You need to work on your timing mister
I need some tips for recording guys, I know I've seen tips posted before, but I don't feeling like looking through 89 pages of Geetar disushion. So here are some questions I have: 1. How much of a difference do microphones make? I have a ~$40 Sony microphone with the pop filter thingy taken off. 2. How should I position it? I've tried dead centre of the 2x12 at 3-6inches away, I've tried 3-10 inches away angled left or right (these gave me some of the better tones). 3. What volume? I would imagine it being tube, higher would be better. 4. Should I be setting my recorder interface to Mic or Line(this has to do with volume as well)? It can go in between the two mind you, like a knob. 5. It seems to be picking up a lot of bass and highs no matter the position, could this be the mic, or my tone?
God, I'm kind of pissed that I want to record stuff and yet I have no good way of recording nor the money to buy stuff to record. :saddowns:

A radio shack piece of crap mic sounds absolutely terrible. I can't believe I recorded vocals with it. Once you start getting into the upper range, the difference gets smaller and smaller, but the difference between cheap and mid grade mics is very substantial. 2. You position it where it sounds best. There are general positions people may start with, but there is no absolutes, especially considering the impact the room might have. 3. Go really high. Make sure there isn't any clipping on the recording (there shouldn't be if you set it up right). You don't really want it hitting the 0db mark, but you don't want it at a low level either. You want to get a louder recording because it will lower the noise to sound ratio. 4. See number 2. You don't want too much gain otherwise you'll get distortion. 5. Good chance it is your room. I'm guessing the room is in a square shape, probably a lot of phase cancellation going on. It could also be an issue with your mic as well. A workaround could be to lower the bass on your amp until it sounds good on your recording. Personally I don't mic my guitar. I use Guitar Rig. My room sucks and my amp sucks. The best way for me to get a good recording is to plug directly into my interface.

[editline]4th February 2011[/editline] Oh wow, I just realized my recording interface has tons of effects, including amp rip-offs etc. Now I feel bad not using my amp for recording, but I can't record with it anyways until I get a new mic.
woooh just got my guitar in the mail 2009 Epihone Les Paul standard shitty camera, the guitar looks brand new :D my first impression is that since i've played bass for two years, a guitar is fucking tiny! my fingers seem massive :v:
haha that's how i am after i put my bass down and go fuck about on the guitar, i'm just like um wtf i can't play this nice guitar though m8 :downs:
I finally have had the time to get my electric gear back from my drummer's house. Now I can finally my electric bass instead of my acoustic bass and mess with effects.
new mic and stand are on their way via ups but somebody must have sniped the last 3 sets of the strings I wanted from musician's friend between the time it took me to go from "add to cart" to "check out" I need those new strings to record with you fucks

In fact, it was this:
you should buy one for me [editline]5th February 2011[/editline] then mail it to me my address is 22 Acacia Ave, Oxford, Oxfordshire OX4, UK
It's always annoying when this happens.
soak hands in water peel off skin continue playing
never happens to me i never have to press the strings that hard to rip the skin
That happened to me in my first few weeks of playing
I only have that if I don't play for a week or so.
I get it all the time and I play my guitar all day, everyday.
soak hands in water peel off skin continue playing
I've experienced that not working out well at all. It's good to get some moisture back in the skin, but my fingers just really need a break. I've been probably playing guitar and bass for 5-7 hours. Not continuous of course, but enough to really wear out my hand. It's what happens when I get obsessed with getting perfect recordings. It's common sense, but never play your guitar with pruned fingers. I found this out the hard way a while ago.
Mine just rips off the top layer of skin, then it gets shiny and hurts. 13's all day erryday guitar all day erryday my lifestyle
I have no problem with it on my bass and I play 8 hours every day and I also play quite agressively.
