Making Facepunch better - Don't post about ratings

[QUOTE=teh pirate;48158635]I've never seen anyone say the forums were better off without the fun emoticons, I still see a lot of people posting them in img tags from the SA smilies list. (and I obviously miss them)
And, well, we don't really have a choice. The thread I linked to was a perfect example of concerns people voiced ending up being totally real.[/QUOTE]
Then try and campaign to get them back. Shit has been reverted on Facepunch a bunch, either because it didn't do its intended purpose or enough people wanted them back.
Somehow or another puns managed to be unbanned in Sensationalist Headlines for a while after a hard ban came down on them.

SA smilies were removed and won't be coming back because Garry didn't want to take all of SA's smilies, which is understandable, but regrettable. It wasn't because anyone thought we'd be better off without them.

I remember the pun ban. Its fantastic at first and then SH got boring.
I dunno about anybody else but a lot of the negativity and frustration towards the decision-making process of the mod team comes from the fact that historically, not counting this thread, nearly all major changes to Facepunch are features and sections of the forum being stripped down or removed.
And then when people go "yo not cool we were using that" whatever they lost is [I]never[/I] restored.
It's not very often that we get to give feedback on something that isn't quite minor being added to the forums. I look forward to the tag system being implemented, something to look forward to for once.

The pun ban is literally a ban on fun, and yet its execution and shitstorm surrounding it was a joke.

That's why it was amazing at first because everyone came up with the best possible puns to annoy the admins at the time.

tbh I'd love a pixel art contest thread where we can just continually generate emoticons for this forum until we have close to SA's level
[QUOTE=postal;48158601]if something's been discussed to death to the point any other posts get lost in a sea of shit then so what if we say "that's enough for now"? It's still better than never having the thread to begin with lol.
Besides, like BDA said, we want to test out this rating change. If shit isn't working after awhile then of course we can see about reverting but first you have to actually TRY it out instead of just declaring that it can't work right away.[/QUOTE]
'awhile' is a relative term.
We've been fed enough excuses with relative terms in the past.
See why people are really concerned at-best?

If only there was a forum where something like that would fit in :(
Just a little corner to be creative in.

That sounds familiar, its like I've heard that somewhere before. I like the idea.
No ratings in SH is a positive change. Now people have to actually explain their stances and opinions without hiding behind a stupid box icon? Sign me the fuck up. I'm also behind the idiot cull going on, with morons posting only with one word replies because they're salty they can't click a stupid icon anymore to make their points for them.
"Now the world won't know I agree with this post! The horror! Oh, I know, I can contribute nothing to the thread and say 'Neat.' That will sure show them!"
Devs/mods: if we were to have a thread for designing emoticons in General Discussion, would you consider repopulating the smilies list with them if quality content appears?

Wasn't one of the main reasons why we lost emotes because SA bitched about FP stealing their emoticons or something?
Because if that's the case then this is an even better idea than it already is.

Except people with something to contribute are getting banned anyway

I don't think so, FP used to be (still is?) full of goons. I don't think they care, but Garry didn't want to keep borrowing from SA.
[QUOTE=RejectedPost;48158750]Wasn't one of the main reasons why we lost emotes because SA bitched about it or something?[/QUOTE]
SA bitches about a lot of things.

Perhaps they should try to stick to posting when they want to contribute, instead of contributing in some posts and [I]then [/I]posting some posts without putting any effort into it?
The mods don't calculate your good vs bad post ratio, they see a useless post and act on that, which makes perfect sense.

This is a forum, everyone here wants to contribute their opinion, their opinion has every right to be as simple as "I think this thing is great". The rating system let them express that without using a post for it, which permitted neater discussions that weren't riddled with very short posts. Without ratings people resort to posting to express their opinions (the horror)
[QUOTE=RejectedPost;48158750]Wasn't one of the main reasons why we lost emotes because SA bitched about FP stealing their emoticons or something?[/QUOTE]
that'd be pretty funny if true considering one of my old FP avatars got taken by someone there and made into an SA emoticon
[img]http://i.somethingawful.com/forumsystem/emoticons/emot-jiggled.gif[/img]
granted all I added was the angry eyebrows, it's still weird to see on a forum I don't even use lol. Especially when you consider we had an entire moderator avatar fad around that avatar and now it's instead been immortalized on a different forum entirely. So fucking random.
but yeah we need more of our own emoticons.
so is there anyway we can see articles return
I've always been kinda curious about SA and if it's actually bad or not. Forums hating other forums is pretty standard procedure.

It also facilitated the bandwagon effect where we got zergs of like minded people clashing in every discussion.
Unlike BDA who thinks this is a hivemind, Facepunch has always been smaller groups of like minded people locked together on the FP banner and they occasionally end up clashing against each other especially in SH, hence the term zerg instead of hive.
[QUOTE=Oicani Gonzales;48158819]postal's ass must be an emoticon[/QUOTE]
Portal's assmoticon must be a thing.
Why are opinion pieces officially banned in SH? These surely warrant discussion as much as anything else, and I almost never see this being enforced. Most news has some kind of slant to it anyway.
[QUOTE=Oicani Gonzales;48158819]postal's ass must be an emoticon[/QUOTE]
Have [I]That Cat[/I] as an original emoticon, and make an Idiot Cull to where anyone who uses it instantly gets permabanned.

SA tends to be harsher than average for most forums, though if you don't post badly/offend too many people/post in the right sections in a good on-topic manner, you can find a lot of quality content there on the forums. I own an account there, but the vast amount of rules/their often arbitrary enforcement even compared to most boards put me off from posting, I just read the LP archives.
[QUOTE=SGTNAPALM;48158736] Oh, I know, I can contribute nothing to the thread and say 'Neat.' That will sure show them!"[/QUOTE]
If there was only some way of showing what you think of a thread or post without having to post, Maybe some kind of poll of what you and other posters think of it. When you click it, it could say "don't post about this"
I dont know if they would implement this polling system to SH though.

I wonder why not-news would be banned in a news subforum. Real brainteaser, that one.

wait so is it fine to post photoshop contest threads in gd?
[QUOTE=RejectedPost;48158893]I wonder why not-news would be banned in a news subforum. Real brainteaser, that one.[/QUOTE]
Don't intentionally be thick. For example, every article on The Economist is more or less an opinion piece. However, it is also news at the same time, because the article itself is news. Is this disallowed? These is absolutely no obvious separation between what an opinion piece and news actually is.
[QUOTE=Sand Castle;48158901]wait so is it fine to post photoshop contest threads in gd?[/QUOTE]
Well, mods moved "Photoshop Subways Sandwiches Into Hentai comics" into GD so I assume that means yes.
