What the hell beyond actives am I going to use? I'll honestly consider your answer, but I don't think you're going to have one beyond like SD Invaders and that's something I already looked into.
Let your pedal or amp boost your signal, not your pickups. If you have a nice crisp, bright sounding pair of pickups I guarantee that your distortion will come out nice and crunchy. Not to mention pinch harmonics are so much easier when your pickups aren't muddy like actives are. Wood makes a difference, too, but you can't exactly change that.
New Guitar Day! My new (used) Epiphone Goth Explorer. Built in '04 at a factory in Korea. I drove six hours round trip after a full shift at work to buy this thing off a guy on Craigslist for $175. Not the best deal ever, but cheaper than Ebay and the gas expense for the drive was less than shipping would have been on this beast. No bag or case, unfortunately. Damage is limited to a little chip on the backside of the large pointy end, much like every used Explorer you will ever see. The passive pickups are kinda muddy and lack appreciable levels of output, so the guitar is probably destined for a set of active EMGs. Pair of 81's, maybe? I'm not really a metalhead, I prefer hard rock with a lot of screaming highs and meaty riffs. Because I'm a huge Scorpions fan I've wanted a black Explorer ever since I started playing, and now I finally have one. Hell yes.
Looks pretty awesome, I think the explorer shape is cool, but it's a pain in the ass. Awesome deal though, congrats
I wouldn't take emg's even if they WERE free BUT that's my opinion. But also, you really just said passives sound wimpy? how.. the fuck?
You wouldn't take free pickups? lol, your loss I haven't had too much experience with passive vs actives but imo, more gain is better. well at least for the kind of stuff I like
passives and an overdrive pedal on the clean channel sound better than actives w/ distortion every time
I seriously think when I upgrade my guitar I'm just going to get some EMGs and rely on an effects station to vary sounds. oh, and pick the right amp of course.
I wouldn't take emg's even if they WERE free BUT that's my opinion. But also, you really just said passives sound wimpy? how.. the fuck?
I'd take EMGs over Lindy Fralins anytime!
Oh lawd, I can see the shitstorm on the horizon Passive VS Active WHICH IS BETRAR?! [editline]02:04PM[/editline] Also, what are jacksons like to play? I'd like to know
BareKnuckle
Just googled them. Fuck, why do you yooks have a 17% bullshit and cuntery tax for international orders? I'd actually consider the Trilogy or Sinner sets if they weren't going to cost me substantially more than an EMG SA set.
ITT: People saying active pickups suck with no reasoning.
Can you guys help me achieve a Josh Homme sound? I have a Fender Rumble 60 a Epiphone Les Paul Standard, A Big Muff Pi, Crybaby bass wah, and a ODB3 bass overdrive (I moved up from bass, so thats why I have all the bass equipment)
I liked the tone on Gilmour's Red Strat.. and it had actives.. Same goes for Knopfler's Pensa, which also had active pickups And Lifeson's Signature.. I can't strictly say actives/passives are better, they both got their pros and cons
It comes down to what kind of music you prefer, and what kind of tone you want. I like from post hardcore to death metal, so I would perferably have higher gain pickups, therefore, Humbuckers and actives But if you'd want something softer and cleaner, maybe 50's hotrod rock or Beatles you'd want a passive and SCs It's as easy as that, none is better than the other, one is just better suited for different kinds of music. Then again to completely assume that exactly the sound you want is going to stem from your PUP is wrong, and you're an idoit Now drop the subject please
Recommend me some semi-hard, preferably insutrumental guitar music. I've been playing Petruccis Glasgow kiss all the time lately and I'm in love. Anything similiar?
(I moved up from bass)
What? How can you "move up" from bass? The lead guitar and bass play two very different roles. How can one be better than another?
Not sure if this is what you're looking for but
What? How can you "move up" from bass? The lead guitar and bass play two very different roles. How can one be better than another?
One has 2 more strings. :eng101:
Question!! I have an AUX cable along with a guitar jack adapter for my amp(so that i can play with headphones on and only hearing it in the headphones) If i connect the AUX into my computers headphones or mic port and use Audacity will audacity record cleanly?(ofc depending on amp settings)
Why do people always turn to actives :/
Because everyone else they like uses them.

That way you don't have to run it through your sound card like direct recording. Audacity might give you a bit of trouble on the longer recordings, as it usually crashes for anything over a few minutes long. If you have anything else use that. If not don't worry about it.

Woah. Okay, you got me there. Bass players spend half their time tuning their instrument and the other half playing out of tune. Bass humor is fun.
The bassist can only be heard under two circumstances, if he plays solo, or if he stops playing
Buy some for me and relay 'em on the cheap, plox. Okay, I'll ask you for a laugh, then. I'm budgeting up a rhythm guitar for multiple applications, but primarily your general soundtrack symphonic rock and electronic shlock. What the hell beyond actives am I going to use? I'll honestly consider your answer, but I don't think you're going to have one beyond like SD Invaders and that's something I already looked into.
Bareknuckle Warpig, Painkiller, Nailbomb, Holy Diver, Rebel Yell or Miracle Man Lundgren M6 Haussell handwounds WCR Icebucker SD Custom Custom DiMarzio D Sonic, X2N, Super Distortion Sidewynder Death Adder There's lots, seeing as how you seem to think symphonic rock requires actives I though I'd give you a list of all the good stupid output pickups on the market. But hell if you think symphonic rock needs EMGs maybe you'd be happy with an Invader or a Dimebucker :v:

I am teaching myself, but I need some material to work with. I see what you mean, though, if I learn from an instructor off a DVD or something. I need some source of information though, perhaps some books about theory and scales? Any suggestions?
The bassist can only be heard under two circumstances, if he plays solo, or if he stops playing
More bands need bass like Motorhead. You can clearly hear it with the guitar playing next to it (at least in this song) I know it sometimes defeats the purpose of bass, but basslines sound better (IMO) with some biting treble and maybe a tad of overdrive.

I'm disappointed in you.
Looks pretty awesome, I think the explorer shape is cool, but it's a pain in the ass. Awesome deal though, congrats
It's as easy as any guitar to play sitting down or lying around on the sofa. Standing up, though, it nosedives like a bitch unless you've got your arm planted on the back end, and that wears out your neck in a hurry. I'm probably going to move the strap lug to somewhere around the back of the neck joint.
