Well they were not for portfolio or for any specific purpose, apart from testing different AF methods with the camera I had for only 1 day. So do not expect miracles, I put at the start it was for testing, best source at 5.30 in the morning in a sleepy village, is speedy ass birds.

Go walk around with one of these for a few days.

this one is nice though i think
Doesn't frame blend to smooth out the motion, wouldn't buy.
Needed some extra counterweight and improvised.

Empty beer bottles 0/10 not enough weight
They're actually just enough to bring the center of gravity down
Nice beer themed rig.
You should bring it to oktoberfest.
So I finally found WHY everyone wants so much fucking money ($200+) for the Nikon SA-21. I mean, if you bought a Nikon film scanner in the last ten years it came with one so they are "common as hell". If you don't have one you' will regret not owning one.
Turns out that with the bridging of ONE jumper the SA-21 six photo negatives adapter becomes the $600 Nikon SA-30 full roll negatives adapter.

Try and find an Olympus XZ-1 (or ZX-1?). 1.8 at wide and 2.4 at the long end, they go for decent prices.
I'm pretty set on dropping some $ on a Contax G series camera. The G1 looks good enough, anyone here with experience/knowledge of the cameras got any opinions/advice? Is the G2 worth it?
G2 is for shooting the 35mm, 21mm and 16mm lenses (the zoom too but I wouldn't get that) aside from other improvements. From what I've read the G2 is what the G1 should have been in the first place.
And get the 45mm f2, it's supposed to be one of the best lenses out there
What's the best camera to get to fuck around with?
Looking at 1Dx mostly because my dad has every L lens for when he goes on vacations with his 5d2.
I'm getting $50,000 for graduation, so honestly I could go with any brand and buy all the top lenses.
I don't want to tap into inheritance to go digital medium format.

Don't be a dick dude, I'm new to this and have no idea sorry. I'm just trying to learn. I mostly want to know how you guys all get that wide angle shallow depth of field.

Stop rating me funny and atleast tell me what I'm doing wrong. It was a simple question.
Realistically I'd tell you to dump that cash on to a sparkling new RZ67 II with a 65 f/4 and 110 2.8. Learn how to use it and play with your dad's gear for a bit, it will help you determine what you want.
If you want to blow stacks right off the bat and get that wide angle shallow look, grab a 1dx and grab a 24 1.4 + 35 1.4
I still think it's in your best interest to have some discipline and learn the ropes for a few months. You can do ALOT with that money if you play your cards right and know how and why it works.
I looked at the RZ, the digital backs for it are too small and it would be a clunky set up. I could try shooting film, but I honestly can't be assed. I live in Los Feliz which isn't too far from CalArts - we could meet up if you'd like. I'm in Cairo for a bit right now, but when I'm back I'll hit you up.
A bit weird that you know so much about us, you must have been lurking for awhile?
But yeah, that actually doesn't sound like too bad of an idea. I have a 1DX and all the fast L primes, I also have an RZ67 with the lenses I mentioned earlier. I have friends in Los Feliz actually.

i agree with this completely. discipline first, gear second. it's the photographer, not the camera.
ya dig, cuh?
anyhow, gear wise, what exactly would you need a 1Dx for? if you're into the shallow depth of field/wide angle stuff, you could just buy:
24 1.4 + 35 1.4
, and a full-frame body that isn't a 1Dx. i mean, all of that extra money for a camera body that you probably aren't even going to use the fullest potential of. go with a used 5d, 5d mk ii, 1ds mk ii/iii, etc.
Lightroom 5's available now, from what I heard about the beta its got some cool new features

um well buy a m9 and spend the rest of your money on travelling the world (because location and subject are way more important than whatever piece of soon to be outdated junk is in your hand)
[editline]10th June 2013[/editline]
anyway, if you want to blow money like that you're better off buying a large format camera and a hundred rolls of aerochrome

I'm sorry
but you are getting $50,000 for graduating?
I'd be happy if my parents bought a pie to celebrate me graduating.

Don't even know what the means mane, but I did consider the Leica. I might go that route. I did some research and basically according to you guys I want a fullframe with a 35 1.4. Should work out nicely. I'll put the rest away until I want something better.

The graduation money is meant to be recklessly spent on 'toys'. My parents will pay for any travels I want to do.

Why are you sorry? We come from different economic classes. I didn't choose my situation, and you didn't choose yours. Honestly I'm glad you're happy with where you are. A lot of people I know from all classes just want more and more and are bitter/jealous toward those that are at a higher level. My idiot brother just keeps draining our family's money on cars and whines about not getting a house close enough to the beach because his friends have more than we do.

Truest of trues, you have my respect and an apology - sorry for the hostility before. Before I give my two cents on your camera direction, may I ask whether you are looking to take up photography in the long term or just want to give it a go and have a good camera for taking snaps on your vacations?
Rather, it sounds like your idiot family keeps giving your brother money for cars.

Kinda pisses me off when people flaunt daddy's money.

I studied art history and I got hooked on 20th century photographic movements. I just want to explore some of the ideas.

He's been married twice, each wedding costing well into the millions. He always goes for lower-class girls so we end up footing the bill for extravagant weddings and then he divorces when he finds out they weren't the right match.
Also I'm sorry if my posts are considered 'flaunting daddy's money', I'm just being honest with you all. My apologies for the naivety. "Silver spoon" is literally all I've known.
I had the silver spoon too (not any more since I went independent) but I don't take literally every excuse to flaunt it. Nobody cares about bad weddings.
If strings of text on an internet forum are considered flaunting money, I'm afraid I've come to the wrong place.
Moving on, thank you for the advice guys. I'm off to do some research and figure out what's right for me. Hopefully I'm still welcome to ask questions here, as I might need your advice here in the future.

Like any art, creativity flourishes in limitation. I would advise you back away from your initial instincts and buy a setup that is not necessarily cheap, but will limit you enough to put some creative thought into your photos rather than technical thought. For sheer portability with excellent quality, I would definitely recommend the Leica M with a 50mm f/1.4 and a 35mm f/1.4. It gives you flexibility without too much legroom. Alternative lens combo - 50mm and a 28mm, the 28mm will be great for landscapes.
