll get some more help from that
I mean I'm a sucker for slap bass, and I was like "Hell it's playable on guitar" so I gave it a go.
I just love how explosive it sounds, I'm going to try to write a heavy song with a fistful of distortion using my new technique when I've mastered it.
I'm not a big fan of slap and popping. I can do it, I just never bothered with it really.
I slap on my 7-string
I'm gonna be the next Tosin Abasi
Pfft, you'll never be as awesome as him
I mean, look at the motherfucker

Anyone got any recommendations for a decent foot pedal that wont dry out my wallet? I've been only playing for a year and a half, so I don't need anything beyond amazing, just something that will get the job done.

What kind of foot pedal do you want?

Something that can get a RATM type sound, and a heavier metal type sound as well. I've honestly never used a pedal in my life, so I have no clue what I should be looking for. Been practicing with a clean tone for god knows how long.
Here's the problem:

Tom Morello uses no distortion pedals, just a JCM 800 (no cheap pedals sound much like one) and an effects loop, which would probably annihilate your wallet. And most of the elements of it are kinda essential to his tone IIRC, the Wah is what adds that funk flavor, the flanger and the delay what leads to the spacey elements like the intro to "Testify", and the whammy he abuses on some solos.
If you can swing $150, you could get a Digitech RP255. That has one of each of those effects and an amp model of what he uses, among other stuff. Plus if I'm reading the manual correctly, you can set up most of those effects in a chain pretty similar to his (only bit off would be the delay before/after the flanger.)
If you just needed the distortion, there's the MI Audio crunch box, but that costs almost as much as the RP255.

Was playing around with it today, which gave me the idea of buying one. Thanks!
Yeah Morello is well known for his effects whoring
It's what makes his playing so special though

What makes his playing so special is that he can make all of those crazy ass sounds with NORMAL GUITAR EFFECTS. No custom shop mods, no super special hand-wound pickups, nothing. Anybody with access to the same equipment and knowledge of settings can get that tone.
You just create a piano hammer with your thumb to slap and pull a string (Usually with the index finger) to pop.
The action between the two is all in the wrist.
A lot of the work is in the fretting hand too though, that tight slap bass sound comes from the percussive sounding muted notes. I do a combination of muting with both hands but I wouldn't be able to explain how, it just evolved. I Pop with my middle finger rather than the usual index finger.
You make it sound so easy.
Then I try doing it and my entire right arm says "the number you have dialed is not in service. Go fuck yourself and call back when you're not a giant asshole."

Man, if I knew how I'd actually bother using my bass more often than never. It just sounds so cool.

My 4 string is fucked to hell and its hard doing slap on a 5 string because of the extra string.
chorus effect pedal is best effect pedal

Exactly, all he uses is a wah, a whammy and a killswitch really
I love his distortion tones, I'm going to recreate them when I get some cash
damn, the music store near our house has no more black pickguards :smith:
i think i will just make a one out of wood :unsmith: gonna post pics. later
Slapping is pretty easy actually it was one of the first things I learned to do properly.
And sweeping is learnable, I am progressing quite smoothly with it.
I only hate barre chords but that is also learnable if I put some effort in it.
And I am having quite some trouble with bass tapping because my fingers are not strong enough yet.
Would this be the appropriate place for bass discussion?
Would this be the appropriate place for bass discussion?
Absolutely, it just doesn't come up as often as it used to.
some guy mad a bass thread and i dont like using that thread as it kinda distant the guitarists and bassist where we should be together but ye man i was playing my schecter tonight and i absolutely love it
[editline]30th January 2011[/editline]

Oh god, the first year I started learning guitar.
"Hey this song sounds cool, I'm going to try and find a tab"
"Ah, alls going well"
*Barre chord*
"Fuck this shit I'm leaving."
Then I remembered that practice makes perfect and now I am the master of barre chords.
i cant play some shit like to live is to die i can play that but i cant barre it so i just do the first 4 strings or something and it sounds exactly same
Imagine barre chords when on a 7-string bass :ohdear:
yeah, basses are called bass guitars
and most guitarists place bass and vice-versa
i love this thread because everyone is so friendly and no one tries to be top shit and claim they are the best and stuff
Band practice tonight, if only I could play and sing at the same time.
Singing in this band is fun but playing bass in this bass is not fun because now one wants to play Progressive Metal with me :frown:
And on a side note, I found a motherfucking awesome music school I will probably go to next year if I complete this year.
