why do some lenses have the zoom ring in front of the focus ring and some behind
its really annoying having both types
I just grab the front of the lens and push/pull.

Not sure if you're being serious but that does not work on all zoom lenses.
It does, you just have to force it.
Like this joke.
Those lenses are the best
Is there any point in getting a Nikon SLR if I want to do some film stuff or is my 1992 sony spxi w/ 28-80 good enough?
[editline]23rd December 2013[/editline]
the spxi also has some moderately sized AA powered flash

Also, just bought a roll of 35mm Ilford Delta 3200 for those special moments during holidays.
I'm trying to obtain one of them C41 B&W films by Kodak but a lot of photo stores don't supply those anymore and have to order first.[/QUOTE]
Are you chasing a kodak film in particular? Ilford have XP2 which is pretty nice if you want some quick black and white and you don't have a tank to develop yourself.
I've already shot a roll of XP2 Super 400 that's why I was hunting down Kodak's version. I've obtained a roll now.
I bought my first real camera this past black friday for ~$99, retails on amazon for $300 (with no discounts), can anyone give me some pointers or links to good threads?
Edit:
Oh yeah, it's a Nikon Coolpix l320.

I don't live in the UK, for some reason my country flag doesn't get displayed

don't worry frag4life linked me to a nice photo specialist that sells a lot of BnW film for bargain prices plus it's only 40 minutes public transport from home.

It's a point & shoot so just shoot man. That's what I did.
Start worrying about technical details once you have system camera.
welp looks like I wont be shooting medium format for a while because some cable in my lens broke
does anyone know what ever happened to the dust donut thing?

id love some for my nikon lenses, but I havent seen anything from this product since the kickstarter
This year has been my best for fancy gear buying, I got myself a Canon 1D mark 2 and a 28-80L, and some nice film cameras and lenses such as these

I wonder how good next year is going to be.
Are there any petal shaped lens hoods for the Canon 50mm 1.4? I can't really find any.
All I know is that the 50mm 1.4 has a 71mm bayonet mount for lens hoods.
It doesn't have to be of any particular brand, a cheap ebay one would suffice.
[editline]25th December 2013[/editline]
There are no other lenses in the Canon range that uses the 71mm mount it seems :v:
why does it need to be petal?
Because the circle one looks silly, and since I'm considering buying one (for extra protection) I might as well get a cooler looking one. :v:
Petal hoods are for wide angle lenses so it can be long and not vignette the corners
[QUOTE=Trogdon;43305381]Petal hoods are for wide angle lenses so it can be long and not vignette the corners[/QUOTE]
Well that's not really true though, considering how even the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 has a petal hood. :v:
You can put them on everything, and it doesn't really matter.
[editline]25th December 2013[/editline]
But I wasn't here to argue about that, I asked in order to find out whether or not they exist.
I thought petals were because they follow the shape of the film/sensor.
When I sell a camera body used and it still has the warranty active does the warranty remain active for the buyer or im guessing no?
no reason it shouldn't, granted you provide the right papers to let them do so
Got a new camera for christmas! The Canon rebelT3, if anyone remembers my previous posts here i had a Nikon camera but it was the Nikon1 and it could only use certain lenses so no loss there.

I shot a little bit with it and I love how quickly you can change the ISO and white balance settings(you had to go through a couple menus in the nikon 1 to change them), and it handles lighting a lot better too, can't wait to start using this.
Congrats :D
Lot's of stuff on sale this holiday season! Did anyone get anything?

im trying to snag a refurbed D7100 that normally goes for $1050 ($950 on sale from adorama) for $800 right now on ebay, but I need someone to buy my d5200 listing first, otherwise the listing will probably end or the cameras will be out of stock since they already sold 22 or 23 so i figure they must be all gone at this point :(

24 sold in 24 hours

tried to reply to this earlier, guess it didn't go through. but for zoom lenses, the hood has to be designed for the wide end (in this case 70mm) because otherwise it would cause vignetting. so the petal design is to make it as deep as they possibly can, while cutting out the corners so there isn't vignetting. i was on my phone so it was a bit of a simple reply, but yeah it's a wide lens type of thing, meaning that it's designed with the wide end of zooms in mind and wide angle lenses, sorry to be too vague. primes 50mm and over usually never have petal hoods because theirs can be made deep enough without requiring a petal design
i'd opt out of getting a third party hood (unless you really want a rubber hood) because they aren't specifically designed for one lens in mind, but rather a multitude of possible lenses. that and they usually aren't bayonet hoods, and if they are they still require some sort of base "screw in" part in order to be a regular bayonet. just a bit of a hassle really, i'd recommend buying a first party hood from somewhere like keh.com
A lot of the cheap ones off eBay doesn't have the fabric on the inside parts of the hood like in the OEM branded ones. Also, the locking parts might not work properly.
anyone wanna buy something for me for $800 and ill pay you $850 for it once I have the money in a few days
