I had an acoustic first and never played it. It was only until I got my electric I begun actually enjoying myself. Not saying I dislike acoustics.
Silly hypothetical question. Can I get list of everyone in this thread who is actually capable of recording themselves playing? At a decent quality (no webcam mics, that sort of thing.)

I am not capable of this Mainly because I cbf/don't want to :v:
Cheap, but not bottomfeeder. Depending on what you want to play, and if you want electric or acoustic, we can start shooting some recommendations your way.
metal and lots of it [editline]14th February 2011[/editline] granted this will be in a couple of months
I've actually considered using a high bass string for the 7th string whenever I do get a seven. Is that a bad thing? :ohdear:
No, I know of people that do it. It doesn't quite sound the same though. Just use a thick E string. I string up my RG7620 with a six string pack of D'Addario 10's and an extra 0.065 E string for the B. It makes the tension bearable for the 25.5" scale, but I still really want a baritone scale guitar for tunings of C and lower.

I can. My SoundCloud has examples of my recordings.
I can. My SoundCloud has examples of my recordings.
Charlatan
People in my street 3 houses away complained about the noise, while my direct neighbours can't even hear me playing guitar. :wtc:
metal and lots of it [editline]14th February 2011[/editline] granted this will be in a couple of months
Alright, now for a price range. At the entry-level, you have the lower end of the Ibanez RG series, or for a more balanced guitar there's Epiphone's normal guitars (do NOT get an Epiphone Special, they are terrible), or the Jackson that's already been recommended. If you've got some more money to throw at a first guitar and you really think you'll like it, being the newfound fanboy that I am I highly recommend a PRS SE. Any of them. The midrange of the Ibanez RG series is another good choice, and you could start looking into LTD's as well. As for an amp, I will always recommend the Peavey Vypyr as a first amp, the only exception being if somebody wants pristine flawless cleans instead of varying levels of distortion and effects. 15w isn't bad but the 30w model has more features, if you can afford it with the guitar.
Silly hypothetical question. Can I get list of everyone in this thread who is actually capable of recording themselves playing? At a decent quality (no webcam mics, that sort of thing.)
Yeah I can record
Silly hypothetical question. Can I get list of everyone in this thread who is actually capable of recording themselves playing? At a decent quality (no webcam mics, that sort of thing.)
Yes and no. My amplifier is crap, but I can always line the guitar into a Zoom R16, but the presets in there are pretty bad when it comes to eventual mixing afterwards. Here's one that I've done a few weeks ago. http://soundcloud.com/degge/desert-plains/s-uZfGm It was only a demo so I didn't care that much about timing.
I have the chance to possibly pick up an epiphone sg for one hundred buckss. Should I go for it?
I've actually considered using a high bass string for the 7th string whenever I do get a seven. Is that a bad thing? :ohdear:
Terrible terrible idea. Bass strings sound entirely different from guitar strings and won't fit through an electric guitar's bridge. If you have a seven you're better off buying individual strings online and piecing packs together, most 7 string sets are a load of shit. You can order up to an .80 from D'Addario and a .90 from Ernie Ball anyway, and Gary Goodman at Octave4Plus can custom make any size you want.

If it's good enough for Meshuggah it's good enough for you.
