Any good not-so-well-known movies?
Any good not-so-well-known movies?
any particular style? I don't want to recommend you something you might freak out about.
Hugo, 5/10 A loveletter to film, lacking any real plot and proper direction. Hugo felt like a secondary character to the plot, and the main one wasn't fleshed out enough with an unexplained nonsensical character shift halfway through. The best thing about the film was Sacha Baron Cohen. a very forgettable film whose only trait was begging to be admired and remembered as an artist [editline]19th February 2012[/editline]
saw "the artist". 8/10. it was clever, entertaining, and well acted but lacked any real substance.
agreed. it was a nice spectacle and it was something different, but there ultimately was very little substance to it and it wasn't very memorable. basically it was a gimmick [editline]19th February 2012[/editline] both of these movies felt like oscar bait [editline]19th February 2012[/editline] both films feel like they're too busying paying respect and homage to films of the past, without doing anything to make them a good film of the present
without doing anything to make them a good film of the present
Haven't seen Hugo, but the fact that in our time something has been made to pay homage, is a tribute in itself. although I kind of agree in that watching it makes you realise how similar it is to the silent movies in that era. maybe that's the point though who knows.
But being a tribute isn't enough for the movie to be good [editline]19th February 2012[/editline] The style of the film is the tribute, the story is seriously lacking
any particular style? I don't want to recommend you something you might freak out about.
I love just about anything. Favorites are sci-fi/action/romance.
The style of the film is the tribute, the story is seriously lacking
yeah but since when did Silent Movies have a truly in-depth story. Think about it. [editline]19th February 2012[/editline]
I love just about anything. Favorites are sci-fi/action/romance.
watch Dark City.
yeah but since when did Silent Movies have a truly in-depth story. Think about it.
why does that make a difference? it just means the very idea of a modern silent film is flawed, if you don't elevate it to transcend the story of a classical silent film then what's the point? being an homage doesn't excuse having a bad story - if I wanted a silent film with a classic silent film story, I'd watch an old silent film. there's really no reason at all it couldn't have had a much better story. it would still have been playing an homage to silent films. it would just be a better modern film too. [editline]19th February 2012[/editline] no excuses

That dream sequence for example. That's the part where you feel removed from the entire experience of the homage, and imagine that being a 30 minute scene. Destroys the movie.
watch Dark City.
I have.

The story doesn't have to be COMPLEX to be good. (drive drive drive) Just a better story, that's all. It wouldn't ruin the homage at all.
One Day - 8.5/10 Mother of God...
Are you kidding? The story doesn't have to be COMPLEX to be good. (drive drive drive) Just a better story, that's all. I personally thought the fact that it gave me an authentic classic silent movie experience to be well worthy.
Come in seeing 19 new posts, expecting to see a film i may want to watch, see rusty and AK'z having a discussion on a single films merits. Could anyone recommend a relatively easy watch film that's dramatic enough to get you interested? (thinking along the lines of the prestige)
I love just about anything. Favorites are sci-fi/action/romance.
I know I'm a bit late on this, but try Andrei Tarkovskiy's Stalker. Its my favorite movie of all time.
That's a long shot to recommend. If it's anything like Solaris, you have to tell them that it's a slow absorbing movie.
Never. Surprises are much more enjoyable.
The Artist 8/10 very nice :) man, i'm a sucker for original movies. meaning that weren't book, or games, or w/e [editline]19th February 2012[/editline] i agree it seemed like oscar bait lol
The Secret World of Arriety : All-of-my-tears 9/10 Kiki's delivery Service. : 8.7/10 Felt like there were too many characters but it does work itself out.
We Need To Talk About Kevin - 9/10 Most depressing movie I have seen in a while
The Other Conquest - 7/10... A movie that I've been really wanting to see, finally got my hands on it. A story about the Aztecs after being conquered by Spain. Unfortunately, it's hampered down by a somewhat lackluster plot and some meh acting. The cinematography and music make up for it though.
We Need To Talk About Kevin - 9/10 Most depressing movie I have seen in a while
I thought it was really stupid, almost comedic, how the kid behaved.
Twelve Monkeys (1995) 8/10 May be a slight bias here since I really like movies that deal with any sort of time travel and this one did in a fairly interesting way.
I thought it was really stupid, almost comedic, how the kid behaved.
Well I thought it was amazingly realistic concerning how his mother treated him when he was young.
Harry Brown - 8/10.
Well I thought it was amazingly realistic concerning how his mother treated him when he was young.
lol its the least realistic movie ever.
Fantastic Mr. Fox (only caught the last half, quite apt now that I think about it) 7.5/10 The animation really put me off at first but the story was enjoyable and the voice acting was great. I also thought the soundtrack worked very well, the chorus of whispers in some songs built tension suitably and "Canis Lupus" which I had already heard outside of the film works even better in context.
lol its the least realistic movie ever.
i haven't even seen the movie and it looks like you're spewing crap.
i haven't even seen the movie and it looks like you're spewing crap.
The kid is basically portrayed as a super villain. While he is a toddler.
