you are a fucking idiot
So are you.
I have to agree with Rad, I don't think there is a way of holding your pick that is more convenient or opens up anything new
..but I cannot for the life of me figure out why how I hold it matters

You get full control:

There's no risk of flicking your thumb.

You get a good pick angle.

Your wrist takes less stress.

You can tap and do pinch harmonics on the run.

It's optimal for palm muting.
It is the correct (=best) way simply put. And the sooner one realizes this, the better!
you are a fucking idiot
That's real mature. :3:
Hold the pick the way you want and you find comfortable. Not the way that you "should".
I have to agree with Rad, I don't think there is a way of holding your pick that is more convenient or opens up anything new
There's a difference between thinking one way of doing it is perfect and that there's no technically "better" way of doing it.
-I have no idea what you mean
-The angle is nearly identical regardless of how I hold it
-My picking wrist has never been sore, ever
-Fair enough
-I have an easier time muting with my half pencil grip
This just seems hella subjective. Who's to say certain types of hand aren't better off using other types of grip? For all anyone knows if I bust out the slide rule and calipers me doing this and somebody doing clawfinger and Hetfield picking like an asshole and you doing that would all end up pretty much the same for proportional distance, tension and overall articulation.
I hold my pick like this (although I'm gripping it a bit tighter than normal because I was really attacking my bass with a normal guitar pick here):

And I don't have any trouble doing any of those things.
When I try and hold the pick your 'correct' way, I find it substantially more difficult to control my palm muting.
It's also much more difficult to strum the guitar, this 'correct' way is probably more of a shredder technique. It doesn't easily allow you to be versatile, at least for me. The way I hold my pick is because it doesn't restrict my playing.
Rad. I respect most of your opinions here but grow up. Also, my picking technique varies quite a lot. I flatpick for strumming and fast chords, I tilt forward for alt picking on the high strings, and tilt back for alt picking on he low strings
I'd do an X2n as a lead pickup and a CrunchLab or LiquiFire as a rhythm pickup if I was you. The X2n is VERY treble-heavy, but makes a great lead pickup.
I'm gonna have to disagree. The X2N is basically a one trick pony. It does very specific things very well, but little else. Basically, if you're a massive Death fan, you will love the X2N. But otherwise, check out the D Sonic, Crunch Lab or Tone Zone from DiMarzio, the Screamin' Demon, Alternative 8, Distortion or JB from SD, or the Nailbomb, Painkiller, Miracle Man, Warpig or Rebel Yell from Bare Knuckle for more versatile metal bridge pickups.
GAME OVER

It's not my problem if you want to limit yourselves.
I can't decide what strings to get for my bass...
I like the sound of flatwounds, but I don't want to lose that deep bass sound either... Any suggestions?
You have a deep bass sound when you use flatwounds.
If you want to get a more open punchy tone, use roundwounds. If you can't decide, use half-, ground- or pressurewounds.

I'm not limiting myself because I hold my pick differently, if I hold a pick at all.

This just in: Because more famous people use Ernie Ball strings than anything else, they are irrefutably the best strings ever.
Get over yourself.

My first solo.. halfway through I started to improvise a bit.
Your guitar is crying :(
Your guitar is crying :(
The tone is quite awful I agree :v: but I can't get a good distortion sound on such high notes.
Okay, I think I have a plan for a custom guitar.
What do you guys think?
I did something similar except none of it was custom.
The manager of the local Sam Ash (music store for those not in the know) was talking to me one day when I mentioned I wanted a Rhoads V. He had a body, with all the hardware, sitting under his bed. I picked it up from him. Next, I got a reverse headstock neck from a Dinky and bolted that on. Before I strung it up, I put an Invader in the bridge (cuz I'm in a pop-punk band, and that's what Tom DeLonge had for Enema Of The State). Of course the righty tuners that came with the body didn't work, so I put Gotoh's on it. Pictures soon.

Yeah the CrunchLab/LiquiFire combo from DiMarzio is pretty bitchin' as well. I mean, it's what Petrucci uses on all of his guitars (and he was the reason they made 7-string versions of those pickups).
I just have a thing for added output on lead pickups.
Anyone who can help me to set the intonation on my guitar? :o

It is bad to play bass with a pick...
It is bad to play bass with a pick...
No it isn't. Playing with a pick gives you a totally different sound which may be better for a song.
That's real mature. :3:
I don't give a shit what's mature or not. Anybody who thinks that there is a "better" way to hold a pick or play a guitar is beyond stupid.
If you wanted to know, yes, I do pick that way, but I think people are entitled to their own choice.

He doesn't hold his pick exactly the same way as you guys do, yet he is an AMAZING guitarist.
Which brings me to Wes Montgomery since you guys are talking about only metal guitarsits.

He only uses his thumb to pick.

I'm not an asshole, but when someone says CORRECT way to play an instrument, it's just the lowest of the low and incredibly stupid.

Nobody's saying there is a correct way to pick, but it certainly is the most convenient
The screws on the bridge adjusts the height, not the length. :/
Nobody's saying there is a correct way to pick, but it certainly is the most convenient
The most convenient way is the way you're comfortable with.
This is a matter of preference. Some people may like to hold their pick one way or the other.
