Man I still don't even know what gauge strings I use I want heavier ones though, for dropped tunings
Another cover by me. Easy song, but I like the solo.
So what's the first thing to do when you start guitar, aside from learning how to read music, which I've done already. Also for the Dot I chose, it's good to play Beatles covers right? :v:

Power chords, which have no "colour", are very easy and very fun. But learning Major and Minor chords are very much recommended, since they're so fundamental. Also, depending on what you want to play, look up tabs of your favourite songs and try to play. But try not to get too dependant on tabs!! Try to play along with songs without looking up specifics. It's hard in the beginning, but training your musical ear is essential for ever becoming a good guitarist. Learn tremolo picking. Learn to use all four fingers. Play scales up and down. If you want to solo and improvise, there are only really 4 scales which you need to learn. Regular Major, Regular Minor, Pentatonic and Harmonic Minor. The first two are fundamental. Pentatonic Minor is your typical rock scale (add 4+ for that bluesy sound!!). Harmonic Minor is typically used for neo-classical music, it is Yngwie Malmsteen's signature sound. It's a nice variation from the overused Pentatonic scale. PS. Make sure you hold your pick correctly. Remember to have fun! :v:
Remember to have fun! :v:
Thanks man. :3: Oh and I will, as Rock Band and my friends got me into this in the first place and I intend to jam with them in the near future. Christmas better get here soon.

We really need more bassists though. I might switch to bass guitar myself, it's not THAT underrated, but it just seems to pale incomparison to lead guitar renown. But bass is just SO badass
We really need more bassists though. I might switch to bass guitar myself, it's not THAT underrated, but it just seems to pale incomparison to lead guitar renown. But bass is just SO badass
The problem is how quiet bass guitars are in most album mixes, people don't hear the awesome basslines and just disregard the entire instrument. It's a shame really. Lack of rock keyboardists also annoys me.
I think the problem with bass is that it's only fun to play if you have something to play along with. On its own it's pretty boring, whereas guitar can be fun even if you ain't got a whole group to support you. That's how I feel.
''Bass guitar is useless in songs :downs:'' This is what I hear so many times, without bass guitars music would be rather boring.
Though it's pretty funny how the people who praise the bass are usually the same people who insist on tuning their guitars as low as physically possible. :D
Though it's pretty funny how the people who praise the bass are usually the same people who insist on tuning their guitars as low as physically possible. :D
I prefer to keep things standard, that's why I like extended range instruments. Low tunings possible without too much trouble and no loss of the higher notes, if only I could afford them. [editline]18:50PM[/editline] Also I'll upload pictures of my gear tomorrow.
I have a Fender American Deluxe Strat Les Paul Goldtop. ESP LTD H-101FM I also use VOX AX15C1 and a Orange Mini practice amp when I'm at school. I'm also going to buy a Epiphone Studio Dot in Faded Sunburst. I've wanted that for a about 6 months.
Though it's pretty funny how the people who praise the bass are usually the same people who insist on tuning their guitars as low as physically possible. :D
I praise the bass because I'm a bassplayer. That said, I stick to standard tuning on all instruments.
PS. Make sure you hold your pick correctly. [img_thumb]http://www.timscott.co.uk/images/misc/holding_your_pick_correctly.jpg[/img_thumb]
I still don't do it that way. What exactly is the upside or purpose that makes that the correct way?
there is no such thing as a "correct" way to play or pick on guitar play as you please, although be aware that there are more "convenient" ways to play guitar that may better your playing in some ways.
We really need more bassists though. I might switch to bass guitar myself, it's not THAT underrated, but it just seems to pale incomparison to lead guitar renown. But bass is just SO badass
Dude, Funk bass Esp slap That shit, absolutely destroys.
I still don't do it that way. It just gives the best control and comfort. People who say that one should just hold it your own way, are usually the kind who already hold it incorrect, but are too lazy to relearn. :v:
I can't decide what strings to get for my bass... I like the sound of flatwounds, but I don't want to lose that deep bass sound either... Any suggestions?

Sometimes when practicing I'll switch just to see if I get any faster or more reliable with my half-pencil bullshit or that, and the results are continuously "doesn't matter." Then again I build speed extremely slowly and haven't had as much time to sink into Metal Method as I'd like, but I cannot for the life of me figure out why how I hold it matters. Maybe it's just having come from brass where it didn't really matter what the fuck you did as long as the correct button was depressed at the correct time.
Well, looks like I'll never be doing any full Symphony X covers in my lifetime...
Okay, I think I have a plan for a custom guitar. I have a Jackson JS1R, and I actually like the neck, and the pickups are decent, but not a fan of the boring black body. As a first build, my plan is to get an Alder block, which my dad said he can get for really cheap, and still be good quality, and then cut out a Rhandy Rhoads shape. Unfortunately, we don't have a bandsaw, but my dad does have a pretty good quality jigsaw from Bosch. I read that obviously bandsaws are highly recommended and easier/faster, but it can be done with patience and craftsmanship on a jigsaw, and my dad has been doing this type of precise work his whole life. We have all the other tools, routers, rotary sanders or whatever they are called etc. After the body is cut out, we would use the parts I like from the JS1R, the neck mainly, and then get better tuners and new bridge, and maybe new pickups, but I'll see in the future. Then, we will paint it white with some black outlines. We might paint it ourselves, but my dad knows a professional paint guy who does motorcycles and all that stuff. It'll be bolt-on because of the JS1R's neck, which is maple with rosewood. This is gonna be our first build, so it'll still be affordable, but much higher quality than a kit. What do you guys think?
Well you seem to have everything planned out well, so go for it!
Well you seem to have everything planned out well, so go for it!
Yay! You have a JS1 if I remember correctly, right? Actually a really good guitar for the price, for metal especially.

I've gotten in the habit of having decent to good timing, or course with some occasional slip ups, but I'm generally pretty on beat. The next task to handle is counting while playing. I've been counting with my exercises, but I never do it when playing music. I could honestly do without it, but getting into the habit would be good, especially if I was to get into sight reading. Also, I want my rhythm to be spot on and to have a way to check that I am right on time. My way now is usually by the start of new bars and the snare on the third beat, but I want to make sure I'm on time all the way through.

I am very excited to get the wood soon. My dad says he could get a block identical to the alder blocks on stewmac.com for like $20 because of his "connections" :hehe: As for the timing, I never count while playing, I rely on my drummer. Actually, when there are start/stop/silent parts, I do count.

The X2n is VERY treble-heavy, but makes a great lead pickup.
Well here are my guitars. Beware bad Ipod pictures may rape your eyes. I think I may be blind after looking at them. Tip! Zoom all the way out for decent looking pictures!
