Because Boss.
Boss is a very, very expensive brand. Good quality, high price.
Doesn't help that the Australian dollar isn't exactly doing too well in terms of market value, either. So now that high-price Boss pedal costs even MORE.
What? Boss pedals are shit. Actually, cheap shit that everybody has.
what about Artec? anyone know about those?

Artec are pretty much like Behringer. Pretty low quality, not terrible sounding but unlikely to last too long
I'm not sure where to discuss this, but my favorite part about The Acacia Strain's new album are the guitars.
Wormwood is just ridiculously fucking heavy.

Artec are great. I have one of their wah pedals and construction is top notch and is properly True bypass, not buffered bypass or any variation thereof.
It's got about 17 gigs worth of use on the clock so far, though I don't use it a whole lot these days (The slap outro to Power of Equality mainly)
The construction inside is neat and looks well made, I wouldn't dare compare this to a Behringer product, having seen the inside of their pedals it is chalk and cheese.
So construction isn't really the issue here, Sound comes first and the only way to figure that out is try it, everyone has different standards.
Well I'm getting an Artec wah sometime soon anyway for my bass. maybe later on down the line I'll get a better pedal.

I've never heard any complaints about Boss' distortion pedals. The rest of their pedals I couldn't care less about, but that's me.

Wow it's finally catching up. Granted the British pound is now worth about $1.50 (down from $2.00+ not that long ago)
Only problem is the slight delay, throws me off while I'm playing
If your soundcard doesn't have a real ASIO driver, you'll need to get one and see if you can bring the latency down.
http://www.asio4all.com/
2-4ms delay is great, 6ms delay is usually still really playable unless you're doing something I know you aren't, 8 and up is going to start being spotty.
Still, see about getting a proper interface. Native Instruments just put the Audio Kontrol 1 on sale, and it comes with Guitar Rig and Cubase.[/blatant product placement]

Are there any programs that work like "Chord Pickout" except tabs out every note from a mp3 file?
Closest I can think of for that is the "Chord wizard" in band-in-a-box. Which does a pretty good job, considering how hard the process is.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/286964/1600-BIABpc_AudioChordWizard.jpg
It doesn't "Tab it out", but the window does give an over view of the notes being played.
Come to think of it, if the MP3 contained one instrument (making the output cleaner), you could export the MIDI instructions and import it into something like guitar pro, thus tabbing it out.

Australia just gets charged more because companies can get away with it.

This too. Didn't Year Zero go for something like $30AUS when it came out?
don't you guys get charged more because importing shit to australia is expensive
anyone ever heard of the guitar brand "eleca?" my dad gave me his guitar, an eleca strat copy that he bought at a thrift store or something for like $70. i'm considering using it as project guitar since i already have an epiphone lp standard and ibanez rg120. gonna change out the pickups on the eleca because they buzz and get some new strings on there.
they buzz
It could just be because of interference, in which case, line the cavities with copper foil and you should be fine.
yeah it could just be the interface, but i have a feeling its more the quality of the pickups since they are stock on a $100 guitar.

this is my doodling around for a second on it
Doug I never knew u were such an accomplished musician.
I don't know what buzzing you're talking about though. It sounds good.
What? Boss pedals are shit. Actually, cheap shit that everybody has.
EXACTLY. Boss pedals should not cost above 100. Get yourself some boutique or just another brand that isn't like boss. There tuners are good though.
Electro Harmonix
MXR
Fulltone
all good stuff.

Distortion pedals are, mehhhh alright. Sound is a bit tinny I don't exactly know how to describe it in words but you can hear it.

Ibanez makes some good pedals and they aren't that expensive.

Well I don't have a need for them now, since my Crate GTD 120 has all the distortion I need, but if I ever decide to use my tube again it SERIOUSLY needs a pedal. It's only a class A.
But yes as far as other effects go, Boss really isn't all they're chalked up to be at all. Especially not compared to MXR or DigiTech.
I actually really want a DigiTech whammy and an MXR phaser, but sadly, have no money for either.
Distortion pedals are, mehhhh alright. Sound is a bit tinny I don't exactly know how to describe it in words but you can hear it.
They are very flat-sounding. Too crunch and not enough attack and growl.
