I felt near the end that Near was just too damn knowing. Sure, L's thoughts and estimations were a little far fetched but they were plausible at the same time. When Near had his guesses, it was out of his smart ass. They basically wanted to put the series to an end at that point.
Been just rewatching the series, and I'm at episode 24, which in my opinion is the best in the series.

I still think is a bad ending (The way [sp]he dies is just pathetic. Even Matsuda was killing him off[/sp]) and it would be MUCH BETTER if [sp]Light turned into a Shinigami after dying. That would make the ending much more interesting and would fix some loose ends, mainly because it's never made clear how the hell are Shinigamis created: they can die and they cannot reproduce, so the possibility of Death Note users becoming Shinigamis after dying makes sense[/sp]

Finished watching it yesterday and it was pretty good.
Although after reading that a dozen of people got arrested for making their own death notes and writing down classmates names and such I knew that the fan base is retarded and probably filled to the brim with scene/emo kids.
