Irreversible (2002) This is the second watch after a few years with the only friend who was willing to give it a spin. The notoriety is well deserved as the brutal scenes are graphic and uncompromising but its not just a shocker, theres artistic genius here. The film is a collection of scenes where on each scene the camera doesn't cut making you feel like you are actually in the film and part of it. The sound and movement of the camera is aggessive when the panic, anger and drama are high and lighter when the scenes dictate, giving the experience much varied flavour. The film starts with the final part of the story and goes backwards, allowing the viewer to see the reasons for the actions of the characters in the previous act. The performances are top notch with Monicia Bellucci giving the best I've seen from her and Vincent Cassel firing on all cylinders. The dialog between the 3 main characters is funny, uncomforatable and enlightening. Gaspar Noe has sort of set himself up with something thats going to be hard to follow and he just about got away with it making 'Into the Void. Where can he go next when he has this very distinctive style of storytelling? We will see. I strongly recommend this film but add a warning that the content is extreme but just adds to the realistic delivery of this masterpiece. Breathtaking! Edit: Just btw, I've whined about this before. Theres a slew of posters just giving film/rating and its getting rather boring. I might be posting a bit tldr but we're better than this. We come here to give and draw on each others experiences.
Flight 7.5/10 I liked that the heavy stuff, the crash, came first and the character centered stuff afterwards, it gives the movie a really nice structure. I also liked their encounter with the cancer patient a lot, it's a bit like he says "the people look at you as if you have all the answers" and in the movie sense, he really had Some stuff I didn't like was John Goodmans character, it was unnecessarily goofy and out of place, maybe they wanted to lighten up the atmosphere a bit but to me it just looked forced and out of place. Many people criticize the ending for being too tasteful and blunting the message about the alcoholism but this movie didn't want to shock so yeah, fuck that, the ending was good. Would absolutely recommend.
It IS called "RATE the last movie you watched" Not "review"
It IS called "RATE the last movie you watched" Not "review"
I know you are gunning for me but unless I fuck up and start acting like a dick on here then I'm here to stay and you'll just have to deal with that. Taking your comment literally that would mean 247 pages of film/rating. Lets not get personal on here comrade, I made my peace with the mods and I extend my benevolence towards you now so accept that and move on.
It IS called "RATE the last movie you watched" Not "review"
One should back up their ratings....
dredd 8/10 i don't know, maybe it's just me but i don't like how [sp] they removed the possibility of anderson being tortured when ma-ma told em so, i dont know it just felt a bit eh after that. no sense of danger at all and you know dredd is just going to kick their asses anyway. like, there's no sense of immediacy. or im just rambling some shit [/sp] w/e it was still pretty cool and i dont know if its only because ive seen someone else said it but i also like how anderson is not useless, at all
I thought Irreversible was a piece of shit, more of an overlong music-free music video than a legitimate film. It felt more concerned with bombing the viewer with kooky camera tricks and unpleasant imagery than it was with actually doing anything of depth. The only part of the movie which I found genuinely chilling was when [sp]during the rape scene, that one person walks into the underpass, realizes what is going on and quietly backs out the same way he/she came from[/sp], because it was the only moment which felt real and human and genuinely smart, the rest of it I found have about as much substance as the average Farelly brothers film, only more smug and far more full of itself. And that ending is just... ugh. Not only is it immensely predictable and lazy, it was utterly smug and forced. OOOOH DID WE SHOCK YOU WE SHOCKED YOU DIDN'T WE BET YOU DIDN'T SEE THAT ONE COMING, only it was visible from a mile away. Michael Haneke's Funny Games suffered from a lot of the same problems, but at least that movie was aware of its own pointlessness and came from a place of genuine moral outrage, whereas Irreversible just came off as yet another case of "I The Artist" self-masturbation. Not to mention that, for a run-of-the-mill French, "intelligent art film"-type thing, Irreversible had far more in common with the run-of-the-mill American "dumb action movie"-type thing.
One should back up their ratings....
Ratings are dumb, what the fuck does an 8/10 mean? Everyone's 8/10 is different
Ratings are dumb, what the fuck does an 8/10 mean? After all, no one wants to read two hundreds pages of : Twilight 10/10 A part of me thinks that he just wants people to place arbitrary numbers regarding movies that he really loves or hates just so he can bash and berate them and rate them dumb.

