Making Facepunch better - Don't post about ratings

How about a Creationism Corner section that includes the old Creationism Corner, MS Paint, Musician's Gig Room, Photography, and Photoshop Contests. Then a hobbies section to include Music, Automotive Addicts, Airsoft, Film/TV, Fitness, and that other crap?
Like what was done with Hardware and Software. Also maybe move that so it's not sandwiched between News Node and SH.
I got a great suggestion; banning those who keep talking about ratings. There's an additional 5 posts talking about ratings on this page alone. :rolleye:
I think that most posters want some concrete answers from the mods about how the forum is being ran and with the recent changes. I don't see anything wrong with that given how this is pretty much the mod feedback thread of the site at the moment.
Besides that, seeing as it is oblivious that people really want to discuss the topic further, I think that a new thread discussing just that would be justified. Probably going to make it tomorrow seeing how it does comply with the General Discussion rules.
When I post a reply on, say, page 3 of a 4-page thread without having read page 4 yet, when I'm next in the section that thread is in it will still count page 4 as unread and show me X amount of unread posts.
Does anyone have the userscript that reduces font size of usertitles?
Does anyone have the userscript that reduces font size of usertitles?
it's in faceraper2013
it's in faceraper2013
Never mind, I found it:
var usertitles = document.getElementsByClassName("usertitle");
for (var i = 0; i < usertitles.length; ++i)
{
usertitles[i].style["font-size"] = "10px";
var fonts = usertitles[i].getElementsByTagName("font");
for (var j = 0; j < fonts.length; j++)
{
fonts[j].setAttribute("size", 1);
}
}
Excuse me? I've at least questioned once before and haven't been banned for discussing them on-topic.
give each subforum it's own column to appeal to people with ultrawide monitors

Example?
Except people with something to contribute are getting banned anyway
I don't think so, FP used to be (still is?) full of goons. I don't think they care, but Garry didn't want to keep borrowing from SA.
People who think they're contributing and want to blame others instead of figuring out that the conversation is over are going to get banned. If you don't have common sense, don't know when to stop, and think that protesting endlessly or posting forever about something is a good thing, you're going to get banned.
Excuse me? I've at least questioned once before and haven't been banned for discussing them on-topic.
You are excused, now try to understand that it doesn't matter that you got away with it because it wasn't even allowed in the first place.
Someone simply failed to ban you.
I've got a whole emoticon creation thread OP typed up with a tutorial. If FP actually generates decent emoticons, can they be accepted as a forum change?
Easy to spot when it's a whole threads worth. They're not always reported and we can't see everything at all times.
If you post something like "cool" or "neat" You'll get banned and it's always been that way. You can still express your awe in short sentences that at least add a bit of content to the thread, but thoughtless one word posts are a bad idea.
Should allow ratings on OP then. People who want to post 'neat' can just rate winner, and people who have something to actually add, will add something.

Wow, who put this angry nerd in charge here?
Seriously, calm down, its as if you have a grudge against everyone in here.
More on-topic, is there any chance we could get some notification about having your posts quoted? Like, it would direct to the posts where your words were quoted or something, like on reddit?
The MAIN and I mean absolutely MAIN problem with SH is that people do not or refuse to read the comments after page 1. Especially in heated topics, several pages worth of content were always people reading the OP or half of page one, ignoring ALL the discussion and then posting the same old topics that were being debated. Que 10 people 'correcting' said people.
The mod team cannot correct human behaviour, but if you seriously want to turn SH into a mass debate-lite, you need to spend more time giving warnings to people who continually go from page 1 to page 5 and don't bother with anything inbetween. If 'discussion' is the main focus of article posts then mods need to spend more time course correcting.

This is because people like to skim over threads and only read the replies that got rated a certain way.
This is because people like to skim over threads and only read the replies that got rated a certain way.
I don't think it had anything to do with ratings, it has to do with people voicing their oppinions/critisms with no attempt at reading the thread. If it was about ratings, they'd rate and move on, or endlessly quote from page 1. That didn't usually happen.
User 1 makes comment on page 1/2
User 2,3,4,5 debate it.
User 6 makes same/similar comment to user 1 on page 5. Bitches that he's being 'trolled' because nobody will listen to him.
User 2,3,4,5 debate it again
User 7 makes similar comment and then bitches that he's being 'trolled' because nobody will listen to him.
Again, it's not in every thread, just very heated ones. It ruins most threads where 'progress' is being made at reaching thoughtful answers. So many times it ends in a bitter struggle between two or three users and utterly fizzles out to a fruitless preamble that nobody ever bothers to read. Then when the topic comes up again, we repeat the circle.
If the mods want to move on from puns and bitching, it needs a more active mod presence.

I'd have to agree with this for being the most glaring issue with SH and forums in general. People reply to controversial posts on the first pages and don't realize it's been argued to death in the pages they skipped which just causes pointless repetition.
So what the mods should do is ban people for starting up the same argument in a thread.
And I have to add that the goals big dumb american listed on page 107 which they are trying to achieve are miniscule compared to this. This is something they could start right now and would make a noticeable difference. But it would require actual work and it seems like certain mods are more intent on trying to reduce their workload than actually doing what's best for the users.
new question:
Any explanation for why quoting a post puts a single space character in the second line after the

tags?
it's been there so long i reflexively backspace twice + enter before writing a response to a quoted post just to get rid of it, even though it's harmless and unnoticeable.
i just wanna know if anyone can tell me why it shows up
Status on the notifications: the userscript can currently poll and scrape the ticker for all the threads on it. Tomorrow I'm going to work on getting it to only display a Toast notification if a specific thread is posted in, then finally determine if a user mentioned you in a quote.

That would be a great way to make sure no one posts in SH anymore. No one wants to read 10 pages of generally terrible discussion and/or bandwagon comments in order to post without being banned.

if you have no interest in reading that, then don't is what i say. i think it's dumb as well but it hardly bothers me. without being able to share your real opinion or perspective on an issue there's not much to say besides a general acknowledgement.
Can we make it so if a post gets 100x dumbs the post turns into postals ass and you have to click the image to see the post

Nice. :rolleye: You still can't understand that just because the mods let it slide doesn't make it allowed.
Can I just say I'm stoked to see that tags might happen? Thanks a ton for even considering.
first thing I would do with tags is disable them
first thing I would do with tags is disable them
A lot of people criticize features as being unnecessary until they get it, and then they use the shit out of it. I don't know why you wouldn't want more functionality for filtering and finding threads you'd actually want to see, so I'm just going to consider you as a contrarian for the sake of being contrarian.
Did I miss this tagging discussion? SH has a rule specifically against it, so i'm wondering where the idea of going forum wide comes in

BDA isn't promising anything, nor are the rest of the staff, but it sounds like they're trying to meet the rest of the forum members half-way with the idea of tagging GD forum posts so that it's easy to find stuff like creative works and what not.
