EMGs brah :smug:
Double no. If he's cranking a solid state amp EMG's are a bigger waste of money than they normally are. I really don't understand why so many guitars come stock with EMGs. They're a very specialised pickup. They need to be used in a certain way to get the best out of them, otherwise you're as well just having passives, at least that way you don't have a bloody battery stuck in your guitar Fuck you Knorre you ruined my automerge
Well when I got the guitar I didn't know much, I thought 'HURR it got batteries, dat make 'em heavier :downs:'

But that's me. Also, the coil-tapped EMG-85 I have makes me like 'em more, since I can get as much of a clean tone I was looking for out of them.
They're a perfectly fine sounding pickup, don't get me wrong. But they are not what everyone needs, by a long long way. They are pretty much designed to work with tube amps, which a lot of the (pardon the term) metal noobies who are into EMGs as the be all and end all metal pickup don't have. If you want to get 100% out of them for metal, they should be used to drive the front end of an already high gain, high output tube amp. And you need to want what they offer ie. compressed dynamics, flat frequency response, something of a sterility to the clean sound Personally I'd go for a well wound set of passives any day
Some old ass youtube video, but damn that sound. I am speechless it is that awesome.
Well it looks like I may have about £500 to spend, so I might just get the amp and keep on saving for something new. [editline]26th December 2010[/editline] Maybe even a proper non modelling amp maybe, but I know nothing of that.
I don't know whether to buy a Peavey Vypyr or keep my MG50DFX and save up for a new guitar, anyone think it would be worth buying a new amp?
Ditch the Marshall and buy a proper tube amp.
like one of these
Ditch the Marshall and buy a proper tube amp.
Im a 16 year old who's mom tells me to turn my amp down as soon as she gets home, I doubt a tube amp would reach its full potential, unfortunately :saddowns: [editline]26th December 2010[/editline] I've heard Blackstar are a good brand
Im a 16 year old who's mom tells me to turn my amp down as soon as she gets home, I doubt a tube amp would reach its full potential, unfortunately :saddowns: [editline]26th December 2010[/editline] I've heard Blackstar are a good brand
Lots of good amps have switchable modes so you can squeeze power out of them at lower volumes. Like the Mesa 5:50. It has a 5-watt mode, and a 50-watt mode. Or the Orange Tiny Terror.
Are they good for metal? (Hate to sound like a 12 year old)
Are they good for metal? (Hate to sound like a 12 year old)
Mesa is known for only two things: Beautifully clean class A amps, and pure metal. So, yes. As for the Orange, I believe it's Nonikai that has one, ask him. ...Him, or Darkslicer. God I keep confusing them >.>
Here's a picture of my new guitar. Incredible sound, everything feels complete and amazing with that guitar.
I was looking over the Damien Elite I got today, and noticed some flaws. The binding on the headstock looks "smeared", one of the tuners is MISSING A FUCKIN SCREW on the back of it, and the bridge pickup has one of its screws going in like freakin sideways. Returning it tomorrow, possibly for the same, or just getting cash money. If I get cash I can maybe save it for a better seven or eight string.
Haha, I'd never be able to afford that Mesa anyway, but the Tiny Terror is within reach!
Are they good for metal? (Hate to sound like a 12 year old)
The 5:50 I tried is not a gain nut's amp. If you want high(ish) gain/decent to good tube tone/low volume/fair price, try a Jet City JCA20 or a Blackstar HT20.
Haha, I'd never be able to afford that Mesa anyway, but the Tiny Terror is within reach!
The 5:25 is similar and significantly less money (though still quite pricey, as are all Mesa products unfortunately).
The 5:50 I tried is not a gain nut's amp. It won't give you a brutal, cutting death metal tone, but it works fine for thrash, prog. metal, etc. Granted it doesn't hold a freaking candle to the Triple Rec, but that also costs about $3,500 US.
I want a marshall 2266 damn it
Im a 16 year old who's mom tells me to turn my amp down as soon as she gets home, I doubt a tube amp would reach its full potential, unfortunately :saddowns: [editline]26th December 2010[/editline] I've heard Blackstar are a good brand
I know I'm all excited and biased because I just got that Club 40, but I've had the opportunity to test a number of Blackstar products and I can't say enough good things about them. If you want something that sounds really good at a low volume, check out the HT-5: http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Blackstar-HT5-Series-5W-1x10-Tube-Guitar-Combo-Amp?sku=483559 They also make an HT-5 head with matching 1x10 cab if you want a mini stack. The whole thing was basically designed to sound like a massive ballsy tube amp at bedroom volume. If you wanna go a little bigger than 5 watts, try the HT Studio 20: http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Blackstar-Venue-Series-HT-Studio-20-20W-Tube-Guitar-Combo-Amp?sku=423766 I spent a couple days with that one and can vouch for how good it sounds and how loud it can get. I didn't personally play with the HT-5, but based on the quality of their other products I'm pretty sure it does everything it claims to do.
Im liking the look of the HT 20, Ill have to try one out at some point in time
It's pretty cool, the only disappointment for me is that none of the amps cheaper than the Club 40 have the 2 voicing options on the OD channel. Still, the 5 and the 20 put out some great tones, and all of their products have the ISF feature. Another option is to get a tube pedal and simply run it into the CD input on the MG50DFX. I did this for a long time with an HT Dual pedal and my MG100HDFX. I used the pedal for the tone and the head as a power amp. http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Blackstar-HT-Series-HTDUAL-Tube-Dual-Distortion-Guitar-Effects-Pedal?sku=152010 Great pedal, has a choice of 2 OD channels. Again, comes with the ISF feature. http://www.altomusic.com/shop/Blackstar-Ht--Blackfire-Gus-G--Metal-Valve-Distortion-Pedal_pid105817.am If you can find one, this is another pedal possibility if you want crazy screaming metal. Check out the demo video on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouJnfV8bI7A
...Him, or Darkslicer. God I keep confusing them >.>
Darkslicer is the one who gets voted off the island repeatedly because of his frequent use of Line 6 products.
If you want to get 100% out of them for metal, they should be used to drive the front end of an already high gain, high output tube amp.
Explains why I'm having such a hard time getting a decent tone out of my modelers with the 707s on my Agile, compared to my last guitar.
And you need to want what they offer ie. compressed dynamics, flat frequency response, something of a sterility to the clean sound.
I do like all of that, though. Fuck, now I'm considering buying a tube pedal again. I really gotta find a guitar with 85xs in it and see how those sound through a modeling amp, but no stores near me have anything with them.
I took the EQ on my amp and scooped the mids, and on my 10 band EQ I spiked the mids... it sounds amazing :0
I play in a Sludge/Doom/Progressive/Stoner Metal band (we're very experimental...) so yes. Orange is marvelous for my metal needs. It also looks like a toaster which is just bonus points.
I feel like an idiot because I got a guitar for Christmas, and I have no real clue what it is. It's an Ibanez from the GIO series, but I'm not sure if it's a GRG or what. Came in THIS I'm aware it says GRG on the specs, but it doesn't look like a 170DX, or even a 150. I'll try to get a pic of it. First time playing guitar, I played about 3 hours and learned quite a few chords, and attempted to learn the intro to Smoke on the Water (so much cliche). Got it down, but I have to play it slow. Looking forward to playing at least 2 hours a day. I fucking love it already.
I started off playing 2 hours a day, in one big block It's better to do it in 1/2 hour intervals, if you're doing something difficult you will lose interest and if you keep at it you'll crack it
I just watch tv while playing, play the same thing over for about 30 or so minutes and next time I play, I play it so easily. Multitasking does wonders :smug:
You are a god
