I'm starting to care a whole lot less about playing fast. For a while I was trying to get just below a shred speed, but I'm not really caring about reaching that. I don't know, I feel like if I came up with solos that were mostly made of shred material that it really wouldn't be too impressive when compared to what I could do with some slower passages. I just kind of feel like the shred like solos would be more a showing off my technical skill than my ability to make music. I think a good balance would allow me to do both especially since really fast parts can add a lot to the music and they also can sound really good, but right now I feel like I could care less about getting to an extreme speed.
I agree.
also this video helps with putting some images to what has already been posted
Uh...weird. I hold it like a pencil currently, and I don't have the pick angled the way he did. It's my index finger that gets jammed up funny. If I do this holding it like a card business it's the same angle and length from my wrist. [editline]11th November 2010[/editline] Makes my fingers more comfortable but tilts the pick way too much, it's like I'm holding it almost perfectly sideways.
I held my pick like he does from day 1 god I'm cool [editline]12th November 2010[/editline] hence the snowman avatar
I've always held it like that.
Hey guys I just got my first guitar and I have some issues. A. Harmonic Pinches. I have looked everysingle pinch tutorial in YouTube, but I don't hane any clue how to do it. ''Lightly touch the string with your thumb'' what the hell? Is it the side of the tumb or the back of it or the tip of it, and I do not see those in the video, and how hard do I have to touch it. I actually once got it (by mistake) work with the low E string, but how the heck would I supposed to do it on for exaple the high E string as it is for me (I think) impossible to ''gently touch the string with your thumb'' because there are so many obstacles on the way. B. Alternate picking. This is maybe the meaniest thing for me. I can strum downwards easily, but upwards not. Let me demonstrate [img_thumb]http://img574.imageshack.us/img574/8761/picking.png[/img_thumb] The dot is the string, the red triangle is the pick and the arrow indicates the direction of the strum. 1. I sweep with the pick downwards. Everything goes OK. 2. I sweep with the pick upwards. It doesn't go smooth, as the pick is in a position that it more like ''pushes'' the string and not going gently over it. The picks doesn't bend into the same form as in picture 1. It is kinda hard to explaint this, but I hope you understand me. You can always ask for further information. And the last issue now, is this: C. If I want to play a song, that goes pretty fast, like this [img_thumb]http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/9042/fastmelody.png[/img_thumb] Then do I have to pluck everysingle note on my guitar? Or just pluck the A and then with my fingers I tap all the notes that are on the A-string or what the fuck. Because that is hard, and I have always done it with plucking everything, but that is slow and makes my hand hurt, but that is also due to Issue B. Thanks very very much if anyone can help me out! Halahazam
I hate to say it man, for pinch harmonics are really hard to learn how to do Try doing them around the 12th/10th fret on the G string, and use your neck pickup because it's way easier. You should probably learn how to do regular harmonics first

It is tricky to learn at first but once you get it, you will never forget how to do them. Also, the more gain the easier it is.
New shiz. Peephole this time. The music is heavy, don't bother listening if you don't like that style. My friend did clean vocals, I did dirty vocals. Another friend and I did the guitar, bass, and drum work. This was the first song we made. The band fell apart after most of us left, even when new members replaced us. This is just a little of what our band's sound was originally like.

Took the time to learn Toxic Garbage Island by Gojira. I learned it swiftly and easily so I felt a tad smug and tried to take on A sight to behold. Turns out I need tapping practice.
That's not even that hard to tap? :raise:
They're using Peavey 5150's, those have like ridiculous amounts of gain. I on the other hand have a Orange Dual Terror with a floyd rose. So the strings are tight as fuck and it feels like as hard as I try to make it sound clean I need to press harder and HARDER.
That reminds me, I am going to go check out a Peavey 6505 today, and some other amps. Maybe I'll find the amp for me!
Interesting, I too was thinking of learning that song... but I already know Toxic Garbage Island, and I picked up the tapping part pretty quickly :v
Yeah, it's not that hard. It's just getting the strength in my finger to do it. Sludge metal guitarists don't tap :smith:
Sludge Metal guitarists also don't go above 100 BPM :buddy:
This is not tRuE!!!! Mastodon and Kylesa will prove my point....
Steve Vai and Malmsteen all go above 100 bpm, it's too bad theyre all huge douches who can't incorporate allusion or anything satisfying in their music.
Steve Vai and Malmsteen all go above 100 bpm, it's too bad theyre all huge douches who can't incorporate allusion or anything satisfying in their music.
Okay, back the fuck up...I can see calling Malmsteen a douche, because...well...he is. And I can see hating on him for lightning fast playing because not everybody likes that. But how can you possibly believe Steve Vai does not make even remotely satisfying music?
But how can you possibly believe Steve Vai does not make even remotely satisfying music?
~OpInIoNs~ You couldn't pay me to listen to Steve Vai. To me, his slow stuff sounds like bad fucking music and the fast stuff sounds like Kurzweil made a guitar composer with a good randomizing function and gimmick library. Also choke on the stage presence, it's like he's three and hyped up on Mountain Dew. But it's not like that's backed up by SCIENCE or something, it's just haters hating.
Well, the 6505 was sold when I got there, just a 5150, which I actually didn't like. I play a Vox VT100 and I actually really, really, liked it. The Peaveys weren't in my price range anyways. I think I might get it :D EDIT: Actually, I am still set on the Bugera 6262, disregard me.
I think a lot of Vai's stuff is amazing. His live performances are on par or better than the studio version. There are a good number of his songs I wouldn't listen to twice though.

Think of how dumb malmsteen would look if he played Trilogy Suite with a classical orchestra! O SHI-

I think in that instance it's just the ensemble that makes it work. You can't not be awesome when backed by low brass. It doesn't work. You could be playing an eigenharp through a rusty muffler and you'd still sound good with a proper blat section.
Think of how dumb malmsteen would look if he played Trilogy Suite with a classical orchestra!
So was that sarcasm, or what? 'Cuz I thought that sounded awesome.
Maybe, because you can't hear the orchestra all the time. [editline]13th November 2010[/editline]
I think in that instance it's just the ensemble that makes it work.
