So I'm looking for my first tube amp... I play mainly metal, so a lot of my friends have told me to look at the Peavey 6505. I tried it out and I gotta say, that thing puts out a hell of a sound. Opinions?
Mesa/Boogie put out an incredible sound, if you're willing to shell out.
Vox AC30 for metal? are you high or somthing?
nope. went to a rock school thing at the beginning of the year with Craig Blundell from Roland. One of the amps that they supplied was a Vox AC30, and my friend who plays metal borrowed someone's multi effects pedal, plugged it in and said it was the best amp he's ever used.
[editline]26th October 2010[/editline]
did you think I meant with no effects?
Who wants an amp that you need to buy expensive pedals for to get a decent distortion tone?
Not me, I cannot see the sense in that purchase but hey it's your money so go nuts
well he never played without the pedal that day so I dunno what it's like without

I've had my Epiphone Special II for 5 years. It's been through a lot, and recently it's started falling apart. The nut fell off, and I had to superglue it back on, one of the machine heads fell off and the screw hole was threaded and I needed to replace it with a bigger screw, and the rest of the machine heads are loose, the pickups are also loose and so is the jack, even after I've tightened them about a thousand times.
tl;dr I've decided to get a new guitar. So any suggestions? I'd like to stick with Epiphone since I'm used to it, but I'm not afraid to try a new one, although you must have good reasoning behind it. Thanks for the help.
Are you wanting to stick to Les Paul style or do you want to try new shapes?
and what's your budget

Go to a shop, and play some guitars from the PRS SE range. Buy the one you like the most.
Hey guys, I've had my Roland cube 30-x for a while now and I'm thinking about getting a bigger amp to play with my friend who plays drums because when being cranked loud, the cube starts to sound bad (and I don't wanna blow it up). I've been either considering a Roland Cube 80-X or maybe a tube amp in the same prices (around 500-800 CAD) I'm trying to get a Zakk Wylde kind of tone (in the 90's) but without getting a marshall stack cauz it's too loud & too expensive at moment (considering I also play at home alone ) Got any good tube amps or recommendations?
Taking this post out of dust as I never had any answers
I'm looking at getting a small practice amp, something that is decent overall, nothing too special. Some effects would be nice and I have a price range of about $100-$150. Doesn't necessarily have to be new either. Any ideas?

We've gone over this so many times on facepunch. The Roland cube 30 is the way to go.
I have a Cube X15, how is the Cube 30 better in anyway?
I have a Cube X15, how is the Cube 30 better in anyway?
As far as I read, the Cube 30 has effects whereas the X15 does not. If you're gonna upgrade from the cube though you should really look into a tube amp. Never go from Modeling to Modeling amp. If you want to split hairs the Roland 30 also has a larger diameter speaker.
But my X15 has 5 BOSS effects...

oh and I didn't understand the second half of your post since I'm a beginner.

Good clean tone is something which you can't really MAKE with pedals, it's like the fundamental of tone. Having an amp which is absolutely amazing on clean but not powerful enough or just not good sounding on distortion is considerably easier to modify to make a great metal or rock sound, whereas it's much harder to make an amp which has an amazing distorted channel sound good on clean if it's clean channel isn't all that great.
Most (or a lot anyway) metal amps have crap clean channels, most clean amps have crap high gain tones. High gain is just easy to develop from a good basic signal, not the other way around.

This, but while I'm a PRS fanboy, remove the "from the PRS SE range." from that post and it's bang on.

I beg to differ, you can make clean tones sparkle with an eq pedal...
You can improve a clean tone with an EQ and other effects, but you'll still never have as good as a genuine great clean tone. A clean amp with a high quality distortion pedal (no Boss Metalcore POS's) will get you a great distorted tone.

You obviously haven't heard of the Peavey Vypyr my friend.

Yes I have, I still find the roland superior.
Buy a used Gibson for 600 bucks...
Like a Les Paul or Sg Studio

Really?
wow.
I'd say either Roland Cube or a Peavey Vypyr are both great choices when it comes to starters amps.
I'd like to stick to the Les Paul shape, yes. But it's not that important I just want a guitar that feels the same as my old one did.
My price range is anywhere up to $1000 (AUD)

Nope.
Well I would go with mesa boogie, but the price is just way too high. I played a rectifier today, and I gotta say- It was absolutely amazing...
My local shop has a Peavey 6505 112+ for like $550, so I'm looking into that... I just dunno if it will be worth it.

Unless you have it mic'd through a PA or there is no drummer, no.
You will need a minimum of 75 watts solid state to really be heard over a drummer without a PA/mic setup.

The 6505 is a great amp. I figured you were talking the full stack since you didn't mention it was a combo, otherwise I never would've bothered mentioning the Triple Rec since a half stack for that is $3,500 US.
Have to say though the 6505 is a really nice amp. Easy to use, too. It's a very basic amp with alot of raw power. Not going to give you the best cleans in the world, but it will give you a full-on metal tone, pedal-free.
Petri Lindroos from Ensiferum uses an EVH 6505 (which is basically a regular 6505 with a little more gain and wattage) and he plays some god damn heavy folk metal.
I like Jacksons, Mustaines, King Vs and cheap stuff, so I plan on getting a JS30KV
[editline]27th October 2010[/editline]
Also, never use more than half the distortion in your pedal. They're tone boosters, using it all will screw with your tone.

Boston - Can'tcha Say You Believe In Me, from "Third Stage" has like the best guitar solo ever (it also happens to be their best song overall). I am so gonna record a cover of it.
