First impressions:
1. I love how in the first few pages all John does is hang up a poster.
2. Despite everything we learn about him in this part of the comic, he is still a new character, lacking in any personality. It is amazing to note that the next 24 hours of his life put him on the road to becoming an amazingly well developed character.
3. This is obvious, but it is also, once again, surprising how mundane everything is at the beginning.
4. But also hilarious: TG: why did the fat kid or whoever drank it know what piss tasted like

Sometimes its ignorance but sometimes its simply not being informed about stuff by his friends as well.
None of the other beta kids seem to trust john with any knowledge.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt the exactly what ignorance is? Either way, you're right. John is incredibly ill informed.
Ignorance is usually seen as something imposed on oneself. Ignorance, the way many use it, does not apply to when someone is not told something.
I suppose at the beginning, John is just not informed. I suppose you could say that he gets more oblivious as things happen around him without his knowing, without anyone intentionally keeping information from him.
