My EVH Black and White Frankenstrat.
I'm halfway through making one now, just need to start on the stripes. And making the pickups. And drilling the quarter. And making a new neck...fuck.
I found out after buying my first guitar that it didn't have a truss rod. I didn't think it mattered, but now here it sits with an action of about 3 inches..
Acoustic?
Always use the lightest gauge you can find if you have no truss rod. I'm starting to like light gauge strings now, anyways. Really easy bending.

Ahh, jeez. That paint scheme is so overdone.
Alright here is some pics of my new guitar and amp, it plays like a dream.

Exact same walls and such.
What's the benefit of not having a truss rod, or is it just because of time/money/can't be fucked?
You never have to adjust the truss rod.
Ahh, jeez. That paint scheme is so overdone.
It's supposed to be, though

I think he meant overdone as in too many people do it
Bah, more people probably do sunburst, but I don't see anyone complaining about that

I think it looks good

Sunbursts generally don't apply to individual instruments though. Very rarely do you hear people go "I'm gonna finish it with a sunburst like ...'s guitar"
Whereas every other day you hear people talking about refinishing their guitars like Van Halen's Frankie, and it does get a bit tedious since they are referring to an arguably singular source
what about...
franken-burst

I really don't get people who are like this. I mean.. if you're gonna build your own guitar, why copy something that's been done a million times before? How fun is that? And I mean both shape-wise and paintjob-wise.

Not to mention money wise.
"You just spent $500 making a replica, how do you feel?"
Sunburst is bad ass. I love sun burst finishes. Precision bass, black pick guard, maple/rosewood neck with a tobacco burst finish? yes fucking please.

I think I'd feel pretty good.
I knew that you would now.
I like the paint pattern, though, I don't see why you'd copy the same positioning of lines. Should just make it random.

My pinkish strat is gone now, my room feels so empty :saddowns:
[tab]but now my wallet isn't[/tab]
Okay, I have another stupid question while I budget up what I pay for when and why.
So I decided fuck the LTD line and these Agiles, gonna go with a standard ESP. And I would get a 7-string and be done with it...but everything comes with these EMG 707s, and what I know for a fact works well for the kind of music I'm going to be doing is the 81 and 60 combo.
Would there be any reason to expect the 81-7 and 60-7 to sound markedly different from their six-string counterparts, or am I probably good with those? I keep thinking there has to be a difference in sound, but there's no way of getting them both in the same spot to hear it for myself.
Some people like the 707s, may as well see what they sound like first.
If they have similar outputs and they are both EMGs, they are probably going to sound close to the same.
FYI, pickups are nothing but coils with a certain kind of magnet, any differences (especially if they are the same brand and type of pickup) are going to be pretty subtle; and not be much more than a difference in coloring. In your case, I assume you're talking about the six and seven strings models of the same pickup. I doubt you'll hear much difference at all. The 7 string one might be just sound ever so slightly fatter because it's a wider coil.
Some people like the 707s, may as well see what they sound like first.
That's not an option.
I'm only wondering if the 81-7s and 60-7s sound (or are likely to sound) different from the 81s and 60s, and if so by how much. I've no intention to use anything but that sound.

I'm well aware of this, but I'm also aware of the twiddly nature of electronics. I'd be analogous to me calling the average guitar body nothing but a certain type of wood. It's true, but the nuances matter.
'course, you know that, but I think you're assuming I'm far less demanding than I am.

That would be what I said, yes.

That's what I'm looking for. Thanks.
I've had some breakthroughs with improv
I think it'll take some time to get it right, I'm going to get a book about improv or something eventually and do it from there.
I've figured out what chords sound good when, how to implement pinch harmonics well (I can do them perfectly now, and get that perfect metalcore scream I always wanted), and how to slide up and down so it sounds cool.
Problem is I tend to repeat myself, I'm going to try to make completely new stuff from different scales and I'm considering learning some minor stuff or at least experimenting with that, I've been mainly doing major kind of classic rock kinda stuff recently.
Sunburst is bad ass. I love sun burst finishes. Precision bass, black pick guard, maple/rosewood neck with a tobacco burst finish? yes fucking please.
No pickguard, only a control plate.

I've heard otherwise. I have no first hand opinion as I've only ever heard the 7 string versions of the pickups I have, but I have heard of people preferring 6 or 7 string versions of pickups. 7 string pickups have to be engineered differently to accommodate for the sound of the low end.

Try combining different sounds that appeal to you, keep these in mind and let yourself go, good improvisation comes from good theory knowledge and feel, don't buy books on how to improvise the best way to do it is to explore it yourself.

The 707 is based on the EMG 85, so it's a pretty fat sounding pickup, lower output than the 81 in the bridge, but definitely has it's charm, the 707 pickups in the Schecter Loomis I tried were the only EMG pickups I've enjoyed the sound of, which coming from me, a passive pickup evangelist is pretty high praise. My advice would be to just try out a 7 string with 707's in and see how they sound to you :v:
