I find single cut basses sexy like the one below. Only the lower horn on this model doesn't seem quite right to me.

Status sell graphite necks for my bass, £286. I wonder if they will do their fret-LED mod on it...
Ok, so what´s the difference really between a J-bass and a P-bass? I understand a J-bass more suitable for jazz and funky stuff and a P-bass is pretty much for everything but mostly rock-y stuff and alike? And if I´d by a Squier P-bass, should I buy a Standard or an Affinity or a Special or what? Is there really that much of a difference between them? Also, I have a 2 watt Micro Cube for my guitar, so would I really need a 75 watt rumble for my bass or would a 30 watt one or less suffice for practice?
Jazz bass has a different body shape, neck shape, and pickups. Note here how the shape towards the bridge is jutting out a bit further towards the knobs than it is up closer to the player. A p bass doesn't have this, but is more flat at the bottom, shown here: As well, with a jazz bass the string spacing is more narrow towards the headadstock, whereas the precision bass is more even, but still with a slight taper. And another difference is that the P bass has a single split pickup, which acts as a humbucker of sorts, and is voiced more on lows, making it good for rock rhythms. The jazz bass however, has two single coil pickups that are voiced towards the mids and highs, making it stand out in the mix a bit better, good for when the bass is taking more of an active role. [editline]06:23PM[/editline] also, you should be fine with just a 30 watt bass amp if you're just practicing in your bedroom or something. might be a bit weak if you're playing with other people though.
I never liked P-Basses, I found them a bit lacking in versatility... I can get damn close with my jazz copy just by turning a pickup off (Though you get hum, Note... Single coils)... Your mileage may vary but if I had a choice as a single bass I would buy a Jazz. Aside from that, the neck on a jazz bass isn't as wide as a P-Bass (at least on Fender models) Avoid the Affinity series. For practising 30 Watts is ample, You would be able to jam with a drum kit fine with 30W. If you do any sort of gig with a decent P.A you don't even need an amp (I have done this a few times... Though one can help as a personal monitor). I have a 5W Bass micro cube that is great for practising at home, it will never do for any sort of rock rehearsal on anything with a drum kit, but that isn't what it was designed for! How you use your amp will have a big impact on how much sound you get out of it. It sickens me when I see bassists thinking they will get more sound by cranking the "Bass" up on the EQ. If you need more volume and you are really pushing your amp, Head for the low-mids, Boosting the bass will just use all the power in rumbling the floor and flapping trousers. I better stop before I go way off topic :o

You can let it be if you're in an ensemble or dodge it if you're solo and it still sounds pretty good. I'd say get the jazz as well- if you just wanted a generic "rock" bass I'd go with an epi Thunderbird or something. Sound-wise, a P bass doesn't do much these days that another bass doesn't do better, it just sounds retro. Maybe that's your thing, I just wouldn't opt for it otherwise unless you've actually played one and liked the body or something.
Just had my weekly guitar lesson Once again my determination has skyrocketed, getting better and better at improvising, next 2 weeks I have off and I have a kickass show to go to on the first saturday with all my friends Life is pretty fucking good
Just came home from my guitar class and my teacher was all like when I walked in, "Thou shalt know your 9th chords." Needless to say I was pretty astonished when I walked out of that class.
What was the one instrument that had ridiculous amount of buttons? I believe it was sometype of a blowing instrument.

Thanks a lot for the help, everyone! I´ll propably get a jazz bass now that I´ve listened to both. J-basses have some character whereas a p-bass just sounds really bland. Haven´t tested them yet, though. There isn´t really a huge instrument store around where I live so I don´t know if I´ll get to try both, but I´m pretty sure I´ll go with a Squier J-bass. There´s a few options I´ve been thinking of: a Squier Standard J-Bass, a Deluxe one or a Squier Standard P-Bass Special. I quite prefer the sleeker look of the Deluxe J-bass but it costs 60€ more and I don´t know if it makes it up for the price in any other area (60€ isn´t much, though). The P-Bass Special has both a split coil and a single coil so it either brings the best of both worlds or just the worst. I have no idea whitch one I should go for... I´m kind of leanng towards the Deluxe but the P-bass special is enticing too, because of its (possible) versatility. Has anyone ever tried one?
Just came home from my guitar class and my teacher was all like when I walked in, "Thou shalt know your 9th chords." Needless to say I was pretty astonished when I walked out of that class.
Make sure you use them or employ them. With rock or metal where you'll have a lot of distortion you'll want to be creative making these chords, for example: you may play a B power chord (which includes the 9 of E), the bass may play an E, the the keyboard may just play E minor or just the G. All of this will make up an E minor 9. It's hard to come over the issue of distortion, so breaking it up into other instruments work. Something I like doing with extended chords is to double track a rhythm, having one play a major triads and the other playing all extended chords. This gives it an effect where the chord is very rooted, but sounds more interesting. If you want to get a bit fancy, have one person play the triad and have the other play the chord a third up. So if the chord was A minor, you'd have someone playing a C major on top of it which will give it a Am7 feel but a bit different. You can even try have someone play the root chord and the 5th chord, this will give you a 9 chord, and if you include the 7 on the 5th chord, you get an 11 chord, which hopefully doesn't sound as muddy as it would with just one instrument.

My school band is doing a performance of Phantom of the Opera and I'm playing the upright bass. Only 1 problem, I don't have an upright bass to practice on at home and the music for Phantom of the Opera is damn hard. So now I need to buy either a fretless J-Bass and make due with that or get a cheap electric upright. Suggestions?
Any pedalboard fans here? Post some pics :)

When I was in high school, they let us borrow almost anything. Same for college, you just had to convince them you weren't a shithead and bam, free tuba rental. I wouldn't try using another instrument, just see if you can borrow theirs, rent one on the cheap, or just stay late to practice. [editline]10:32PM[/editline] Also, guess who just got Komplete 7? I cannot wait until I get this workstation up, Rammfire is going to kick so much ass.
