So, I have a few spare computers that would work fine for editing (Phenom X4 955, SLI 8800, 4gb of ram). I am thinking about selling my Main computer which is (water-cooled, i7, 5850+5870 Cfx, 4gb of ram, SSD raid, 1tb, blahblahblah) and picking up a Canon 17-40mm F/4L.
My current setup camera-wise is a
- T3i
- 50mm f/1.8 I (Metal base, full focus ring, distance-viewer, and big AF/MF switch)
- 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5 Macro (from 1987)
I do not like using tele-photos, as they are not really my style. Do you guys think the 17-40 would compliment my setup, or not? I really need the wide angle for Automotive-esque shots, and the 40mm end would fall perfectly for what I need for portraits IMO. Any advice? I can show some of my work on here to get a better feel for what YOU think I might need?
The 17-40 4L is a great versatile lens if you can live with the small aperture. It's one of the best values out there. I would go for it.
The aperture doesn't bother me a bit, because 99% of the time, Im working in bright situations, or using flash. The only time I work at night is when I am doing Car shoots at night, but they are also done long-exposure anyway.
IMO that's more of a FF wide angle lens than a normal zoom for APS-C. i think the tamron 17-50mm 2.8 would be much cheaper and probably a better performer on crop for the most part.
if you are mostly using the wider end, then go for the canon 15-85mm, it's supposed to be a great lens with a better range, very good wide open performance, and IS.
here are some links discussing your options:

Should I upgrade my camera?
I have a Nikon d3100, and its alright, but I recently acquired a large sum of money, and was thinking of stepping it up a notch, something with a much broader iso range, and a mic port.
Is it worth it? If so, what is the best next step?

Go full frame or go home, a D3100 is a terrific camera.

i heard there's problems with the d600, have they fixed the oily sensor problem?
I ordered a Lomography Konstruktor on Friday, super excited for it to come in. I think I'm going to paint the lens plastic something different than the main black body

Also found this while moving. Still in perfect condition, barely been used. I have to open it up and service it a bit as it makes a ton of (bad) noise currently but the case doesn't have a single scratch.

Just loaded my first ever roll of Ektar, crazy excited :)

I don't think so, they seem to be ignoring it as a problem

my canon sureshot died on the Matterhorn in Disneyland on thursday with four shots left in the camera. It must be something with the power, because even after I changed the batteries, the mechanical lens cover wouldn't even close, and the film won't advance.
Got a shipment of 10x Portra 400 and 5x Fuji Pro 400H, interested to see how well I can do changing from Ektar back to these films. Gotta keep things fresh!

Nothing really changes besides you getting 2 stops more. Portra (160) is my favorite film.
Ordered a Smena-8m at the beginning of may and it arrived in the post today
Cant wait to give it a go.

Anyone with experience with Lomography.com? I ordered the Konstruktor on Friday, was given shipping confirmation that it would ship Monday and arrive today but FedEx hasn't even received it yet 5 days later. Not too amused.
Thinking of picking up one of few remaining Nikon D5100s. Anyone here own or have any experience with it?

What are you upgrading from?
Old D3000. It was my first DSLR.

I bought my lc-a+ from them with no problem. Might have gotten a bit lost in the mail. I've had stuff shipped from las vegas to LA then to oakland (where its suppose to go). Is there no tracking number?

Don't do it, your D3000 is just as good for photo taking.
The main reason I'm considering it is because of low light performance. The D3000 has awful low light even at higher ISO, plus my sister wanted to buy it off me.

save a bit more, sell to your sister and get a d7000 or a d300 or basically something a lot better. the jump to a d5100 isn't as much of a jump as you should do.

You know, I never really looked up the d7000, always just looked up the d7100 instead, but DAMN, the d7000 has what I need, a f-mount, a mic port, and a great price. I think I found my upgrade.

If you're not opposed to refurb, this is a killer price.
