Why not at the very least enable rating on OP
the dreaded smurfy effect I'd be neutral on OP ratings but I'm going to assume that's a shitton of extra work to implement compared to enabling/disabling.
My only issue with removing ratings from SH is now I don't know if a post is good or not when it tries to explain stuff (I.E if I have a question about the Greek issue), or when it's a fairly polarized issue and I don't really know who's side is best.
If no-OP ratings means less Ignhelper spamming — keep them disabled.
the dreaded smurfy effect
whats that?
whats that?
When users mass post articles, upwards of three or four a day, just to garner ratings. [editline]poop[/editline] v - And also trying to make stupid puns in the titles to do the above.
whats that?
Gratuitous news puns.
When users mass post articles, upwards of three or four a day, just to garner ratings. [editline]poop[/editline] v - And also trying to make stupid puns in the titles to do the above.
Is that even an issue? ratings arent really counted up anymore since like 2009
Is that even an issue? ratings arent really counted up anymore
and even if they do it they'll probably be banned for spamming the place up with a bunch of threads.
Is that even an issue? ratings arent really counted up anymore
It was an issue enough that ratings got removed from SH entirely, so [editline]8th July 2015[/editline] I guess
It was an issue enough that ratings got removed from SH entirely, so [editline]8th July 2015[/editline] I guess
Thats not why they were removed though
Thats not why they were removed though
woops
I manually removed ratings.
Why do you guys do things like this without at least asking/polling the community? Ratings were fine as they were.
did we just turn sensationalist headlines into mass debate look how that went
When users mass post articles, upwards of three or four a day, just to garner ratings.
Well at least now I can rest easy knowing that if I have a bunch of articles that SH doesn't have threads for I can post them all and not be accused of being a ratings whore
Why do you guys do things like this without at least asking/polling the community? Ratings were fine as they were.
The action is to fix the trash habits that make SH posters a laughing stock to the rest of the forum, SH would go down kicking and screaming no matter how polite we asked. The only people drawn to a poll like that would be those who feel affected by the loss and all that would generate is a whiny shitstorm followed by us doing it anyways. Imagine if we put up a post in GD asking if we should close LMAO pics for good, you can guarantee the lmao pic posters would vote no, the rest of the forum would be indifferent and either vote no because they lack reasons to close it or just not vote, and craptasket would vote yes

And then I remembered :v:.
The action is to fix the trash habits that make SH posters a laughing stock to the rest of the forum
This isn't being snarky or anything, don't get me wrong, but what habits would those be? The only "trash habits" that I saw in SH most of the time was rampant racism/xenophobia and homo/transphobia that people would either sit in the back and throw dumbs or just go through and rate everyone of one side disagree, and that's bannable in any part of the forum.
On reddit I understand wanting upvotes, because it rewards you like a highscore board, making everybody read your comment first. On FP, it's meaningless because whoever posts first will get the most ratings and dictate the conversation of the thread (with exclusions to dumb puns.)
Why do you guys do things like this without at least asking/polling the community? Ratings were fine as they were.
they know better than the community
This isn't being snarky or anything, don't get me wrong, but what habits would those be?
Why do you guys do things like this without at least asking/polling the community? Ratings were fine as they were.
We just like watching your reactions.
We just like watching your reactions.
I am so offended you remove my precious rating system which I used to know what my opinion should be on things!
I know people will just say "lel ur such an sheeple get smarte moran" but it just sorta makes the forum feel more sterile without them, I guess, less lively, one tiny bit of inter-user communication gone, etc.. As an example, used to be you could generally take a guess of the general consensus of FP users from what type of posts garner which ratings, which I guess you could still do by seeing who posts agreeing with a certain point (which will probably be bannable before long, if not already) or which points come up often enough. It doesn't really change much of anything important to be honest, just sort of changes the feel of the site, I guess. Sorta seems to me trying to turn SH into some bastion of reasonable dialogue is a lost cause either way.
We just like watching your reactions.
That's fucking CORRUPT and you know it you BIG MEANIE
On reddit I understand wanting upvotes, because it rewards you like a highscore board, making everybody read your comment first. On FP, it's meaningless because whoever posts first will get the most ratings and dictate the conversation of the thread (with exclusions to dumb puns.)
Actually, what I've noticed is the first handful of posts are rational responses, maybe the beginnings of an intelligent conversation, and of course the expected "funny" post that may or may not actually be that funny, and then some useless jackass brings up one of the four or five dead horses that SH insists on beating yet again and that winds up being the conversation dictator. For instance, any time an article is even tangentially related to video games, no matter what it is, Gamergate always comes up. Every single time. Even if it's something like a local firefighter dying in a huge tragedy and his wife says "well he was a simple man, just played WoW and kissed me a bunch and that was enough for him". Ratings removal might do something, might not, but if we're really going to improve SH we need to go with a full nuclear assault.
This isn't being snarky or anything, don't get me wrong, but what habits would those be? Shit we've consistently banned for but people don't learn from. People who get extreme about [x]phobias and the like get banned for their own reasons outside of rating, those kind of users happily trudge through a wall of boxes to keep being an asshole most times. Beyond that, even rating spam isn't bannable unless the users getting rated start derailing threads over it [editline]e[/editline] adding onto the 'dead horses' people bring up, there's always people who'll race to call out certain users who get heated over certain topics, and it's clearly just to get that little ego wank for being topical
Ratings removal might do something, might not, but if we're really going to improve SH we need to go with a full nuclear assault.
The thing is though, what would that entail?
How am I supposed to know if these posts are incredibly funny or incredibly dumb without the help of others? http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1475046
Well it certainly didn't prevent the shitposts from happening.
the dreaded smurfy effect I'd be neutral on OP ratings but I'm going to assume that's a shitton of extra work to implement compared to enabling/disabling.
Why don't you take an idea from reddit and disable ratings for a few hours to stop people from jumping bandwagon votes and puns from being instantly gratified? I don't really agree with reddits whole "hidden if downvoted", but the hidden score system is a good approach to letting people decide their own opinions without trying to fit in with the community.
Ratings removal might do something, might not, but if we're really going to improve SH we need to go with a full nuclear assault.
Gamergate only comes up on anything controversial because as soon as anybody even dares mention it, everybody from the corruption thread come rushing over with their opinion on GG. I did it too at one point, because it felt like people were misrepresenting it, but then I realized a vast majority of FP'ers already know and it just derails threads. I don't think ratings will have much of an effect on that.
Well it certainly didn't prevent the shitposts from happening.
There will always be shitposting, the problem is people trying to fit in, and ratings basically an easy way of knowing whether you do or not, but that can be manipulated quite easily. It only takes 1 or 2 people to rate something and everybody thinks that what FP's opinion is, and tries to be an expert on the subject. If a thread in News node and SS pop up on a controversial subject, your going to instantly notice there is a huge difference in opinion.
