I use IMDB a lot because the rating are by the public and theres some good recommendations on there. Sometimes I have a look through the lists of fav films but its always the same 100 movies with very little to offer. This list however delivers a great deal of diversity and theres a pile of well rated films I've never even heard of. Theres a good chunk of world cinema and hollywood blockbusters.
The Door in the Floor (2004) - 7/10. Gonna have to watch that one again. Wouldn't have watched it in the first place if it wasn't for Jeff Bridges. Watchmen (2009) - 6/10. Who the fuck chose the soundtrack for this film jesus christ. "The Sound of Silence" over [sp]The Comedian's[/sp] funeral; "The Times They are a-Changin" in the intro; and a whole bunch of stupid music choices. The whole film felt exactly like a comic book movie, but the comic book itself doesn't feel like that at all. (Kind of like how The Dark Knight doesn't feel like a comic book movie despite being based on a comic book). A lot of the themes are lost in adapting the series to the screen, which is something to expect, but the film feels so hollow without the deconstruction of super heroes, the motifs; (Nostalgia perfume, the shadow of the lovers in a kiss, Tales of the Black Freighter, Dan's essay on owls, etc.) to the point where I wonder why the hell this movie was made. There's so MUCH more wrong with this film I could write a goddamn essay about it. Though I am glad they kept issue 4 almost entirely in tact, and liked how menacing [sp]Dr. Manhattan felt when he confronts Veidt near the end, whereas in the comic he felt pretty lax.[/sp]
Aw come on, "The Times They Are-a-Changin" was perfectly used and in the spirit of the film, it fit pretty well. I agree with pretty much everything else though, despite being a nigh scene-for-scene adaptation... they managed to miss the point entirely while needlessly omitting some great stuff. And then there's the unnecessarily long fight sequences and sex scenes. The Director's Cut adds a few things but disappointingly not enough, the addition of the Tales of the Black Freighter interspersed into the film is what makes it so much longer really... feels like padding really, especially since it feels a bit unnatural the way they did it. But, overall, I don't know I still really enjoyed the film and I gotta say that they did nail the aesthetics. And really, it was just my overall desire to see Watchmen as a film that has me unable to hate it. Maybe some day, it'll get another adaptation but I don't want one, in all honesty. This was a nice enough attempt.
White Tiger- Belyy tigr 2012 Russian Movie 6.5/10 Pros Tank action is great Nice Atmosphere Cons Story is like someone skimmed through Moby Dick, wrote half the script based on what he understood by that skimming through, then finished up the other half of the script after skimming through Blood Meridian I mean it gets to straight up ripping lines, i.e Hitler says "War is God." in his closing monolgue, which is a line from Blood Meridian All the mysticism and stuff (Apparently there is a Tank God) The Tiger is eternal like Moby Dick and Judge Holden, this makes no sense, it's a machine, with a crew and shit Why would the Russians bother to use an up-armoured T-34/85 to hunt a Tiger. I mean the White Tiger is like the biggest pain in the ass they have ever had, wouldn't they want to use an IS-2 or maybe a whole bunch of them. Seriously the Tiger can pull of 1 shot in 5 sec and it's armour is insane, it knocks over at least 15 tanks per encounter, wouldn't you want to use something or rather somethings better? And don't use the argument that maybe they couldn't find an IS-2 for the movie, the White Tiger is a mock-up made from an IS-2 and there are atl least 2 IS-2's present in one scene Hitler has Blond Hair and Blue Eyes
I can't stand superhero films but the Watchmen really got its hooks in me. If you're a fan of the comics before the film I guess that might raise expectations or demand a closer connection to the original format but as a movie goer having no previous experience with this title, I loved it. The sex scenes were too long???? Wtf..... Is that possible?
I take it you've not seen caligula jewdozer
I take it you've not seen caligula jewdozer
What do you think of my oak floor comrade? I decided not to go for that cheap ass laminate shit but had the whole lot ripped up so I could put solid German oak floorboards down. I went with a satin finish so it doesn't show the scratches. Feed your builders tea and bacon sandwiches and they will work very hard and very well. I'm really pleased with it.
very nice i am a fan of oak anyway i just said that because you said there's no such thing as too much sex in a film and its kinda ridiculous in that its not even needed
very nice i am a fan of oak anyway i just said that because you said there's no such thing as too much sex in a film and its kinda ridiculous in that its not even needed
But thats a film about the debauchery and excess of Rome which was its eventual downfall. The sex was every type of fetish without limits because they were at the zenith of what human development allowed them and the god syndrome had taken hold. Parallels have been drawn of the west in modern times where our morals have hit rock bottom because of our financial wealth, materialism and military power. Not suggesting I agree with that but its been one observation put forwarcds.
