Anyone interested or know anyone interested in buying a Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 Nikon fit? I'm selling mine. I'm wanting to change to something more normal zoom, like a Nikon 16-85mm or 18-70mm. Anyone have any recommendations?
Upgrading from a wide I feel like the 16-85mm would suit you better, the difference of 16 and 18 is something I notice indoors. If you want something that's a little more lowlight capable consider the tamron 17-50mm f2.8. They are really cheap (~$340) and great wide open performers. If you want more reach then I would go with the Nikon as its got better range on both ends. I believe the Nikon 18-70 was nikons original kit lens before the 18-55mm lens, so it won't be the best performer, but it's got a good range and aperture speed to it. From what I've read just now I think most nikon aps-c shooters like the Nikon 18-200mm for price/performance, none of their other zooms perform much better than if and it has the range advantage over everything. Just something to consider (apparently it puts the 18-135 and 18-105 out of the running because of being equal or better performing for not much more so you've got those two canned).

Is this true, or am I thinking of another lens? Also, the 18-70 was a kit lens, but for some reason has really great optics as well as fast and quiet focusing, along with a metal mount :v:. I wish they kept the quality up.
I know it's recommended highly on dyxum (for Sony cams), the XR Di II LD Aspherical. I would opt for the one with VC on Nikon mount. Not sure about the optical differences between them to be honest :/ And if the 18-70 is good I would go with that, Rockwell recommended against it and he is generally decent for Nikon reviews, but if you have evidence showing otherwise I wouldn't doubt it's a good lens. It the aperture, focal range, and build quality of it are really appealing.
Quick question for you guys seeing as you all are very knowledgeable with lenses, I am looking to get a dirt cheap, just for playing around fisheye lens so I can take some wide angle shots. I've found this deal on Newegg and it fits my budget of "Not a >$100 lens" because I am nowhere near ready to reap the benefits of a pro lens, and it comes with a simple mini shotgun microphone, which seems really handy. $70 seems really cheap for a lens and microphone, so I fully expect to get a cheap lens and microphone. I just don't want to completely waste my money if there's anything you guys know and I don't, i.e. if it won't fit my Nikon D3200. [editline]19th March 2013[/editline] Also, for the sake of contributing to the thread, here's my gear. From right to left, there is my very first "HD" camcorder (got it when I was 12, is a massive piece of crap but was only $50 and was amazing for me at the time), my first decent camcorder which I now use as a backup, and my shiny Nikon D3200, my first (and only) DSLR. I love it.
Get a fisheye adapter that fits the thread on the end of your D3200's kit lens, it's what I did on my Lumix G2 and it works a treat!
Canon just quoted $1300 to repair my under warranty 5Dmk3, because there is 'corrosion damage'. Even though it wasn't submerged at all, only had some rain on it, and when I took it to Ted's there was zero sign of any corrosion damage on any of the contacts. Me sad :C

Shouldn't it be free under warranty?
Isn't it weather sealed?
You probably have to use weather sealed lenses though too. I would still call up canon and bother them about it until they just repair it free.
What the fuck. Shouldn't it be free under warranty?
Only if its a manufacturing defect or something that's Canon's fault iirc. Plus I've never heard anything good about Canons warranty service, you pretty much have to pay for everything regardless of warranty

And $1300 is way too high imo.
MY RX-100 IS HERE! I'm so excited about this camera, I'm taking it to Colorado tomorrow so expect pictures from it soon, this little thing packs a punch

I'm going to order a grip for it so ergonomics are a bit better, but it really is a solid piece. I'll try my best to bring some good shots back, only bringing it and not my other cameras so I can put it through the paces
So, I have 10 cameras and I really only use one. I need to get rid of a few to help pay for a car/parts/insurance/etc. I purchased the Pentax to "Upgrade" from my Yashica, but I absolutely loooooooooooove my Yashica and found myself reaching for it rather than the 654 when I went out. The SX-70 was a total impulse buy and I've only used it a few times. Anyone in the US interested in: Pentax 645 with 75mm F/2.8 - $450 (Shutter is accurate. Body is near mint. Lens is clear and focus is smooth as silk. There are a few marks in the viewfinder but they aren't distracting at all.) Polaroid SX-70 - $350 (One of Photojojo's & Mint's "Limited Edition" restored SX-70s. Glass is clean, Shutter and meter is accurate, Rollers are clean, Focus is smooth, and it has brand new leather. Nothing wrong with it at all. Restored to almost the same condition it left the factory.) If nobody is interested, I'll toss em' up on Ebay. I just figured I'd give you folks first pickings :)
What the fuck. Shouldn't it be free under warranty?
