• Making Facepunch better - Don't post about ratings

i mean it is a pretty big change that people have opinions about, it isn't like changing the background color or something which i think would be stupid to discuss for more than 3 posts
the biggest example of ratings whoring in SH
But the post was genuinely funny? Like, what if the person has satisfaction from getting funny ratings, does that invalidate the comedy (which is imho a crucial part of SH)? By the logic of "post is getting rated funny, hence the person is a rating whore", standup comedians are unfunny because they are making jokes to get paid. Firstly you are making a presumption you aren't really entitled to, secondly, who cares? I have a laugh, what's wrong about making the person feel good about themselves with a virtual pat on the back? Usually I felt like the people complaining about rating whoring are kinda jealous that someone's joke or opinion is successful, why do you care?
After culminating over 11 pages on this matter — the mods have reviewed each and every post in support and against ratings with great detail — and will no longer be entertaining further suggestions on this issue. We believe 11 pages of discussion have provided an ample platform for viewpoints, and it is no longer feasible to continue for another 11 pages without eroding on the other genuine work that occurs in this thread. We may be banning posters who continue resurrecting the issue in order to enforce compliance.
For you. But remember, this forum isn't only for you.
I meant easiest for the moderators because it really doesnt matter to me if there are icons under posts or not. I posted here when they didnt exist in the first place. Im just used to the changes maybe or dont really notice
so how about those read replies
Lol if people just aren't posting in SH anymore then we'd obviously consider that a step in the wrong direction. That's a very silly question. As far as what we're hoping to see, specifically? In no particular order: Less dumb snipes Less pointless video game references Less pun posts Less PM's from people whining about negative ratings More active participation Smoother flow to threads More involved conversations Basically, just less of what makes SH annoying and more of what makes it good. We want it to be more discussion-oriented and less about jockeying for ratings. Maybe this will help, maybe it won't. Time will tell!
Did you consider that dumb unfunny snipes, HUGELY the misplaced video game references and bad puns usually get dumbrated to shit and the system works as deterrence as much as encouragement? And if somebody PMs to whine about ratings they should be dismissed and/or banned for whining about ratings? What happened to the standard rule that drama about ratings forbidden? And I would love you to elaborate on the ideas of "More active participation", "Smoother flow to threads" and "More involved conversations" because they sound more like obviously desirable buzz phrases with no empirical connection to ratings, tho.
We may be banning posters who continue resurrecting the issue in order to enforce compliance.
I suggest you wait like 5 minutes because there's probably 20 people typing something about this right now, unaware of your post even existing yet. :v: [editline]o[/editline] Well that also works.
-snip- just seen starpluck post, sorry
Im just surprised ratings actually mean this much that people will bitch about it for days, if you cant tell a good post from a bad one without icons telling you then lol
This is literally a thread to discuss changes to the forums, if you don't like it then don't come to the thread. (User was banned for this post ("Did not read - no more discussions" - Starpluck))
Oh whoops fair enough.
[del]
SH is not separated from the rest of Facepunch, so you're basically saying that this rampant "abuse" is tolerable and accepted outside of SH.
I'm not really seeing why people keep using arguments like this. There's a big difference between SH and other forums as has been pointed out repeatedly over the past several pages. The abuse is something that happens in SH but isn't really an issue elsewhere. Not just because it's not as important an issue there but also because it simply doesn't happen very often. Several issues that are predominantly a notable issue in SH but not nearly as much elsewhere: trolling through ratings for replies (rating an awful article funny is all but guaranteed to get at least one person complaining about it and subsequently shitting up the thread for several posts), it should theoretically get rid of the majority of the shitty puns and references since many of those people seem to do it just to farm ratings, it will help control bandwagons to a point where many people would just rate an opposing opinion without ever posting. Though that latter one may just result in people not rating but still not posting. I know it would in my case since I tend to avoid arguing in SH topics simply because it's frustrating as hell to carefully write up a solid and logical argument only to have the person you're arguing against completely ignore everything you said in favor of parroting their previous argument even though you explained why it's wrong or replying to someone who made an inflammatory reply so they can feel like all opposing arguments are just a personal attack on them. (Also half the time someone has already said exactly what I wanted to say anyways so there's no point in me posting to reiterate it.)
I am still kinda sceptical if the lack of ratings will truly affect the issues mentioned.
How wouldn't it? If people do the things that people are trying to use as a counterargument then they'll be banned as the mods have said. At that point the only question is whether disabling the ratings will encourage people to post their thoughts or just continue lurking while not rating.
Sometimes those are the best parts of threads.
More often than not they're completely brainless garbage.[/del]
We may be banning posters who continue resurrecting the issue in order to enforce compliance.
Well shit. I had a lot to catch up on and have been writing replies as I go. Not going to bother snipping it because I don't bother with snipping posts but I [del]ed it at least.
We may be banning posters who continue resurrecting the issue in order to enforce compliance.
There should be an easier way to see mod warnings like this. Being banned for missing or glossing over a mod warning on page 12 on a 26 page thread kinda sucks.
It's in the title — as has been two hours ago.
It's in the title — as has been two hours ago.
Most people don't really look for the title changing though. I didn't even notice it had changed until you just pointed it out.
I know it's probably said a billion times but a true notification system for example when someone quotes you would be pretty nice. I know there's something a like but it'd be really easy to be honest..
I think that would be pretty nice, and probably easy to implement(?)
We may be banning posters who continue resurrecting the issue in order to enforce compliance.
well, it works for north korea
Separate ticker tab for things concerning you and your posts
Actually I'd like notifications better. For example like a notification next to your username when some posts on your proifle, then a little view with posts made by you that are quoted /replied to by others.

