you dont need a mac for anything, a pc handles everything a mac does, just better
you need a mac to make iphone apps. goodbye.
[editline]04:42PM[/editline]
Simulator comes with the SDK.
YES that's the point.
install sdk on a hackint0sh so you're not forking out 2 grand if you can't even code yet.
Craigslist, nuff said.
I can get a mac there for $500.
$500 is still too much for a first timer.
You're going the right way atleast, going for the cheapest they got. You don't need that monster above to make some iPhone apps.
Try looking on eBay or Amazon for the cheapest mac laptop you can find.
Dude, you have no fucking idea how difficult coding an app is.
Where do I start, ah, here.
First off, you need to have the latest version of OS X. If you don't, yer fucked. OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.4 to be specific. Secondly you need to have serious extensive knowledge in C++ or Cocoa, preferably C++.
Now, third, you have to think of a good idea for your app. You have to hit the right spot on your idea. The only problem is, whatever you think of, its probably already made. And if you do copy someones idea, you have to take it into serious consideration why your app would be any better with no experience.
If your an ideas guy, don't even start.
Not to mention the fees. $99 a year for the developer program, which opens your developer portal to write certificates. You need up to date certificates and provisional profiles, not to mention developer license and distribution licenses.
Also, you have to submit your tax info, credit card, and all the bank shit. It doesn't sound like you have those. I didn't either, so I had to make a bank account and open up a paypal and link to that.
If your opening as an individual developer, there's some tax fees. I'm eventually going ro open to a company, I have no choice.
First off, apple gets 30% of the sales, and if your an indie, tax is 25%. You get the 25% back at tax time; and good luck with your taxes. So for every 0.99 cents on your app, you get 45%. After taxes you get 70%.
And submitting an app is a pain in the ass, your certificates must match, or it will not upload to the iTunes database.
But hell, that didn't stop me. That should be all the main issues, but prepare to face not a lot, not a ton, A WHOLE FUCKING SHITLOAD of compile errors. Gotta fix those.
I'm not trying to bring you down, just, informing you rather.

I'm thirteen, and i'm an iPhone developer. :toot:
Learn objective C before you think about buying a mac for iPhone/OSX development. If you're used to C++, you probably will hate it deeply.
[editline]12:13AM[/editline]
Oh, and also, don't think that you'll return the investment in the mac by developing apps. Chances are, if you even finish your app, if you can put together the money to join the app store developer program, and your app gets accepted by Apple, you still won't make enough money to cover the costs past the enrollment fee.
Read above post
I have a 1/2 complete script that now i need to finish.
Doesn't sound like objective C to me. Have you honestly completed an actual application in Obj-C?
Macs are actually the supreme pc anyone who disagrees isn't a pro
Yes, I have. ATM I have the base code, I just need to make a LOT more IBOutlet buttons and media-player plugins to attatch them to.
You can make iphone apps on PC but its against the EULA.

Just port it to Bada in the beginning.
Samsung Wave is a pretty good smartphone.
The problem is, all of the apps SUCK!
For example:
Vuvuzelape(Vuvuzela's? WHAT?)
Mirror (just shows the output of the front camera, nothing else)
It has the capabilities of the iPhone and more, like bluetooth 3.0.
Heck, It even shares the same processor.
It has a super amoled screen, wich enables you to still see the screen from all angles and in direct sunlight.
As for the sensors:
Metal detector
GPS
Angle
movement speed
Landscape/portrait
I don't know if it counts as a sensor, but face recognition :P
The apps are written in C++.
The SDK is very similar to eclipse (They've made an agreement)
and is for Mac, PC and Linux.
Please, with such great technology jet no-one makes an actual GOOD app!
I'm thinking augmented reality, barcode scanner, QR code scanner, NES/SNES emulator etc.
...Please?
ANY WAY
I will buy your macs. Any irreverent posts to the topic will be dismissed
Any further interruptors will be Beated to death with their own pelvis
Also none of that master race heil pc's/macs
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
[editline]12:33AM[/editline]
Sounds...... Tasty, but I spent 1000 to go to prog camp and 100 on a book, so there's no turning back
Barcodes are unique to each and every manufacturer
^not funny alert
Just find an older iBook on eBay, it will cost around $300 or so.

Damn my 3:00 spelling
You do realize no one's just gonna up and offer a mac for sale right? Go on ebay or craigslist, not a fucking General Discussion subforum. For god's sake, at least go to the Mac forum

lol. sounds like you're ready for the $750 - $2000 investment.

What? Why does a phone need a metal detector?
Fucking READ THE ABOVE POSTS it's not like I'm gonna pull the next angry birds outta my ass I'm a student, but I've already done some obj-c and I need a Mac to do more.

sure, waste your money, buy a mac, or you could save money for something else and install OS X on your PC...
a student should waste their money on a Mac especially when they need their money for something else
unless you're a student who never leaves their home.
What? Why does a phone need a metal detector?
It's not a metal detector, it can sense if the phone's near a magnet. It's used so that people who make docks can put one in and it will go into a "dock mode", or "navigation mode" with simplified controls.
[editline]01:13AM[/editline]
You CAN make iphone apps on the PC.... I'm like 75% sure you can.
No, you can't compile xcode or whatever it is, for iOS on PCs.

Ahhh, no it's not. Docks have some logic in them so they can tell it's in a dock or a GPS sensor dock. You have to be kidding me, or did you really think they had a magnet in them to tell if it were in a dock?
No, you can't compile xcode or whatever it is, for iOS on PCs.
Yes you can make iPhone apps on PC, just don't expect them to get on the AppStore or to be particularly useful. You don't have access to the SDK so they're bound to be basic.

That's how it works on Android phones. Not really sure about iPhones, tbh. I can prove this by putting a magnet by my Droid.
Wow it really does have a magnetic detector.
Mind = blown at stupid design decisions.
Back to the topic, any links/selling them yourselves ?
You CAN make iphone apps on the PC.... I'm like 75% sure you can.
Apple restricts their SDK to mac only so unless you're going to make a hackintosh you need a mac.
Back to the topic, any links/selling them yourselves ?
NO. FP don't sell shit. Try ebay and go away.
I have found a aluminum fullbody laptop for 200, let's see you do better
then get it and shut up
