Gear discussion thread v. "I got some new gear and I got to post it here"

I recently got interested in photography and started playing around with my parents' camera (Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7)

It's okay, but it doesn't shoot the most amazing pictures in the world. It helped me learn the basics of photography though - plus all the technical jargon.
I was digging around in their attic the other day and found a Zenit-E! Surprisingly (or not), it still works, even though it was made in the 70s:

I bought my first film, read a detailed guide and started taking photographs. I still have about 18 photos before the reel ends and I can't wait to get it developed. It has the Helios 44mm lens, which is apparently quite good for a start (not that I would know). Any hints, tips or just general advice about the Zenit or photography in general? I don't want to be a pretentious, artsy douche, I just want to have fun taking pictures, but I'm not really sure where to begin - as with any hobby. Any threads I might want to check out? To be dead honest, I'm kind of anxious about posting any pictures in this sub-forum, because I'm not even sure what people would enjoy and what would be "just another guy with an old camera". Also, is starting with analogue photography a good idea or a really bad one?
okay, canon 40mm f/2.8 pancake = amazing; it's like another 50 except a tiny (honestly tiny) bit more expensive and stupidly sharp wide open (oh and also basically murders any flare)
and it's tiny
take note, 6d (and other canon full frame) pals
Shorty forty.
take pictures of things u find interesting ,
then make pictures of things u find interesting, interesting for someone else looking at them
everyone goes through banal pictures like "just another guy with an old camera", the fastest way to go through that is:: look at other peoples pictures, see what draws u to them
see how they use light and form, see how they spot stuff nobody else would see, see how they find the world interesting and communicate it to u through their photos

(and post them here)

2 add to this thing:
drown yourself in the work that inspires u thread(s)
consume more art than just photography, see how subjects, form and composition is used over all to communicate a thing to the viewer
there is a 3rd version rumored with a 24-70mm f1.8-2.8 lens
Any timeframe for that? Like, soon™ or for Photokina in September?

Rumored announcement is in May, would probably come out later this year
darn I wish I was in NYC yesterday and today
J&R went bust and they are auctioning off their entire inventory, and they had a lot of shit
im sure there are people snagging multi thousand dollar lenses and cameras for a fraction of what they retail for
also i think im gonna list my 24mm 2.8d on ebay and try to get the tamron 17-50 non-vr before june 6th assuming im going to be using it at wedding
check craigslist, people might be reselling for less-than-RRP prices :)
The RX100m3 specs got leaked! The lens is now a 24-70mm 1.8-2.8 and it has a popup viewfinder! Also records video in XAVC-S now which is pretty awesome. Personally I won't upgrade (the original is much smaller and goes to 100mm which I use a lot) but I like seeing Sony push out new exciting things. Price is said to be about $900 which is also steep.

that looks great but i don't think i'll ever be able to give up an ovf
both the mamiya and my canon 6d were mistreated by random people on set today and nobody will own up
my 6d has a huge scratch on the prism from where someone let it roll/fall onto the group (idk what, i found it upside down and i was not happy) and i went to get the medium format camera i'm using and the back was lying fucking open (i was halfway through a roll of film). nobody would say they did it and i'm really pissed off people will just let gear fly about without care or attention.
i appreciate i'm slightly liable for leaving my camera unattended, but it was clearly visible, not lying on the ground and they can leave a £40,000 set of lenses kicking about without them getting fucking damaged. ugh.
If someone on a film set is brazen enough to open up a Mamiya without having the common sense not to, they are a liability to the entire production and shouldn't be anywhere near any equipment in any professional setting ever.
it's fun carrying flight cases worth more than your house though
That fucking sucks man, especially since no one will own up. Anyone who is working in a professional capacity around equipment like that should know the value of things and you would expect to be able to trust people with kit. Hope you find out who did it man, would just be piece of mind.
bought this

If you've got a 99 cents only store near you, they carry "Memories" brand film. It's really just rebranded Fuji Superia film. Not the best, but it works, and it's only $1

I thought the prism was internal?
I thought the prism was internal?
i mean like the top of the camera, where the prism is
i mean like the top of the camera, where the prism is
I thought you meant the internal prism was scratched, so when you look through the viewfinder you see a giant scratch.
thats physically not possible without seriously fucking the camera up
sorry for confusion
I thought when you said it was face down that the camera had no lens on it and something went inside and scratched the prism from inside the lens mount void area thing.
The camera only sustained a flesh wound, I think the issue is more that it could have been a lot worse and that people should be eternally more careful when working on a set with kit like that around.
^ people shouldn't touch other people their stuff without permission, that's just childish behaviour which seems inappropriate on a set with expensive gear to me
whats a fair price for my 24mm f/2.8d? I only have had it since like february or something so I didn't use it much (i got it used in the first place). I paid $240 for it with the UV filter but I think I could get a decent bit more out of it. realistically the UV filter shouldnt raise the value much but its a pretty nice filter (hoya super hmc (0) or whatever) and ebay people care about stuff like that
also if it was enough to afford a tamron 17-50 non VC that would be very helpful

just kidding ebay people are fucking idiots and pay $290 for a used lens that costs $290 new at digirev
so just get the price as close to $290 as possible
I might buy a Nikon D3200 VR with a AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens in like,a year for my first DSLR. (€415) Really want to get into photography but i'm using a bridge camera right now. It's actually pretty nice and cheap (€150) but I reaaally want to get a DSLR. Yes,I know,''it's in a year you fuckhead why are you thinking about it now'' but still.
Is the camera and the lens any good? Don't know much about lenses but it comes with the camera for cheap so I don't think it's an exceptional super amazing lens.
just look what the market has to offer with your budget by then.
the lens that comes w/ the camera will be perfectly fine especially if you're just starting off photography
doesn't really make sense thinking about what you're going to buy because new things come out all the time and more importantly less new things become cheaper on the used market
There's a Canon 350D body with some SD cards (used) here for €80 but I don't have any money aaaaaaa
if I get a job this summer (which I probably will), and i decide to spend the money on something photography related should I get an x100s or like a 70-200 2.8?
im leaning more to the x100s because the whole thing that is slowing down my photography is having a big scary camera
sell your big scary camera