Warranty specifically does not cover corrosion damage due to water, I'd never taken it to the beach, certainly not near the water, except for the weekend that it broke. I called them up, they sent pictures to Ted's, I drove to Ted's, the pictures look like the thing has been microwaved, half the welds have split or come right off, there is a bunch of green stuff on the pcb board of the mirror box.. and every other pcb. I'm convinced that there is a manufacturing defect with the weather sealing, I've taken so much care with it. I of course can't prove this, I have almost every picture I've ever taken, but just not having one means they can go 'oh that one you must have taken while submerged in acid'. The mk3 hasn't been around long enough for there to be experiences with this kind of damage, other people with this kind of manufacturing fault. So it's entirely possible, but pretty much impossible to prove that there was a problem with the weather sealing. OR a little bit of water got in there from the rain, and sitting in Canon's warehouse for a month caused it to eat out the rest of the camera. But again, nothing I can do to prove it. Ted's basically can't help me, Canon keeps saying talk to them. I've offered to pay the $500 labour fee if they do the parts free, that still just sucks but if they say yes I'll probably take it. And I've just found out that my insurance also doesn't cover this kind of damage, so I'm just like :'( Another guy had a problem with the mk2, he was able to somehow prove it was a manufacturing fault, I don't know how I'm going to be able to do that. It took him two months of research and pages and pages of other peoples cases. I'm doing a full time, accelerated film and television uni degree (like 8 weeks of holiday a year), I have practically zero free time between trying to make money as a photographer and study.. What I've learnt from all this is that the 5D series (and likely all models that are not 1D's) are for all intents and purposes not weather sealed whatsoever. Treat your camera's like babies who are allergic to water in the rain, keep a 5c plastic bag in your pocket at all times. Although this wouldn't have helped me, my problem is obviously long term exposure, it all helps I guess.
Sorry to hear that, incredibly shitty situation :/
~$500 is a lot more reasonable for a 'service' job, but still fuck them. It's not like it's a $200 Rebel from 2003. You bought their second most expensive camera currently available, they should respect you as a customer. [editline]22nd March 2013[/editline] How old are you // are you still with your parents? A 'grown man' with an audible hint of litigation on his mind should do wonders.

I've had my 5D2 for ~3 years and it's been dragged to hell and back, all it's got is cosmetic wear and some sticky buttons (Though I haven't taken a look inside). Oh and the USB socket broke after like a week of owning it. [editline]22nd March 2013[/editline] Also, gearorama:

A 'grown man' with an audible hint of litigation on his mind should do wonders.
