I'll upload a picture. It was laying around so I thought: why not give it a try?
So I bought new strings for it, steel to be exact, and started playing some riffs. But bar chords kill me completely.

You shouldn't use steel strings on a nylon string acoustic, the neck isn't designed to take the extra tension. The steel could also cut into the nut and bridge.
Too late for that now. :v: I didn't buy it so if it breaks I wouldn't care much.
And you shouldn't put steel strings on one either, it'll bend the neck

And yeah, just practice, it's hard for everybody as a start
You might want to get yourself one of these as well, too train your fingers:

Well, I still got the old nylon strings, I guess I could switch them if it's that bad for the guitar.
You should

Just press down with the first finger as hard as you possibly can.
Like fucking unbelievably hard.
Like 10x harder than you think you need.
Then lay the other fingers on
Does anyone know what instrument this is in the beginning of the video?

You're a bad person.
Hmm looks weird. A full size electroacoustic with 4 strings?
Jazzbox meets baritone ukelele?
Four string tenor guitar?
Looks almost like a Bass Mandolin :v:
You're a bad person.
It's not that valuable, is it? I changed and tuned the strings so they're nylon again.
Also, it's a Samick SC-310. At least that's what it says.
Any of the things above are likely to be that instrument, it all comes down to how the thing is tuned really.
Looks almost like a Bass Mandolin :v:
the strings aren't doubled though
I'd definitely play a bass mandolin though
I'm overthinking myself to death again, but I'm entirely in foreign territory on a lot of this.
Want something I can play poppy schlock on, and something I can play acid jazz on. Does this need to be two guitars, or can I do that with one? What kind of pickup config (HSS) does it need? What model pickups? Wood? Electric acoustic? Acoustic electric? I don't even know why the hell those even exist, actually. I'm going entirely on what I know works for other people normally, but I don't know anybody who plays pop nor jazz (with an electric.)
I was all sure I was going to use this'ere strat clone for the poppy crap and swap the pickups, but it's apparently worth less than...well, a good date. And I kinda want an excuse to pitch it anyway because it's made in china and the body is particle board. Back to square 1, woo.

Stell strings will destroy the neck on that guitar. It doesn't have a truss rod and is made for nylon strings. I'd take them off before you have a neck like a question mark
[editline]02:17AM[/editline]
For pop rock and acid jazz I'd be tempted to go Les Paul, since the bridge humbucker will give you a typical pop/punk sound, while the neck pickup will be good for jazz.
If you want to push the boat out a bit try a Jazzmaster

You can get Mandobasses, they're absolutely enormous

Are we talking about the 490/498s, the 57s, the BurstBuckers, what? They seem to come with different pickups depending on whether it's a studio/standard/traditional/custom/whatever.

Oh hell no. I'd just as soon buy the man a smaller boat. Or a raft.
Fuck, I'm even considering Epiphones/ESP LTDs for this. I'm trying to smooth out my purchases over time, buying another $1-2k+ guitar now just makes me have to wait longer for the 7-string. At least an LP Studio I can get new/used for $800 or thereabouts.
What should I think of when I cover songs and upload them to YouTube? :d

There will always be someone saying you did "x" wrong, and that you suck and should die in a fire

That can totally be done with the same, as long as you are happy with the sound you get out of a guitar you can play anything with it
