[editline]6th February 2014[/editline] also check this fucking vertical grip [editline]6th February 2014[/editline] additionally on the other end of the spectrum, pentax is updating their 645d "medium format" camera http://photorumors.com/2014/02/05/new-pentax-645d-medium-format-camera-pictures-and-some-rumors/
That huge grip looks like it will block the flippy screen
That grip looks more like a docking station.
That huge grip looks like it will block the flippy screen
actually i dont think it does they also are offering a regular style vertical grip for people who dont need the hundreds of ports and card slots or w/e
That kind of grip is more for putting the camera on a rig or tripod and less hand holding like a DSLR
additionally on the other end of the spectrum, pentax is updating their 645d "medium format" camera http://photorumors.com/2014/02/05/new-pentax-645d-medium-format-camera-pictures-and-some-rumors/
Video capability on a medium format camera. Interesting.
Tomorrow I'll be shooting a wedding for my first time. I've been borrowing some equipment too, so I'll be bringing: - Canon EOS 5D Mark 3 - Canon EOS 6D - Hasselblad 500 EL/M (medium format film camera) - Zeiss 90mm f/2.8 for the hassy - Canon 50mm f/1.4 - Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 - Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 The idea is to have two cameras so that I don't need to keep switching lenses. The hasselblad is for doing some additional cool portraits.
So..... This just happened... http://www.eoshd.com/content/11934/panasonic-gh4-preview Pros and cons are provisional. Pros 4K from a nearly full pixel readout of the sensor, internal recording Uncompressed 10bit 4:2:2 1080p via HDMI 96fps slow-motion More than double the bitrate of the GH3 in 1080p with 200Mbit ALL-I and 100Mbit IPB 1036k pixel OLED screen and 2360k dot EVF Small form factor, lightweight Small price for the spec and accessible to broad range of artists and filmmakers, from consumers up to pros Choice of broadcast safe luma ranges or full range (0-255) XLR and HD-SDI (via external add-on) PL mount lens compatible (i.e. with Hot Rod Cameras adapter) Uncompressed 10bit 4K and 2K via external add-on Efficient H.264 compression of 4K compared to Canon 1D C MJPEG Reduced rolling shutter (50ms sensor readout compared to 100ms on GH3) Improved dynamic range Improved low light performance PAL / NTSC switchable (“world cam”) Zebras and focus peaking Time Code Synchro Scan Cinema-gamma mode Articulated screen Full manual audio control Convenient Quicktime MOV file format 1080/60p Very fast AF for stills (0.07 sec) Improved AF in low light New mechanical shutter with longer lifespan and 1/8000 Very fast 40fps burst mode Silent electronic shutter at full resolution and in raw Timelapse and stop-motion animation modes Gradation curve (for in-camera adjustment of shadow and highlights) Responsive (quad core CPU based) Very good quality stills for a cinema camera (HAHA) Wireless control over WiFI Near Field Comms Weather sealed, even splash proof Extensive lens range Metabones Speed Booster compatible Cons 4K video mode crops field of view compared to full sensor and 1080p mode Internal codec 8bit 4:2:0 from 4:2:2 source (why not 4:2:2 all the way?) Ergonomic design of external add-on “DMW-YAGHE” could be better External DMW-YAGHE has to attach to base of camera, cannot be more conveniently placed on your rig External DMW-YAGHE has a silly name No full sized HDMI connector on the camera itself No 4:3 mode for anamorphic lenses (BOOOO!) No internal ND filter solution (yet) Pre-production model does not have LOG picture profile Body design too similar to GH3 with existing ergonomic issues not addressed Please note the pros and cons are based on my experience with the pre-production model and not on any extended shoot with the final camera – the proper review (and footage) is still to come.
Video capability on a medium format camera. Interesting.
iirc the pentax 645d isnt actually a medium format its like only 30% or so larger than a full frame, so its like the APS-c version of a medium format if that makes sense. still cool either way since it costs like only $10k which is fantastic for a "medium format" digital.
The 645D update is rumoured to have video, yes please.
digital MF is like DSLRs but slower. theres only like 10 richbois in tha whole world that would ever want this, so no company does it (but my uncle mops the floor at canon and they have white/red ring medium format lenses in development) FIRST (right now 2013): u get the darn thing but its a [del]crop[/del] crap, then you get video, then you get 'fullframe' (REAL!? 6x7) and then fullframe...... (drum roll) 6x7 VIDEO holding my fists of money for the day that happens. speculativekindaguy: over and out-------
Digital backs for medium format cameras have been around for a long time.
too long if u ask me
Gh4 will be my next camera. I couldn't have been more impressed with the power my G6 had for 800 dollars and using it for actual professional work.
Wish it was GX1 sized. If you're going for a camera that big you may as well get a sensor bigger than four thirds.
I hope more companies start releasing slow no capable cameras, if they can do 1080/60 they should do 720/120 and VGA at 240 like the Gopro can for the past year or two

