It isn't a basic opinion though. It's called not forming your own opinion and debating it and not just bandwagoning with ratings and trolling the user. Ratings were shit in SH so no agree/disagree is not a basic opinion.
Do we really need to find the tiniest of loopholes to why that shouldn't be a thing? If you don't like ratings you can turn them off in the user panel. This is good to know especially if you're a sensitive bitch who gets bullied by people giving you dumb ratings or you just don't give a crap about them.
Not me, but no jokes imo there's some problems with mod communication. They do whatever they want then have a complaints thread probably to patronize us - if ratings come back to SH it'll be the first time the mods have made a big decision based on community feedback that I'm aware of. That doesn't happen with other websites.
At no time since the creation of the forums has Facepunch ever been a democracy. Does no one remember the words "These are Garry's forums and he can do as he pleases with them"? The mod team is an extension of that. The moderators aren't here to heed every poster's complaint or wish, they're here to root out the bad apples so the rest of us can discuss our common interests.
friendly reminder that 'why reply' has always been a valid ban reason for those kind of posts
If only we had a system to let people know how you feel about their post without having to reply... Nah to be honest the only thing I can see that will be bad about this is more people arguing over shitposts because they can't rate dumb anymore, but I guess we'll see how it pans out. Might improve SH, not like you guys wouldn't have discussed it all.
I feel like no ratings is a good thing in a way. Some people may be afraid to post an opposing opinion because the reply has 100+ agrees. For example, "Bush sucks" post will have 100 agrees but someone may disagree but be discouraged to post because he knows he'll get boxes and disagrees shoved down his throat. This way people don't have to get attacked for having an opinion.

Except maybe to shovel all of it into one place, which makes it even worse when they respond to really good ideas and suggestions with whatever it is they're doing. If this isn't the purpose of the thread, then they should at least be honest about that.

Not to mention Robotboy, who started the thread, isn't exactly a "moderator" in the sense of Starpluck or Postal.

I am still kinda sceptical if the lack of ratings will truly affect the issues mentioned.
It's called "Making Facepunch better" though and if disabling ratings can improve the forum, then why not try it?
I'm not against disabling ratings.
I am still kinda sceptical if the lack of ratings will truly affect the issues mentioned.
This. I'm not against disabling ratings, but I have strong doubts it'll actually have the affect the mods are expecting. I doubt even more that we'll get them back if the mods reasons for disabling them don't work out.
It's called "Making Facepunch better" though and if disabling ratings can improve the forum, then why not try it?
It's more like "Ignore all the things you actually want and we'll add things as we please" now
why don't you guys make your own forum if you hate this one so much
It's called "Making Facepunch better" though and if disabling ratings can improve the forum, then why not try it?
I don't see it as an improvement
As reiterated prior — we do not believe the inclusion (or rather rating substitution) of an "Agree" or "Disagree" will change the Sensationalist Headline's rating-problematic behavior. In response to my example of 'dumbing' a post, you held that having a "Disagree" would serve as a suitable replacement. My illustration of the example is not based on a rude or meaner rating such as 'dumb' which can be neutered down to disagree — but rather the impulsive tendency to disregard a post in a matter of seconds without debate — even as the poster deserved an elevated level of respect for taking several minutes to conjure his argument. This discourages the poster from continuing, and that act should only occur after a well-reasoned reciprocating response was directed at the original poster.
It feels like you're trying to turn SH into Mass Debate which would be awful since SH is actually enjoyable and ratings added to the overall experience. I love seeing what other people agree with, think is stupid or otherwise. It gives me insight onto people's ideas and behavior. Without it, it's really taken a lot out of the forum for me. I'm not here to just clash with mods for fun, I really found stimulation and enjoyment from that feature. It may have in theory caused problems but removing it has the possibility of creating more problems or most likely, doing nothing at all. Also instead of disagreeing with a post, I'm much more likely to just not respond. Not having ratings isn't going to force me to post to express my opinion.
Anyway just a random suggestion to move things away from this whole ratings thing, Fast Threads should be a restricted access type deal. For example certain users can be flagged to lose Fast Threads access instead of constantly getting banned. Of course they can earn their way back in by actually participating in the main forums.
why don't you guys make your own forum if you hate this one so much
The irony here is that most of us here are critical of changes because we love this one so much.
turning off ratings doesn't sling you in to an alternate universe where the rest of the people on the forums also have ratings off
[t]http://i.imgur.com/RgQOmJp.png[/t] You are right, but rating system is unique feature of Facepunch (I haven't seen it anywhere else). But it could be an optional feature when you create new thread.
The irony here is that most of us here are critical of changes because we love this one so much.
no i get it and all but i mean, most people including myself have been here for years now (my first account was made in 2010 -- been browsing on one or another since then) and yet it seems like a lot of people still don't get that the mods/admins/garry will ultimately do what they want and no amount og being critical of what they do will revert the changes
While I can see the reason behind disabling ratings, which allegedly can have an effect on a discussion, I believe there can also be a different approach to it. Now that ratings for SH have been disable, going through threads there seem much less compelling or interesting. We could have a system where it's up to the thread creator or even poster the decide if his thread/post has ratings enabled, that way it won't scare off the poster who has an opinion that differs from another user that has a hundred of agree's on a post from getting showered with dumb ratings.
why don't you guys make your own forum if you hate this one so much
I once went to a forum that some ex moderators and users from the GameSpot forums created. I have never in all my days encountered a circle jerk as big as that one. Not even Oify/TGMF/whatever the moderators here use to communicate could touch it.
My concern is that with FP, changes like this are usually done with a "just try it" mentality and if they end up not actually fixing the problem it's never reverted for some reason. Personally I enjoy news puns when they aren't utter garbage and it's satisfying to drop a funny post and look back to see that it's made however many people laugh enough to rate it.

This'll just increase arguments and debates. People get shut down when the entire forum near-unanimously agrees that they're dumb. Now they won't see that mass disapproval of their opinions, however ignorant or edgy or truthful, and they'll argue and argue to defend it. Guarantee that the next thread about a dead black kid or a mass shooting or a transgender person will be even more of a spite-filled argument than it usually is. Nobody will want to let up, because they won't be able to see if they have support or not.
Since ratings have been disabled, maybe it's time to allow news puns again? With ratings disabled, people won't be inclined to make puns just to whore funnies and zings, but rather when they're appropriate and actually funny. I loved going to SH back in the day just to laugh at the crazy puns. I fondly remember mojo week as one of the best things that ever happened to the section.
I want ratings back in SH. They were fun. I remember when I would be triggered by ratings. then I stopped caring.

This is what all the changes have been geared toward, right? :v:
All of these agrees on pro-disabling ratings posts and disagrees on anti-disabling ratings posts is pretty ironic when you think about it. Also, I notice that a number of the people sided with the disabling of ratings tend to be the people who get dumbed regularly for bad posts/opinions or the silent raters you see rating things all over and not posting... Connection? You decide. :v: [editline]banana[/editline] I think at the very least allowing agree and disagree is the best option. It's the best of both worlds to allow people to contribute and not be trolled with ratings.

Because it just means it's not coming back.
If anything disable the dumb rating because in SH it's used exclusively instead of disagree :v:
