I caught a wild snake and I still keep it as a pet. It eats just fine and is perfectly happy in it's habitat.
my general rule of thumb, if it isn't venomous then it can live.

If it isn't venomous, get a really large winter jacket+some gloves, pick it up by grabbing it and placing your fingers behind it's bottom jaw, and your thumb on it's head. Take it to the woods or something. We get snakes around us all the time during the summer, and that's what we do with the non venomous ones, if they are venomous though, they get a shovel to the head.
