Just watched The Prestige again, starts with magic and goes somewhere amazing with it. You wouldn't expect just how well written it is from the trailers. 8/10
The most pretentious movie I've seen recently has to be "Elephant". Yeah, that movie that everyone seems to love about the school shooting.
Honestly, I know what it was trying to be. Pretty much a re-telling of the Columbine shooting with different character names and a different school, which is a ballsy enough move on its own, but I can respect what the Gus Van Sant wanted to do. Make a great movie about a very touchy subject.
The fact of the matter is, 70% of the movie is just the camera following someone walk for several minutes at a time. It never leads to anything. Why include it? The good stuff in the movie is REALLY good, but it just came off as pretentious to me.
i liked it. i cold-watched it, didn't know much about it, didn't see reviews, trailers, hype etc. all i knew was that it was supposed to be an artsy film. i didn't get the impression it was pretentious.
i thought the tension and atmosphere was intense, instead of it just being walking (kind of like Drive but with less action). i like how it reviewed the event from different points of view.
Over a span of the last few months, in no order:
Last Temptation of Christ - 10/10. I don't understand all the religious controversy surrounding this. I mean I do, because it deviates from scripture, but it's still a very respectful portrayal of Jesus. That aside, it's beautifully filmed, and full of great actors like Willem DaFoe, Harvey Kietel, Harry Dean Stanton, so on. Recommend it to anyone, religious or otherwise.
Big Trouble in Little China - 8.5/10. A lot less cheesy than I remembered it being, and I got an altogether fun and hilarious action flick. Also, I love it when John Carpenter scores his own movies. Unlike most 80's synth soundtracks, his soundtracks age surprisingly well.
The Lost World: Jurassic Park - 8/10. I hesitate to say this, but I like this just a little bit better than the first one. I know there are some shallow characters, but the way it's filmed just stuns me. The 2nd act in particular, [sp] Beginning with the trailer over the cliff and ending with the protagonists narrowly escaping the worker village in the helicopter [/sp]. How the whole part seems like it's lit only by moonlight, and most people are seen as silhouettes. Most of it's nostalgia, but there's something I really love about this movie that I can't put my finger on.

tbh Lars' films aren't for everyone.
His films are beautifully depressive and that either gets to you or resonates well.

Public Enemies
5/10
After hearing a lot about the movie, I felt terribly dissapointed by it. I could not really enjoy it at all. There are so many things that are bad. My main gripe is the pacing of the movie, everything happens to fast and without any explanations. New characters are constantly introduced, without any proper developement whatsoever. The different scences just pass one by one without any proper break. The fast pacing makes the movie really boring, there is no real suspense or tension that keeps you hooked the whole time.
There was no vibe to this movie at all, I really liked the outfits and costumes but Micheal Mann failed to delivery the whole time era, I do not know why but the whole movie feels empty. I found the music horribly generic and the camera work really bad.
The characters seemed so bland and uninteresting, they were one dimensional and flat. Although the acting was pretty solid.
The only thing that I liked were the shootouts, Mann is really good at making them. They feel pretty real and look great. Also the prison escape was quite amazing.
But for the rest I feel like the movie is just a bunch of scences clashing together, followed by shootouts. Also most of the time I was confused by the characters and what is actually happening.

The most interesting aspect in this movie were the suits and clothing, they looked neat.

Has anyone seen Killing Them Softly?

yeah it's all good and stuff
Taxi Driver
This movie is quite a mystery to me and I think I did not fully understand it. The whole plot is a bit confusing to me, was Travis so fed up with this world and all the filth that he planned to kill some pimps and mobsters? I do not understand why we have this emphasis on Palastine and the whole campaign. There seems to be more than the obvious theme of crime, cruelty and prostitution. The isolation of lack of social contacts is also pretty well shown, Travis is a troubled man.
The acting was really great, De Niro portrayed the character so well. The whole city felt dark and gritty, it was pretty dark and I felt uncomfortable the whole movie. The music was really good and I liked it a lot. It was smooth but yet sad. The pacing was really slow and I have not figured it out yet. The last scene was damn brutal, a slaughter.

saw it a second time today.
its a very subtle and simple movie really. and has really good acting
Pin (1988) - 8/10
plot synopsis: A schizophrenic and socially awkward hipster scares guests with a mannequin and writes poems about raping his sister. This movie is weird, and really creepy, especially if you have pediophobia like me. It's also quite similar to Hitchcock's Psycho with the way it deals with the "antagonist". I looked it up especially because it had mannequins, and they scare me shitless. Overall good psycological horror, I recommend it.
End of Watch - 10/10!
Incredible movie. It was a little bit difficult to get into it at first and I actually felt that many parts could've been removed. But by the end of the movie I knew that everything that I though 'could've been removed', was actually necessary. The movie was able to show the friendship between the two officers and it had a very powerful ending.
A must see movie.
a beautiful mind was like the whitest movie i've ever watched, and it felt way too long. there were like four different scenes where i thought it was going to end right there. the twist is out of nowhere and doesn't really feel all that natural or engaging compared to something like fight club or shutter island, which i'd watched recently too for comparison.
its literally the definition of oscar bait
Hm, Heat or Casino?

I have to disagree to some extent. There are some movies that really don't fit the criteria you'd extrapolate from other nominations, Winters Bone for example. Really great movie.
watched Heat the other night. Pretty good crime movie. Kinda reminds me of 'The Town. ' A good classic.

Even though I agree with most of this, it's still an enjoyable film. You can't just sit there and think "oscar bait, oscar bait".
Saving Private Ryan. 9/10.
Excellent movie. The translator kid was best character IMO. If he died, the movie would have started sucking major ass. -200/10

Life of Pi
8/10
Re watched black hawk down.
10/10
I rate it so highly not just because of how well it was told, but the production. It create a great feel for me as a viewer allowing me to get even more immersed with the film. Its one of those gems that will be around for many future generations to watch. Great film!
Anyone can recommend a good thriller with fighting scenes here and there? Something in the form of Ip man!
