Granted the films they are copied from are foreign, but nonetheless they are still remakes, and they are great ones at that.
Hollywood does have a tendency to ruin a good film, but there are many many exceptions to that theory.
I hate Sam Raimi, he completely ruined what was once Spider-man for me, and it's all because he's a selfish bitch. He cried about having to add Venom to the third film because he doesn't like Venom which was a totally idiotic move.
Spider-man 1: Good
Spider-man 2: Great
Spider-man 3: Shitty with more awkwardness
I watched both, The day the earth stood still and thought the remake was good.

The thing had the best special effects ever. I fuckin loved the The thing as a kid. I was just amazed by the monster dog effect was just amazing still today.
When they're done right, they work, but they'll always suffer from being compared to the original.
