Any tips on how I should start to learn guitar without taking lessons? I have a mexican strat sitting around from when my sister used to play, but I have no idea to begin. I'm guessing learning the notes on the fretboard, then scales, then notes, then chords. I'm really unsure though.
I'd probably start off by doing exercises. You need to build strength in your fingers before you can really fret chords or play anything with any real dexterity. Of course it's still important to learn the notes and everything else, and you should break it up from doing exercises. Exercises are boring and you should do some enjoyable stuff as well. Learn to read tablature (it's pretty self explanatory) and then work on some exercises like this:
u d u d u d u d etc... E||----------------------------------|----------4-5-6-7-8-7-6-5---------|----------------------------------|| B||----------------------------------|--4-5-6-7-----------------8-7-6-5-|----------------------------------|| G||--------------------------4-5-6-7-|----------------------------------|--8-7-6-5-------------------------|| D||------------------4-5-6-7---------|----------------------------------|----------8-7-6-5-----------------|| A||----------4-5-6-7-----------------|----------------------------------|------------------8-7-6-5---------|| E||--4-5-6-7-------------------------|----------------------------------|--------------------------8-7-6-5-||
The u's and d's on the tab here are denoting an example of a picking pattern where you pluck down and up in alternation. You can also play just picking down, just pickin up, or anything else you like really. The purpose is to build strength and muscle memory. It's best to practice with a metronome, and only to go as fast as you can while still playing perfectly.
...then do that but only pick each string once
Thanks! Best deal I have came across in a while besides two strat copies i got at a yard sale for five dollars with a small marshall amp...
Some of us get all the luck I guess
...then do that but only pick each string once
As in, learn legato. Also, my dad gave me this. He got it for free from somewhere. That's a Washburn B2. Sounds great!
You should try it once. Start with your thumb only.
For a long period(about a year) I adored Mark Knopfler and played only with my fingers. Now I mostly play with pick, but for some stuff you have to play with fingerpicking so I do. So yeah, I can say by my experience that a pick is more comfortable to me.
Goddamn Scandinavians and their natural talent with melodic death metal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL-UWOS5Xa4 That's an 11 year old who's been playing for almost 3 years... playing Children of Bodom. Look at his tiny fingers. LOOK AT THEM.
That does not look hard at all, I could easily have learnt that when I was 11
Your e-peen growing yet?
If I won the lottery I would deffinately buy this. Guess whos guitar is it?
Buckethead.
Your e-peen growing yet?
Not saying that to brag, I just don't understand why that would be hard
Buckethead.
I must agree

I'm kind of a newbie(i can play The Last of the Mohicans) and a cheapskate so I bought this. Ibanez GRG 170 DX Marshall MG30fx (400€ combined) My guitar is black so you can see if there is dust on it, it's pretty easy to clean but I can't reach between the pickups because of the strings, what do you guys use to clean between the pickups? (how do i thumb images, because the picture is huge)
Buckethead's :)
Are those two killswitches?
That does not look hard at all, I could easily have learnt that when I was 11
Did you watch the solo? Could you have sweep picked like he can when you were 11?
Did you watch the solo? Could you have sweep picked like he can when you were 11?
I missed that part :0 [editline]08:15PM[/editline]
Are those two killswitches?
I wonder this too
I wonder this too
Maybe they're two buttons for igniting the fireworks.
If I won the lottery I would deffinately buy this. This Gibson Les Paul carries 2 red "arcade" style push-button kill switches to mute the output of the guitar, as well as a push/pull switch on the Tone potentiometer to access the bridge pickup's split-coil feature.
Oh so it's a killswitch and a splitswitch
I'm so getting one of these http://folk-instruments.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-Iceman-UIC10-Ukulele?sku=584518
Oh so it's a killswitch and a splitswitch
No they are both killswitches. [editline]04:38AM[/editline] This never gets old
-snip-
What exactly do kill/split switches do
What exactly do kill/split switches do
Kill switches kill the sound, I believe.
It cuts the signal. Used in the riff of Buckethead's "Jordan" for example. So rather than toying with the cable (like in the above vid), you simply use a killswitch instead.
I see, thanks
What exactly do kill/split switches do
Mutes the output of the guitar.