I'm 18, living in Queensland, a few hours flight and a state away from any family, I'm in residence at uni and pretty independent. They have me legally, a lawyer would cost more than buying a new camera outright. It's got corrosion damage -> the warranty doesn't cover corrosion damage. I'm convinced that it's a manufacturing fault that means it doesn't have the proper weather sealing, but I can't prove it. I asked them to send me pictures. It looks like it's been microwaved then stored in a cess pit for several months. They weren't very helpful, they just said that they forwarded the pictures to Ted's and I should go see them. They don't seem to want to talk to me! [thumb]http://puu.sh/2lTu5[/thumb] [thumb]http://puu.sh/2lTup[/thumb] There's no way in hell that was caused by one day at the beach. I'm sure it's a manufacturing fault in the sealing, and I'm sure that it staying in a box at Canon's warehouse for the past month had given it time to get worse. And I'm not sure if the drop shadows on the text and lines was necessary by Canon. For anyone wondering they quoted $469 labour, $736 parts, $121 tax, $13 freight. They'd replace the mirror box assembly with the autofocus sensor, $400, The top and back cover assemblies with pcbs, $180 top and $150 back. It's $50 to refuse their quote. I have 30 days to accept or refuse it. I've actually heard pretty much nothing but good stuff about Canon's service, I've heard two stories of people literally dropping cameras, admitting to them being dropped, and then getting replacements free, under warranty. After some research, apparently I'm 'lucky' they'll repair the camera at all, since corrosion damage usually comes back. I don't really understand why they sent this to me however: [thumb]http://puu.sh/2lWEK[/thumb] Anyway, someone gave me a really, really left field idea: When I finish uni, I was considering the idea of doing photography as my bread and butter income as I worked my way into the film or television industry, a lecturer told the whole class last week that there is practically no chance that any of us will get a job, and that our degree is useless. (It's our graduation films and the technical skills we learn which are worth it) Since I don't want to do engineering anymore, I figure photography is as just a good a career as any. I'm going to complete this degree, I'm going to give it my very best shot, but photography has always been something I could come back to and enjoy no matter the circumstances. I've also never really been one to 'get a job', I've always 'made a job', so I think I have a reasonable chance at film and tv, but again, photography is my greatest hobby that could also become a career. So I figured at the end of these two years I would buy a 1D series body. So I've been saving up for quite a while. And if I start not having that cup of coffee in the morning, start riding my bike more instead of using petrol, take more studio 2000 style portraits and sell them to the people that seemingly have unlimited money to spend, I might be able to make ends meet without sacrificing too much food. So I figure I could try to get a trade in kind of thing going, get a grand or maybe more off a 1D series body. I know at this stage the first thing you want to do is throw a dumb rating at my face but, it's an option, I could turn this into an opportunity to get a cheap(er) 1D. In Queensland it's been > 60% humidity for the past 10 weeks that I've been here, there were a few weeks of literally constant rains, floods, etc, with maybe two weeks of sunshine splattered in there. This is the past 72 hours. On Canon's website, both the 1Dx and the 5D3 have "Working Humidity Range: 85% or less" on there. So I'm living in a relatively harsh environment, I don't see why the 5D3 can't hold up against it, but one of my photography friends' stopped working a few days ago as well, he bought it grey market so if it's a similar issue he will probably have an even harder time. He bought it a few weeks ago, so it might be just a grey market derived problem. Everything I've read on the internet, where someone is complaining about a broken 5D series body, suggests that if I really need weather sealing, I should buy a 1D series body. I'm certain that I'm going to do photography for the rest of my life, my photography lecturer has nothing but good things to say about the 1D series, she'd been in the business for some 15 odd years before she came to this uni to do her PhD. I've always told people that you shouldn't buy new gear unless you truly feel limited by the stuff that you have, I want to feel comfortable taking my camera outside given that it can turn from sunny to raining with barely any notice. When you're at springbook national park, an hours hike away from the car, the plastic bag idea doesn't really cut it. I was there a few days ago, near the 'best of all' lookout and it was so misty and foggy that my raincoat was dripping without it actually raining, but I wish I'd had a camera with me, and if I'm going to go down this road in the long run, I want my camera to be able to come with me camping or snowboarding. Jaanus, bopie, is this a course of action I should consider? If Canon won't do a trade in I could probably pay the stupid fee and find someone to buy it off me for a couple thousand then buy a 1D. Or I could just pay the stupid fee and deal with it. Or I could keep fighting as my uni work suffers from the added stress, and possibly get it waived.