Terminator 2 - 10/10 seeing it for the first time :'(
terminator 2 is one of the few times where the sequel is better than the first empire was better than a new hope for another, and an underrated one in this kinda thing is mad max 2. first is great but fuck, road warrior is one of the best fucking films ever made. thunderdome Is good too but not quite as good as the first 2
Hitman What the fuck was that shit. Awful movie that should have never been made also The Organization, really?
Nightclaws what a fucking travesty for a hyped up new Reb Brown movie
terminator 2 is one of the few times where the sequel is better than the first empire was better than a new hope for another, and an underrated one in this kinda thing is mad max 2. first is great but fuck, road warrior is one of the best fucking films ever made. thunderdome Is good too but not quite as good as the first 2
spiderman 2 evil dead 2 predator 2 (ha ha just kidding predator 2 sucks)
I remember I started watching Predator 2 but stopped as soon as I saw a city. Which is literally the second it starts. Does it pick up from there?
lol forgot about ed2. one of my favourite films as well. past few days ive seen- bullet to the head- 6.5/10. I never do half ratings but 6 felt too low and 7 too high. decent just about sums up everything to do with it, nothing particularly bad but nothing hugely stand out. better than most films of its type. zero dark thirty- 5/10 literally the only good thing about this movie was Jessica chastain who delivered a really good performance. it picked ip a lot when the house got involved but the actual climax fucking suuucked. such a huge missed opportunity for a great ending to an overall sub par film. o well, fuck you Kathryn bigelow thats two shit war films in a row! drillbit taylor - 7/10 some great comedy here, Owen Wilson delivers a solid and interesting performance as usual with a surprisingly engaging plot, a mostly teenage cast deliver good performances. blade runner- 8/10 second time seeing this, first time I was like 14 though so I didnt like it very much due to being slow and having a small scale plot. loved it this time though. the world is great, special effects were fantastic- if this came out now I'd not complain about them, hugely impressive for being 31 years old. bad lieutenant: port of call new Orleans- 8/10 another brilliant performance by nicolas cage, he as always gives it his absolute all and goes all out. always been a fan of his and even in his weaker films he still carries them. good plot, interesting view on the greyness of good and evil, blackly funny throughout as well. great movie.
Goon - 7.5/10 Not a fan of hockey, but I really enjoyed it. Seann William Scott's best performance so far.
Django Unchained 35mm - 8/10 A+ casting.
predator 2 owned fuck the haters
I remember I started watching Predator 2 but stopped as soon as I saw a city. Which is literally the second it starts. Does it pick up from there?
predator 2 is HILARIOUSLY abysmal The city of los angeles is the setting it never goes back to the jungle but thats not why its bad supercharged racist ass stereotypes abound in the form of the two rivaling gangs, whose war is the kickoff point for the plot (Columbians and Jamaicans) The Jamaican crime boss literally is a witch doctor that stands around in an alley and throws little skulls and shit on a trash can practicing voodoo [editline]4th February 2013[/editline] also it takes away the mystery of the predator in some half assed attempt to flesh it out. That thing it did in the first one, where it mimicked the sounds of human speech? It does it again. And again. And again. It loses its coolness. Plus the redesign of the monster itself looks really ugly compared to the first one
Blade Runner: 9/10 Finally saw this movie for the first time. Truly an incredible and unique movie. The atmosphere is breath-taking, the acting is excellent and the real sets and models were a welcome relief from years of computer generated shit. Also, this is probably one of the most depressing movies I've ever watched and that's a good thing because it made me care for it. I love how they continually used underlying themes throughout the movie, and showing the Replicants express different human emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, hatred, fear, relief). This movie is definitely up on my list of personal favorites now.
if your version didn't have the unicorn in it your film experience just lost 2000% because the 30 seconds of footage added in that cut adds a whole dimension to both deckard and the entire system of replicants and bladerunners, and the world itself. the implications given off are amazing. the ending is also.more ambiguous which makes it better cos it didn't need the closure from the theatrical cut
I saw the Final Cut so yes. Also I agree, the ending was fantastic. [editline]4th February 2013[/editline] [sp]Also, I strongly feel that Deckard was a Replicant[/sp]
also an education- 8/10. fantastic coming of age/romance drama, based in the 50s with Carey mulligans breakthrough role. fantastic acting and a brilliant script, i loved this movie. the notebook - 9/10 I've seen this several times and the only girl ive watched it with is my mum is that bad? I dont care one of my favourite films. my favourite romance film definitely. offers by far the single biggest emotional response from any film I've ever seen, and its just as strong each time I watch it. its both hugely fucking depressing but also totally beautiful, Ryan gosling is very very lovable in it and it seems he really put himself into the part, and I still stand by my thinking that Rachel mcadams playing allie is the most attractive any woman has ever looked on film. she's a 12/10, as well as giving a great performance with a character who is more complex than she at first comes off, especially towards the end. amazing film.
