So I got a D5100 and 18-55mm kit lens new for $479, I think I did well because D5100 bodies seem to run for >$500 everywhere. I haven't started playing around yet because I didn't realise I needed a memory card.
i love sd cards, i can shove like 6 in a card slot in my purse and be done with that.
putting them in to the sd card pouch in my camera bag is way too much hassle, they're impossible to get out again
I put them in those plastic boxes
I put them in my camera
what? how?
Put it in the mirror box when not in use

wow, i learn something new every day. thank you!
i usually stick mine in the viewfinder window so I know how much memory I have left
[editline]31st December 2013[/editline]
there might be an oddly shaped piece of glass in there instead but i just threw that part out
I save that for my buffer amount
Why use an expensive camera when I have my eyes! More pixels!

i was kidding ya goof :x
i have a hardon for the voigtlander 40mm f/2 but it costs a quite a bit compared to the 35mm f/1.8g and I have gone too long with the luxury of autofocus, not sure if I can go to manual focus only.
It would be a good thing to learn through practice
Been shooting exclusively with a manual-focus-only lens for almost a year now. It becomes muscle memory. One can sense the distance of subjects, and roughly match up where the focus ring should be without even thinking about it.
I've been manually focusing for DSLR video for probably 4 years now and I've come to the point of being able to nail focus pulls without a focus puller, only using muscle memory and looking at the monitor.

Makings running and gunning with a DSLR easier and more manageable.
Hey Trogdon, I asked about lenses to get for my A65 and you recommended the SAM 50mm f/1.8. What do you think about it? I got some money and was looking at that one and http://www.amazon.com/Sony-50mm-Alpha-Digital-Camera/dp/B000DZH9MY/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1388560348&sr=8-5&keywords=Sony+50mm+1.8 as the quality of that one seems to be better.
That sony 50 1.4 is just the exact same lens as the Minolta AF one you can get secondhand for like 200 USD. I would see no point in getting that lens new IMHO.

You're talking about that Carl Zeiss planar right?? The manual focusing on those lenses looks so smooth and pleasant.

same, been using my olympus lenses without any focus aid and the smallest viewfinder for over a year now, it has improved how i judge distance so much.

It's a good lens, but for the price I would recommend a Minolta 50mm 1.7 or Minolta 50mm 1.4. I've owned them both and they are really good lenses. They have metal mounts and work with full frame (good for use with film minolta's) so I really recommend them.

Also I manual focus all the time but it's in no way muscle memory to me ;( then again I use a lot of lenses with different focus throws. I love focus assists, with magnified live view being my favorite, I can get perfectly focused photos much more consistent manually than with an AF lens. Wouldn't shoot digi live view MF without focus peaking or tilt screens though.
I often find focus peaking annoying and gets in the way of composition and seeing what's in frame.
