Night Falls Over Manhattan 7/10 I like it. For some reason it reminded me of "Brooklyn's Finest" although Night Falls came first. Probably because it deals with the whole NewYork-Police-Corruption deal too. And it does so very well but it needs attention. A few negative points would be some of the actors and characters. Andy Garcia is a bit too charismatic. His character is a bit stiff, not in the sense of the story, he deals with a lot of difficult stuff and it's very nice to watch him react to seeing his ideals shattered but he is too perfect. Too charismatic. Too idealistic for no reason. So as much as the movie avoids the classical movie villain, it could've avoided the classical idealistic hero but it didn't. The movie uses this though and it most revealingly showed in a scene where Sean is disgusted by a corrupt cop and shruggs away when the cop tries to touch him. Nice details. Ian Holm is just not the hard boiled cop he tries to portrait but he works so there's that. James Gandolfini does a great job and he shows an almost Spacey-like quality in some scenes. Almost too perfect for the role he plays as you can see his development coming from miles away(because he plays it so good). Watch it.
Real Steel: 8/10 A good family movie with fantastic special effects and sound design, let down a bit by some spotty acting and relying too heavily on cliche at times. Not a classic, but a good time and a surprisingly decent redemption story.
I agree with you there. It kind of feels like a cheesy '80s underdog/father-figure--son-figure/sports movie at times, but it never got that bad. For the first half-hour or so I just wanted to see angry drunk Hugh Jackman drive his fightin' robots around, but after a while I warmed up to the kid (who thankfully wasn't full-on Jake Lloyd). The effects and designs on the robots were fantastic and I really wanted to see more of that. [sup]To be honest, I thought the worst thing about the movie was the product placement. For a movie set 10 years in the future, none of the logos (Dr. Pepper, XBox, etc) have changed at all. That broke my suspension of disbelief.[/sup]
Moneyball - 8.5/10 now that ive seen it a second time i can say with certainty that this movie is magic
Watched quite a few crime movies recently: Collateral - 8.5/10 Jamie Foxx's a good actor, and I didn't find Tom Cruise annoying for once. Story was pretty good, and I just really love Michael Mann's style (and attention to detail when it comes to dealing with firearms stuff). Very tense. I kinda felt like the plotline with that detective with a ponytail was cut short, ending that in this way just felt wrong. Otherwise, a great movie. Training Day - 9/10 Both Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington were just absolutely amazing in their roles. The moment where Hawke's character finally snapped felt really powerful, and the scene in Alonso's flat was just wonderfully tense. Got a chuckle out of seeing Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, too. :v: Didn't really like the coincidence that saved Hawke's character's ass, though. Seemed just too unrealistic. (I know that all that was thought up by Alonso on the fly ["Make sure the tub's clean!"], but it still just felt off for some reason.) Scarface - 9.5/10 Lives up to its reputation as a classic crime drama movie. The moment where Montana realized just how much did he screw everything up was great, I loved the little music cues that appeared whenever Tony was about to pull something psychopathic, and the soundtrack in general was just great. Also, "Say hello to my little friend!" Gon' watch Goodfellas next, been meaning to watch this movie for a long time now.
Cloud Atlas - 8/10 Very engaging, you must watch it with subs on.
you must watch it with subs on.
meh, i prefer experiencing a film for the first time without subs unless it's foreign obviously.. much more natural imo. Are you suggesting this because of dialects?
Dude, Goodfellas is so fucking amazing that it's mind-blowing. Easily in my top 5 favorite movies ever.
Yeah, heard it was really good, plus I'm really into mafia themed stuff, so I can't wait to watch it.
John Dies at the End 5/10. Some cool ideas but ultimately way too harebrained and narratively weak and confusing. Excision 8/10. Gruesome, uncomfortable, and stellar performances, with a neat payoff.
My Way 8/10 I was surprised to see how shitty the reviews were but I didn't think it was that bad..
Does John actually die at the end?
[sp] iirc he dies at some point in the middle and you don't know it until the end or something. [/sp]
oh
Does John actually die at the end?
I fuckin couldn't even tell dude. I don't even recall him dying at all. One time he is a dog though.
The Innkeepers 6/10 While the movie was overall enjoyable, I felt the story had no depth to it. The characters were given little to no backstory, so the viewer was left with no attachment, and when the story finally starts to pick up, it abruptly ends with no explanation as to what or why.
