Wasn't there a point at which someone tried to alchemize what they didn't know what a Matriorb and it costed tons of grist?

I remember Jane's fedora having the matriorb as one of it's component items in that crockercorp captcha reversing thing. The fact the matriorb isn't being made from that and instead is being voided is odd.
Also I feel like it was so certain that Condesce would turn around and be a hero but maybe it really is hitlers all the way down.
