technically your body doesnt NEED sleep. There are other things you can do to get the same effect on your body rather than sleeping. The only reason we sleep is because our eyes are tired
This guy is a prime example of why your brain needs sleep.
I'm going to try one of those sleep cycles, because I'd love an extra two hours to my day! I remember working casual shifts and my body would nod off on the bus, only to have a microdream for about 20-30 seconds. It was actually quite interesting, but I never really pinned it on sleep deprivation.
So I'll try this for a few days and see how I go: (Although it is modified a litte, three hour gaps before my main sleep)
5am Wake
--- 8am (Work)
--- 6.30 (Nap)
--- 9.30 (Nap)
12.30am (Sleep)

Yeah but you're wrong.
Sleep allows the brain to to stop standard functions and thought processes and allows it to index memories and open up space in your short term memory for the next day, it's also when the body does running repairs on any damage it has sustained since the last sleep cycle.
How do people think sleep is just cause our eyes are worn out? that's what closing them is for, after about 3 billion years of evolution into advanced lifeforms there was a reason we evolved sleep, and kept it.

this man is a fucking expert. facepunch degree in sleep science. fuck yeah
I take ages to get to sleep, I don't feel like taking medication for it either.

I started crying at the end.

technically you dont NEED to eat. There are other things that can provide energy rather than eating. The only reason we eat is because you feel hungry.

technically this thread doesnt NEED you. There are other people who can create the same effect on the thread by posting fucking retarded stuff rather than you. The only reason you're making retarded posts is because you're bored.

Wow.
Just... Wow. I've lost all faith in humanity. (as if I hadn't when I first joined Facepunch.)
Sleeping less makes you seriously depressed and ruins your thinking ability(reflection center or something like that, Biology, Human Anatomy), so yes, sleep is essential, lots of sleep(9 - 11 hours) is recommended.
Also, very essential after sports since body muscles needs to be repaired, so while sleeping your nerves are paralyzed, giving time for body muscles to repair. Also, off-topic but eat food which has huge amounts of amino-acids, every type for muscles to restore faster.
History of sleep? What?

This, although I suppose the original post lacked cement. In particular, I'm hoping that we can exchange truths relating to how we can understand sleep (and their overlying process: dreams) and perhaps utilize them more effectively, and perhaps some of their properties in the conscious environment (e.g. for speed reading).
Sleep can make you lose weight
but not alot!

This thread can't really go much farther. That's why the Sleep and Dreams Megathread is there, so you can talk about everything.

That thread is abundant with dream entries - it's a bit tedious to find information pertaining with sleep science there (hence why I created this thread - perhaps a sub-forum would be most appropriate).
FYI, Polyphasic sleep is bad for you.

Maybe you should ask the question you're looking for the answer to?

There isn't a singular answer to the question, and the question establishes multiple sub-questions.

Everyone in there has time

Again, the thread is overly abundant to find information specifically pertaining with sleep science. For one to find any such info, they would be required to check every post of over 100 pages (possibly 1,000+ posts).
Awhile back I got interested in Irrational Games and their new projects coming up so I began to browse the site and listen to their podcasts. (Guys that made Bioshock and System Shock)
Around April 1,2010 they released Irrational Behavior Episode 4: Our Nerdiest Secrets ,the entire podcast centering around the 'nerd secretes' or 'dorky' habits that contributed somewhat to the developers sense of skill and development technique for the creation of games like Bioshock.
In Part 2 however one of the developers talk's of his experience with poly sleep and is what first got me interested in it myself.

for Part 2: Tired of Sleep
A key point that he mentioned is that he could get to sleep within minutes. Essentially he is not necessarily committed to the cycle throughout his life but once completed successfully he was no longer bound to the enslavement of his sleep time and could easily drop in and out of sleep without any form of alarm. One could infer from this that you do not have to dedicate your entire life to poly sleep in order to reap its benefits.
I think I'm going to try this myself one day. Would be valuable . Highly Valuable.

Also Question for Discussion:
Does listening to Music or Study Tapes stimulate any different forms of brain activity? Another words will listening to Bach as I drift into slumber make me function any better? Help the brain? Or is it just a waste of batter life on the ipod? Will listening to study tapes while in preparation for a big test magically aid me in getting an A on the final exam?
Some questions I'd like answered and would be interesting/informative to know.
I got slee paralysis 3 times in a row I was fully conscious.
I saw a lil gray brain on my fat Jesus poster it was weird I couldn't move (just like I couldnt in the other thread about sleep)
Also try lieing on your back, I was so tired from weights and I had one eye closed and one eye open when it occured.
found it.
Tagged for hugeness.

I think I'd rather follow the natural sleep cycle than what words on a JPEG says.
Although what it says are grounded and well evidenced, I don't want to take any chances.