I never buy new gear unless I've earned the money for it with my old gear. I started out with a 350D Do you really need a 1D? I'd prefer a 5D3 over any 1D (except for 1D X)
I never buy new gear unless I've earned the money for it with my old gear. I started out with a 350D Do you really need a 1D? I'd prefer a 5D3 over any 1D (except for 1D X)
I don't think I need a 1D.. I was perfectly comfortable with the 5D3. But in 8 months over 51,000 clicks on that 5D3, I've shot in snow for about 10 days, I've been on sand at the beach with it twice, and then the third time when it broke, and in more than a light rain perhaps four times, one of those times being at the beach, just before it broke. If I ever have to make the decision between something that will last and something that is cheaper, I'll find a way to get the thing that will last. So the vast majority of the shooting I've done has been in and around Adelaide or Perth, in mild weather, but coming up to Queensland almost all the shooting I've been able to do has been in relatively inclement weather. How much rain should a 5D3 be able to handle? If I've ever planned to shoot in the rain I've stuck it in a plastic bag, I've been caught out a couple of times, but that's what the weather sealing is for! I'm just as happy shooting film on my $30 rebel canon as I am on a 5D3 though, but I have to drive an hour up to Brisbane to get them to develop it, you can't trust people to do it locally, it's a hassle. Given that I've just uprooted from home I don't have the gear to develop anything myself, and I don't even know if I would be able to given that I live in residence. I shot mostly film last year, and it taught me so much. My digital style replicates my film style now. I feel as though it's becoming harder and harder to shoot film however. I never took the plunge into medium format film, maybe that's something I should do before it's too late. I have a backup 550D that I'm borrowing, but when I look at the pictures from it I cringe, because in my head I know what they should look like, but they don't, they don't have the feeling that they should. I get the feeling with most of the film I shoot, and with most of the work with the 5d3, but not with the 550D. I started with a 550D and used it for a couple of years, but now :\ I don't know if that's psychological or if it's the fault of the camera or if it's psychological so I don't use the camera to it's full extent. (when people ask me that question I tell them it's the third option, so it's probably the third option for me too) I went out last weekend with some friends to take photos, I just had my 50mm in my pocket with my 70-200 on the film camera, and a couple rolls of film. We drive out into the middle of nowhere for a couple of hours and I walk away from the group and find this lake with a couple boats on it: [thumb]https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/72322_3893558515827_539717273_n.jpg[/thumb] (One of the friends took that on his mk3, SOOC) I knew the shot I wanted to take in my head, but the 550D didn't replicate it, I don't have a scanner and the film isn't back yet, hopefully the ones I took with that are. (I had infrared film in the camera at the time, so it'll probably turn out at least, interesting) I just want a camera that I can rely on to take the pictures I see in my head really. If I try to do a tradein, I'll likely have to get a 1Dx. I don't feel as though a 1Dx would be wasted on me, it will be put to good use, it'll be used for years and years, but I won't be shooting it at 12 fps. Being able to take it camping with me will just be fantastic, to not have to worry about it will be fantastic. But holy shit it's so much money. I think I should make a decision based on what's best for me as a photographer, then separately as an issue of money, then figure out how to achieve the first part despite the second part. That's how I've approached life generally and it's worked out pretty well so far.
Alright so, about a year ago I got a T2i with the intents of taking photos and video. (Starting from zero camera knowledge.) Found out DLSR video is too big a pain in the ass for me, but I ended up loving photography. I want to upgrade* to a FF body, and Ive already invested in Canon. (Currently have the 50 1.8 cheapie and the old ass 20-35mm 2.8L which is an awkward zoom range on this thing.) BASICALLY, is the 5D classic worth looking at in 2013? Things to note: Im almost always using center AF point and recomposing, I dont care about FPS at all as I never shoot action, aaaand uhm. Thats all. *Upgrade is probably a sidegrade in this case. EDIT: ALSO LENS GEAR QUESTION. I scored the 20-35mm 2.8L on the cheap for around 200. It works just fine, but I was thinking of making some profit off it and getting the 28-70mm 2.8L as my all purpose lens on the 5D classic if I get it. Any experience with that lens? Im not too worried about age as I already own an early 90s lens.
Steve likes his 1Dx, and if you can justify it then why not go for it?
I ended up grabbing a 40mm 1.4 Nokton Trogdon as it was on sale at robertwhite, almost half the price of the Fuji, and I've been getting a lot of good results using MF lately.
Nice! I've heard good things about those voigt 35mm and 40mm's. they are so small
picked up an epson v600 for $100 today. time to get scanning
