I've been playing a truckload of Sepultura's Schizophrenia. The rapid alternation of muted tremolo picking and releasing for an unmuted powerchord has burnt into my mind - or hand rather. The simplistic tapping also inspired me to use my finger rather than stabbing the string with my pick like I usually do. Now I can tap with my finger, tremolo pick accurately at the speed of light, switch from muting to not muting without clustering shit, and downpicking comfortably fast. Not to mention using the tremolo arm accurately. :smug:
I'm starting to care a whole lot less about playing fast. For a while I was trying to get just below a shred speed, but I'm not really caring about reaching that. I don't know, I feel like if I came up with solos that were mostly made of shred material that it really wouldn't be too impressive when compared to what I could do with some slower passages. I just kind of feel like the shred like solos would be more a showing off my technical skill than my ability to make music. I think a good balance would allow me to do both especially since really fast parts can add a lot to the music and they also can sound really good, but right now I feel like I could care less about getting to an extreme speed.
Yeah, I was playing Takayoshi Ohmura (specifically: The Cataclysm and Distant Thunder) After I played that, there I didn't care about playing fast. I had scalloped my neck, put 8 gauge strings on, and bought seymour duncan distortion pickups to mask his sound. Then I got to improv, I slapped on some 13s, got 5 springs in the back, put in the stock vintage pickups, and replaced the neck with the original. Jesus, I love this way more than playing fast now. I've gotten a lot more knowledge and been talked about/known more for what I do rather than what others do. Which I think is way more important if you actually care about going big. [editline]13th November 2010[/editline] Oh yeah, I play sloppy now too.. It's pretty fun hitting all of the strings at once and only playing one note. That would hurt my fingers WAY too much. I use DR medium-heavy .10s exclusively, love 'em to death. I float between wanting to play fast, and wanting to play mellow and melodic.
Is tapping with a pick really that bad?
Awesome Look, I can take photos too [img_thumb]http://i54.tinypic.com/23vm9e0.jpg[/img_thumb] :3
I know I'm quoting from a few pages back but your cat looks almost identical to mine

Yes cats are cute, but guitars are fucking sexy
Okay, back the fuck up...I can see calling Malmsteen a douche, because...well...he is. And I can see hating on him for lightning fast playing because not everybody likes that. But how can you possibly believe Steve Vai does not make even remotely satisfying music?
Steve Vai's a douche and his music is showy stuff that follows no real melodic structure. His improvising is also pretty bad, and his stage presence is gimmicky and stupid. My friends and I were watching the G3 DVD with him and John Petrucci. During one of the jams, I forget which, Joe Satriani starts a descending melodic sequence, and Petrucci continues it so that Vai can finish it off, but what does he do? He plays a whole load of harmonic dives and diminished scale runs :downs:
This guy is great
This guy is awesome. He's seems like such a dick but in a hilarious way.
what is his music too deep for you
lightning speed doesn't always mean no emotion
the least you could do is post a decent example
lightning speed doesn't always mean no emotion View YouTUBE video http://youtube.com/watch?v=kah0esffl-U
This is very true. My brother refuses to listen to any music with really technical solos and stuff because he instantly thinks that means it's devoid of all emotion, but he's incredibly wrong. Just look at players like John Petrucci, Joe Satriani, David Gilmour, and Mikael Akerfeldt, all capable of playing incredibly technically and with plenty of emotion.
the least you could do is post a decent example
I agree, Buckethead wasn't really the best choice. Paul Gilbert is awesome.
oh also this isn't that speedy but it's just a great guitar song
My brother refuses to listen to any music with really technical solos and stuff because he instantly thinks that means it's devoid of all emotion
What does this even mean? Give me a criteria for quantifying the amount of "emotion" in any given piece of music.
Get the fuck out of my fucking yard
This thread is now about cats
What does this even mean? Give me a criteria for quantifying the amount of "emotion" in any given piece of music.
My point was that he makes no sense with his argument...
•Rickenbacker 325c58 Body w/Three Humbucker Pickups(LP pickups&Bridge)
Definitely this, though maybe minihumbuckers would fit better with the 325 being quite small.
You seriously don't
Why not?
i have a paul reed smith r u guys jealous yet
Awesome me too :buddy: :v: [editline]13th November 2010[/editline]
You used to tap with your pick? :what:
Satch taps with his pick sometimes.
Overpriced sig guitar, makes you look like a fan boy, shit pickup, no versatility, surprisingly clunky neck
Plus a shitty floyd rose tremolo, takes you ages to tune and in order to detune to D or even to D#/Eb you have to adjust the springs in the back so the neck won't warp and so it will stay in tune. Only good thing about it is that it actually stays in tune forever once you have setupped it correctly. I have the cheap one ( LTD MMV-06? ) myself and I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy a guitar with a floyd rose because it's just too much trouble for stupid whammy action.
Awesome me too :buddy: [img_thumb]http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq87/Dopey_Trout/Photo0013.jpg?t=1289654787[/img_thumb] :v:
Fuck you guys :frown: Better get me a good job [editline]14th November 2010[/editline]
Satch taps with his pick sometimes. Just gives a different sound
I can't get a good clean sound tapping with my fingers, so I've always used my pick. Then again, I didn't really practice tapping much because I didn't think it would be a technique I would use much. I've totally turned away from shredding recently. I used to be all about the shred but now I'm just content to sit down, spend some time dialing in a really nice tone, and play something simple and groovy.