I know there's something a like but it'd be really easy to be honest..
That seems like it could get quite crowded depending on what threads you post in. Imagine going AFK for ten minutes and when you come back you have twenty notifications from various threads because you post in busy topics/threads with a small poster-count but lots of regulars. You'd have to make some kind of dedicated page for it such as an Events/Read Threads-esque thing. [editline]9th July 2015[/editline]
Actually I'd like notifications better. When a subscribed thread gets new posts it only shows one entry (saying something like "Garry and 50 others posted in Making Facepunch better" or "Garry and 50 others quoted you in Making Facepunch better") which is useful. It's kind of like the subscription system we have here but it keeps track of mentions and while it has a dedicated page for notifications it actually has a little popout menu that it normally uses instead. I have a few suggestions (if you guys are interested): 1) Some type of consolidated area/way where all of these forum changes (including section rule/feature changes) are posted. Something like a sub forum (above GD) where mods can post a thread, whenever there is a change people should know about happens, explain the changes and their reason, and users can post their feedback (but not create threads). It kind of sucks that we have to go digging in GD threads to find out a change has been made, and we wouldn't have the problem of bloating threads like this with pages giving opinions on changes. 2) There is a problem (for me anyways) where threads will auto "mark as unread" if I haven't been to the thread in a bit. This sucks on low activity threads that I like to lurk in from time to time, because without the "x new posts", they end up blending in with the rest of the threads. It's not a huge deal (as I can always subscribe to threads), but it would be nice to remove that. 3) we've gone a while with the consolidated forums, and I think we should tweak it a bit. I think the arts (like movies, music, and photography) should get their own "art" sub forum. Since these categories have been able to maintain several different threads in GD, consolidating them into a separate sub-forum would not only clean up GD a little, but it would also make it easier to find the thread you want on these topics, and keeping them together in a sub forum means it will be one decently used sub forum instead of 5 lightly used ones.

That just doesn't really add up. Speaking of which, if the main reason to stop the ongoing discussion is that it erodes on the other work in this thread, would it be allowed to make a thread in General Discussion where posters can continue to talk about how they feel about the ratings being disabled in Sensational Headlines? That way people can still give their opinion about it without hindering discussion about other feedback on the forum in this thread.
you already know they're not even gonna listen move along citizen
This comment is going to get deleted but oh well. Wasn't the point of the ratings to reduce comments like "lol" and "so funny" and "this is stupid"? So the discussion that they want is clearly an influx of bullshit one liner posts like that and snipes and zingers. Because when you remove that little outlet of expressing someone's simple opinion then people are going to knee-jerk with bad posts to respond so the OP knows how they feel about it. This was the entire reason for ratings in the first place. This is especially relevant in a opinion-charged forum like SH. Y'all ever been to /r/news or /r/worldnews that doesn't have the little outlet? It's a shithole. The "discussions" revolved around vile and uneducated opinions clogging out any decent post. I'd rather have some idiot/racist/homophobe/[insert person with stupid opinion in your own mind] rating posts than spewing ignorance in written form where everyone is forced to engage in it or has to be exposed to it. If they wanted to encourage proper discussion based on merit of the post then they had a forum for that- Mass Debate- and they deleted it. In the words of Immortan Joe: "Mediocre." (User was banned for this post ("Ignores the warning" - Big Dumb American))
So it's been a while since the forum removal and I remember a mod saying that if it didn't work out it'd be changed back. It obviously isn't working out, GD is a shithole and the single-column looks awful. Will it be changed back? A few forums like the Creationism Corner and MS Paint I visited a lot and most of the threads in them are just gone.
Give us an option to put a capital infront of our name. I swear i put a capital G when i did my username. I never put a small G on Greeley. It hurts me everytime a post :(