Also, Film and Television getting moved all the way down to the bottom of the front page is annoying. Have to scroll down to get to it as opposed to it being prominently displayed at the top. Why couldn't it be in the spotlight indefinitely?
Mama, 8.5/10 for the kind of weird ending, otherwise it was a brilliant movie [editline]4th February 2013[/editline]
evil dead 2
Fucking amazing movie
seven psychopaths was alright like a 3/5, huh, seven psychopaths was alright like a 3/5. walkins was funny and sam rockwell was great as always
Django Unchained 6.5/10 obvious spoilers about characters and the plot I watched it at the cinema and I have to say that it was not that great, it was mostly hit or miss. Perhaps I had to high expectations in the back of my head of the new movie of Quentin, although I went there openminded without any real expectations. What I really liked were the sharp pictures and landscapes, the scenery was incredibly done. Every room and town looked amazing, especially with the snow. It's nice to see a western themed movie with more snow instead of deserts. Also some of the characters were pretty amazing. Calvin, Schultz, Stephen and some of the henchmen. The relation between Schultz and Django was great, so I was pretty sad when Schultz got brutally shot. Furthermore some of the dialogues were terrific and very entertaining, like the relation between Calvin and Stephen. The music was also pretty good, I liked the Django theme a lot. On the other hand therer were a lot of things I disliked, the movie was to long. Usually I don't mind long movies as long as they keep the pacing right and do it well. But during the last third of the movie I was getting impatient and wondered when the movie would finally end. After the massive shootout at Candyland, the movie just dragged on. How Django was captured and went back to avenge everyone including Mister Calvin. For some reason I found it not that interesting, Django's quest for Retribution was not that engaging. I did not feel like he had to go back and just kill everyone and blow up Candyland. Also some of the dialogues were a miss, like the guy who tries to cut Djangos nuts off. I found it pretty cheesy at best. I found Django himself quite a boring character. Another thing that was annoying was the constant songs that were being played during different scences, the songs were great but it was overdone, so that the individual scences lost some of the power to them. I was like "oh another song again". The plot itself was fairly interesting at first but once it turned into a quest of saving his wife, I found less interesting. The whole thing with the Mandingo fighting was also a bit boring. I felt like the plot drifted away. Althoug that might be me. Slavery played a large role in the movie but at times it tried to show of the gruesome way of slavery which did not fit with the overall mood of the movie. Especially when Schultz gets these flashy memories and decides to shoot Calvin, it did not fully fit together. One thing that I really disliked was the excessive violence, it's not that I don't like but the shootout in Candyland was a tad to much. I did not fit with the movie and felt out of place, it reminded me of Planet Terror. Usually I found the amount of violence in Tarrantinos work to be great, it was always gruesome but brisk. In this one it was just a mess and just a bit to much for my taste. It felt like there was tons of blood only for the sake of violence, to faceless for my taste. Anyway there are many things that I am still a bit unsure about, I think I need to rewatch the movie again to make up my mind. In brief terms it was an enjoyable ride, it started pretty good and I laughed a lot about the dark and grotesque humor. It had some memorable moments but later on it got to long and the pacing was a bit weird. There are many elements and factors that are introduced but none of them are really that well presented, the narrative focus of the story was incohorent. Also I never felt any suspense, only the scence where the dogs ripped the Mandingo fighter apart. Sorry if these paragraphes are a mess but I have a hard time expressing myself towards the movie. At the end I was just disapointed, perhaps I watched it with the wrong mindset.
The Imposter (2012) Credit to Scot for posting this one on the prev page. Totally absorbing right from the start because the Imposter himself is revealed for who he really is so you would expect the docu to be pointless, not so. About 3 quarts of the way through you just can't wait for the facts to be revealed and I was nearly jumping round the room just wanting to know more. All the real life characters are interesting parts of the story and the suspense is built very nicely by the team who made this. This is a masterclass in docu making and if you don't enjoy watching this then theres something wrong with you. I highly recommend this docu film.