I liked the fact that the camera didn't cut in each scene and that the intensity of the camera tricks were dependant on what was going on. Some of the scenes were about 15 minutes long and quite complicated so to get a scene like that in a continous take must have took a lot of work and prep when you consider the way the camera moves around the characters and interacts with the things they do. Interesting you bring up Haneke as he is the polar opposite of Gaspar Noe in the sense that he is subtle and Noe is far from it. I respectfully disagree but your post was well articulated and for that I heil you comrade.
The Imposter - 9/10 A 22 year old french guy successfully convinces an american family that he is their 16 year old son who disappeared at the age of 13. It's exactly as interesting as it sounds. Searching for Sugar Man - 7/10 It was pretty interesting for the most part but some of it was painfully dull.
Martha Marcy May Marlene Credits to AK'z for finding this one. What a great film, very understated but absorbing. A girls story of her past told in tandem with her present and the place its put her in. Not really worth giving any more away so I'll end it with good performances from all the cast in a solid film. Anyone liking this should check out a film called 'Holy Smoke' with Kate Winslet and Harvey Keitel from director Jane Campion.

city of god 8.5/10 lil z is a fucking BASTARD
Chernobyl Diaries, really bad. 1/10
I did not understand why the director went with an ambiguous ending to that movie.
Well was it? [sp]The end suggested the cult leader is coming back for her but I took it that her paranoia had got the better of her and it was in her head.[/sp] Ambiguous endings or unanswered questions can be frustrating but in this case I didn't think a definitive answer to the end was essential. You are right tho, a couple of interpretations could be drawn. The Imposter is next on my list from your post tho thanks.
The Imposter is a documentary btw, completely true.
It IS called "RATE the last movie you watched" Not "review"
I like to back up my rating with a paragraph of what I liked/disliked from said film, sometimes I do stretch it on too long. I'll admit that when I've posted previously in this thread, but to be honest if I posted my thoughts elsewhere no one would read it. Also, sometimes I don't find that ratings can justify specific films, and rather a simple recommendation could be sufficient.

I have never hunted a film down from a simple title/rating but have found some great movies from some of the comments comrades have left here. Content is king!

The Pirates! I give it a 7/10 although I would've loved to give it more, everything about that movie is wonderfull except the speech-driven jokes and the story. Awesome slapstick, an attention to detail in animation I have never seen before, not even in Coraline, a colourful and interesting setting, crude, likeable characters and yet the story is mediocre and the whole movie kinda feels like it was intended to jumpstart a triology or something, it always feels like they held back something and it best shows with the character of the really curvy pirate. Anyway, it is an awesome watch and fun all together so go watch it!

Nah a lot of bitching goes on towards people simply because they like a movie you don't. And by you I mean a lot of people.
Ah well lets stay on topic is my suggestion. I watched "Misery" a while back because I wondered why it was making such a fuzz in the Oscars back then. It's a good movie but not more than a 7/10. I guess a lot of its quality is the kind of "psychotic woman" portrayal that was just not done until back then and nowadays we are used to that quality of acting so the "magic" doesn't work on us. A shame. Nowadays it's also one of the less know Stephen King movies and I can tell you it's one of the better ones.

Sometimes it's good to call bullshit on posters but if you over do it you can sound like a yappy dog barking round peoples ankles. I had to learn the hard way, now I'm a lover not a fighter. Much love.
Nah a lot of bitching goes on towards people simply because they like a movie you don't. And by you I mean a lot of people.
lol ok
Stand Up Guys 5/10 Not terrible, but a fairly pointless hour and a half of three old guys just driving around. [sp]And they killed off Alan Arkin's character 20 minutes after he's introduced, which sucks for fans of his[/sp]
Skyfall 7/10 It was beautifully shot but it went by in such a blur, it just felt like a bunch of great set pieces strung together by a thread
The Door in the Floor (2004) - 7/10. Gonna have to watch that one again. Wouldn't have watched it in the first place if it wasn't for Jeff Bridges. Watchmen (2009) - 6/10. Who the fuck chose the soundtrack for this film jesus christ. "The Sound of Silence" over [sp]The Comedian's[/sp] funeral; "The Times They are a-Changin" in the intro; and a whole bunch of stupid music choices. The whole film felt exactly like a comic book movie, but the comic book itself doesn't feel like that at all. (Kind of like how The Dark Knight doesn't feel like a comic book movie despite being based on a comic book). A lot of the themes are lost in adapting the series to the screen, which is something to expect, but the film feels so hollow without the deconstruction of super heroes, the motifs; (Nostalgia perfume, the shadow of the lovers in a kiss, Tales of the Black Freighter, Dan's essay on owls, etc.) to the point where I wonder why the hell this movie was made. There's so MUCH more wrong with this film I could write a goddamn essay about it. Though I am glad they kept issue 4 almost entirely in tact, and liked how menacing [sp]Dr. Manhattan felt when he confronts Veidt near the end, whereas in the comic he felt pretty lax.[/sp]
Silver linings playbook (2012) 9/10 Brilliant story and cheery ending cheered me up after a shit day

It was that bad? I haven't seen it though, just asking for you to elaborate, since I am considering seeing it
