we've had more than just labpunch, a few of the systems garry dinked about with were pretty smooth and I'm sad we didn't make the push for it. I wonder if any of the decisions not to move were swayed by a lack of ability to transfer user accounts from here to the new one. Just opening new user registration and forcing FP members to manually push themselves to the new site would deter a lot of people from wanting to move to the new system as they'd lose their FP history, be it membership or title or post count or general recognizeability. God forbid a shitton of idiots managed to park user's names to troll it up
I'm not known by any other name anywhere on the internet, if I were to lose this name to some other asshole, I wouldn't be at FP anymore then. [editline]21st June 2015[/editline] The history, post count and title can go if needed, I'd like to think I'm known for those by my name alone anyway.
xenforo offers a tool to go from vbulletin 4 to xenforo [editline]21st June 2015[/editline] only issue is gold membership but maybe there could be some kind of verification system based on the email address linked to the gold account on vbulletin? it would suck to lose gold -- think of how much money everyone has spent on it over time [editline]21st June 2015[/editline] hey garry
Images and HTML5 videos should be fixed on FireFox within 5 minutes.
Images and HTML5 videos should be fixed on FireFox within 5 minutes.
I can confirm that it works.

Or maybe I'm just being too negative. [editline]22nd June 2015[/editline] Since I'm uneducated on the topic, just how much of an improvement would switching forum types be for FP? [editline]22nd June 2015[/editline] All I really know is that VBulletin is supposed to be a pain in the ass.

[editline]22nd June 2015[/editline] Since I'm uneducated on the topic, just how much of an improvement would switching forum types be for FP?
well, the layout of the forums would change a little bit, not beyond basic forum logic though. xenforo behaves a little bit differently than vbulletin, for example when you post the entire page doesn't refresh, there's a notification system, etc. if importing/conversion works, you should be able to log in with all of your posts in tact
http://testyourmight.com/ does.
http://testyourmight.com/ does.
christ that site feels cramped
are there any forums that use xenforo now?
uh... yeah? i was on one a couple of months ago but i left and it was private -- can't think of any others because fp is the only forum i really frequent now but it's really widely used from the looks of things
are there any forums that use xenforo now?
http://forums.steamrep.com/ uses XenForo.
Can't really see the benefit of changing to that.
I'm really a big fan of Facepunchs layout because of how much content you can fit into a page. I feel thats lost with some types of software (especially their mobile sites)
probably just me but every forum software ive seen other than vb looks really cheap imo. and even then a lot of vb skins look shitty too
probably just me but every forum software ive seen other than vb looks really cheap imo. and even then a lot of vb skins look shitty too
FP is the result of a LOT of customization, and it turned out well. Makes it all the harder to move away from it
FP is the result of a LOT of customization, and it turned out well. I think the Starbound Forums look pretty nice and they use XenForo It's customizable just like other forum softwares
FP is the result of a LOT of customization, and it turned out well. Makes it all the harder to move away from it
oh yeah i know that. but even disregarding that, my vbulletin experience has always been better than other forum experiences.
"With extensive modification (don't buy vBulletin and expect it to be as awesome as this modified board is)" [editline]21st June 2015[/editline] a general chat post icon would be nice
that's the point it took a long time learning the hard way to get where we are, and those standards have to be upheld. A lot of behind-the-scenes new-forum-system tests we've done have been one part learning what cool features they have, and two parts tearing it apart to try rebuilding it how we need it. It'll take a long time to get something that feels like home and I don't think garry or anyone here would be all too pleased if this place looked like a generic done-by-my-friend little pile of defaults for any period of time in transition and I actually think dark-with-white text is a terrible idea 9 out of 10 times. The Star Citizen forums pull it off decent (likely because it isn't black-white eye straining contrast), but their forum system is really lacking outside of its skin. (it also uses nested quotes with a 'view more quotes' button after getting two-deep so that's a nice reference for an earlier conversation) personally I'd love to come up with a few proper 'official' dark-and-light forum color schemes, in the event we had a system that allowed it.
are there any forums that use xenforo now?
tens of thousands i'd imagine. i've been to more xenforo forums in the past 2-3 years than any other kind.
-snip nvm-
Why don't we change this: to this: Just a simple edit of ".blockbody", eh?

I can currently take Facepunch offline for a few seconds by issueing a search querry. Is that just me and that special querry or is it a general problem?
I can currently take Facepunch offline for a few seconds by issueing a search querry. Is that just me and that special querry or is it a general problem?
I doubt that the query would be the reason behind FP having downtime.
there really needs to be a better way of seeing how old a thread is there should be like, a big sign at the top of the page saying when the last post was made, if the thread is older than 1 month or 2 weeks. "Just remembering to always check date" is dumb that's impossible
tbh fp should never move away from vb because in some ways it feels like this isn't vb And I'm sure you could replace the main vb functions anyway