I live in the town that movie was filmed in. It's about the Yankee Peddler Inn in Torrington CT. I've been in the building many times, the basement, the attic. I'm close friends with the owner and they let me pretty much come and go as I please. When I first visited the basement, I found a bunch of electrical boxes, one of which was labeled with my last name. I was pretty freaked out, but then I learned that my great uncle owned a shop attached to the building, and he owned the box a while back. I couldn't continue through the rest of the basement due to this awful smell emitting from a dark hallway which I dared not enter. The hotel itself is actually extremely creepy because it's usually empty, it draws a lot of attention from ghost hunters. I actually met a team of ghost hunters and they invited me on their expedition across the country to visit many haunted places. I respectfully declined but they were still pretty cool. They showed me a bunch of their equipment and some footage they've taken. The attic... Well.. Yankee Peddler Inn, Torrington, CT.
i really liked the innkeepers it is a solid movie
Struck By Lightning - 9/10 I was surprised I actually liked it so much. But it was a really good movie. And that ending... omg... that was seriously depressing :(
I'm going to talk about the one time I ever experienced clapping in a cinema(and high-pitched squealing and giggling) It was 2 years ago and I was going to watch RED with my dad, so we were queuing up for tickets when this godawful asshole cuts the queue in front of us, so I ask him, "Sir, would you mind?" And then his reply was certainly out of the ordinary, he said, "Why do you want an autograph?" Then I realised it was a famous local actor, a Mr Tay Ping Hui, ugrings from other people in the queue could not get him to move to the back and wait his turn. Long story short, me and my dad got out tickets and then we went into the cinema, guess who I found seated beside me? Around ten minutes in, the kill-team comes for Bruce Willis, when Mr Tay begins hyperventilating, like he's so awfully excited, like a kid opening his christmas presents(this is a poor analogy, I don't celebrate Christmas) Then a bit further in, John Malkovich apppears at his hideout and then Mr Tay begins fucking clapping, CLAP CLAP CLAP About halfway into the movie, when fucking Malkovich shoots the rocket mid-flight, he begins squealing, the best descriptions would be a sound akin to what a dog with a chewtoy stuck down his throat sounds like(Snatch.) A lot of incoherent laughing and squealing later, we arrive at the part where Malkovich arrives at his personal armoury, lifts a Swedish K Submachine Gun and then, IT STARTS AGAIN, Mr Tay starts clapping, laughing and squealing all at the same time, holy shit, what's so funny, is he laughing at the gun, or is he laughing at the Swedish? I guess I'll never know I suppose you can guess what Mr Tay was doing as Helen Mirren opened up with a M2 Machine Gun on those Secret Service agents. At this point, people behind me were urging Mr Tay to shut up. Then movie ends, YEAHHHH YEAAAHHHH more clapping Seriously, man, I have never seen anyone behave like that and never want to again. I can understand clapping at the end and the start, but throughout the movie? Summary: I got my movie experience for RED ruined by this guy THIS GUY
There's a reason why our local television and movies WILL STAY FUCKING SHIT FOREVER.
Pitch Perfect 7.5/10 Pretty great teen movie. I'm a sucker for these types of movies, so chalk it up to that, but I enjoyed watching this flick. Wouldn't mind it if this was the direction teen movies are heading!
Tron Legacy 6 out of 10 Music was great, but not much else was.
Lars and the real girl - 7.5/10 good performance by ryan gosling
Lincoln 7/10
Courier Deliciously C grade. 6/10
Quantum of Solace 3/10 The worst Bond movie for me, personally Bad dialogue, terrible villains, odd pacing that doesn't fit a Bond movie, a dumb way of suddenly cutting off quiet scenes with a loud action scene, unexciting sets, dull cinematography and dreadful editing However, the only good things One star for Craig's performance (my favorite of his) One for the fight in Siena One for the finale in the desert hotel
Excision 8/10

Mad Max: rustylovesitwhenpeopleratemoviesthisway/10 [editline]2nd January 2013[/editline] Seriously though, I didn't really like it.
Dances with Wolves, Extended Cut 86/100 Beautifully filmed, great acting and script. One of the few things I did not like was the voice-over monologues from Costner; they felt strained and out of place. There was also some other acting from Costner and McDonell (Stands With A Fist) that felt the same, but I guess they are both hard parts to act. Regardless of that, a great movie. I particularly liked the photography in this movie more than anything else. I was surprised to find out it was so well shot :)