Mirrorless 645 (a real 67 sensor probably won't come for much time) with a short enough flange to use any MF lens via adapters, huge touchscreen LCD for fine tuning AF, focus peaking, and then Z shift sensor for auto focusing with any lenses (though the adjustments would have to be major for MF stuff). Sony just needs to increase their market share, but they've got the tech that MF cameras really need ~*sonylover63signsoff*~

So I'm thinking about getting into Medium Format territory. Would the Bronica ETR-S be a good first choice?
I have a question, this picture; How did they achieve the glow, so it's not too overpowering, but it still creates a relatively nice effect? I've been interested in night time photography, but that effect is what I look for most. Is there a certain way for a camera to do it, can it be done with a single shot, or does it require a video? Is it some sort of post processing?
i think in that image the glow is mostly due to light fog apart from that it depends on the lens; you could as well approximate it in post processing by (for example) making a new layer over the rest of the image that just has the highlights and applying a bit of gauss blur to it

Terminator, when they're driving through the streets, the lights glowed and gave it a really snazzy effect. Now, I know it wouldn't be the most positive received photography. I guess you can just call it my personal liking? Iunno.
could achieve that with a lens; in fact, i have one that does that when you have bright lights in the frame, even if the light sources are in focus, like so afaik this is fairly common with older film lenses (the one used for all those shots is an olympus OM 50mm f/1.4, it's probably from the late seventies or thereabouts)
That's actually really nice looking, and relative to the effect I was looking for. How much would that cost, and is it film only? I don't exactly want to go through the process of a red room and film, and that lot. Never mind, looked it up. Film. It does look nice, and the camera is fairly cheap. Although I imagine the film is harder to find that anything.
the one i have would probably be $60 or something, you could find cheaper ones as well film lenses can be used on a DLSR with an adaptor (it just depends on what lens mount your DSLR uses and what the lens uses, some physically don't work together because of distances unless you use expensive adaptors with optics in them) the only two problems i can see is that, this lens doesn't seem to have the same amount of blurry glow on a DSLR for some reason, and the look of the glow is entirely dependent on the lens, so you'd really want to be able to actually try them on your camera before deciding anything [editline]8th February 2014[/editline] oh and just a wee note about film: a darkroom is only needed if you're printing on photo paper, pretty much everybody in this section who shoots film gets it developed then gets the negatives scanned (either with their own scanner or by the lab developing the film)

I don't know many people near by, and .. Definitely not any stores I know of around here that'd be willing to let me try a older lens adapted to a DSLR body. I got to get off to bed, so I apologize for the abrupt ending in conversation. I hope I can respond in the morning, if you choose to do so!
well, in that case you could try having a look at lenses on ebay, then just googling them to see if you can find any other people's photos taken with them (if you were thinking of buying them you'd probably want to look them up anyway) i'd say have a look at primes, maybe some cheap 28mm f/2.8 ones
FYI the D3xxx/D5xxx don't meter with non-CPU lenses which is pretty fucking dumb, so you have to guess and check exposure. Also, you don't need an adapter if you are just using anything AI or later. The H Auto stuff will probably break your mount so make sure to avoid that. If you need help on how to tell if a lens is AI/AI-S if it doesn't say in the title there are some guides online to it. [editline]8th February 2014[/editline] Series E lenses are butt cheap.
I am pretty sure the glow just happens from fast glass. A Nikon E 50mm 1.8 would give that look I'm pretty sure.
