And get the Finger-per-fret thing burned into your brain. - Don't know what skill level you are at currently? On a completely unrelated note, Trying to modify a technique you have practised for years is insanely hard, I couldn't get the sweep down using my thumb but I am quick enough switching to finger style for the run down and back to slap. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/286964/MM%20-%20Power.mp3 Does need cleaning up a bit, I just need to get some more definition out of those 4 notes, should come with practice. Also dead G string has irritatingly short sustain :/
I have no experience with any types of guitar

Look up tabs for your favourite rock song and start playing (pick or fingers, doesn't really matter in the beginning).
Learn the notes for the first five frets on the low E-string and for the first 7 frets on the A-string.
Try to play songs by just looking at the chords rather than tabs. Use what you learned from the previous step.
Learn how to use the rest of the fretboard. Try playing octaves!
Play along with songs without looking up tabs or chords. Use your ears!
Improvise patterns and learn how to use scales.
Have fun!
Learn how to read bass clef. Sure, you can go find tabs, but in the long run, knowing how to read music is very beneficial [editline]Edited:[/editline] If you don't already know how
It's actually not that bad. I think it's a good technique to be able to use, but it shouldn't always be used. For example, Hendrix used it a lot to play chords like this, otherwise practically impossible:
---3--- ---1--- ------- ---3--- ------- ---1---
Sure, you could barre that, but it would be difficult to slide it around and get it to sound articulate.
Cool I mean, sometimes I fret with my thumb for the lulz, but not usually. I wouldn't want it as a habit [editline]25th October 2010[/editline]
Okay I lose Anyway, I developed a technique where my thumb is wrapped around the neck at all times, and that bad for some reason
I used to do that, but I got over it fast My teacher just told me that my hand was curling around the neck, so I spent a week learning how to fret properly After I do it occasionally, but for stuff like bends and hammer ons it needs to be done
Okay, so, whichever one of you suggested rock discipline and speed kills- which am I supposed to start with? Also, what're the equivalents of those for bass?
Thinking of new strings soon, I want 9's. I've been using D'Addario 10's and I want to try something else, any recommendations?
I hate it when strings break.
Okay, so, whichever one of you suggested rock discipline and speed kills- which am I supposed to start with?
Oh woah, I think that's directed at me because I remembering telling you a little while ago. I haven't been keeping up with this thread at all, but I just so happened to catch it. I'd go with Speed Kills first. A lot shorter exercise list. I can most definitely say that if you practice that stuff daily and in tempo you'll become fast and accurate. I've haven't been doing too many exercises for the last couple of months so now I'm a good bit sloppy with my fast playing, but if you do the exercises daily it'll pay off. Rock Discipline is real nice, lot of exercises, many of them being pretty difficult but will likely yield better results than Speed Kills. The approach to a lot of it is that you should be able to play anything the same starting on an upstroke or downstroke while keeping time. My main issue with Rock Discipline is that it has a lot of exercises, and it's easy to get bored with them and stop half way through them, so you need more of drive to go through all the exercises.
There really should be a bass discussion thread.
Nah. A bass guitar is a guitar really. It would just clog up the forums. No one here really minds if you talk about basses here because most of us are guitar and bass guitar players.
There really should be a bass discussion thread.
I thought you played it for 5 seconds and after that stopped giving a fuck. [editline]16:33PM[/editline] Also nah we don't need one, bass is also discussed here as Nonikai said.
There really should be a bass discussion thread.
First there was, then it vanished, eventually a new one was opened, the old one reappeared from the depths of something and now they're both gone.
so I sold my telecaster. so I'm gonna have cash for new bass strings soon. what should I get? [editline]26th October 2010[/editline] 4 string, mostly standard tuning [editline]26th October 2010[/editline] 4 string, mostly standard tuning
Ugh. I dont really have any rock in my collection, just grindcore, tech death and shoegaze. Shame I cant find tabs at all for most of my favorite shoegaze bands
That's a major disadvantage to liking unpopular music, you can't find tabs anywhere for it. But that does give you some encouragement to do it out by ear and publish the tab.

try finding glam metal Pantera bass tabs.
No kidding. It fucking sucks that I cant find shit to play some Im just playing shit from those online youtube lessons. and Nonikai, you like Isis? Fucking love that band
I can't get enough of ISIS. Oceanic is probably my favourite album with them.
I love that one too. Ive got Wavering Radiant on vinyl
I demand it.
If I had a camera Id take some pics. Inside the actual place where the vinyls go has awesome starry night art work
So I'm looking for my first tube amp... I play mainly metal, so a lot of my friends have told me to look at the Peavey 6505. I tried it out and I gotta say, that thing puts out a hell of a sound. Opinions?
Sunn O))) amps only
I sold my Jackson Performer PS-4 about a week ago, and I haven't gotten around to shipping it. So about 2 days ago I printed a shipping label with the weight at 10lbs. I took it in, the package is 13lbs. I can't ship it and they can't add postage to a "barcode" shipping label. Ok. I voided that shipping label and bought the cheaper one off of ebay for $22.40. I just put it on, and I received a message from ebay saying the buyer had opened a case against me. Just my luck.

You can't really use a peavey to get nice clean tones, but that's just my opinion. I'd say go for the Orange Rockerverb, or the OR50. Mesa/Boogie is also a very viable option. The 5:50 and Roadster seem to be a great choice aswell as the stilleto. You could take a look into a few Blackstar amps aswell like the Series 1. I hear nothing but compliments about it.
