I can make out a bit of a lip in that white spot on the face, and given the new amounts of white on the top I'd say that's the brim/shadow of a hat.

The little white part at the top of the current image is the top side of the brim, which I also circled. The border of the brim is lost somewhere in the shadow.

That's pretty much what I was going for. But it's hard to convey that when you only have sharp contrasts of white and black to choose from.

I can sort of distinguish the last letter as an "N" though.

does sound a lot like they're watching a security camera. either that or he's really paranoid about the stuff on TV - maybe because they relied heavily on code during the mission, which would tie nicely into that PTSD theory someone suggested
