Pi was a bit out there I have to admit.
if by out there you mean devoid of story and logic
if by out there you mean devoid of story and logic
Still pretty mesmerising to watch. I've yet to see The Fountain, but people say the Director's Cut is the best option. Why can't more companies give the director final cut privileges..
I've tried to watch The Fountain like 3 times now. But its always just as boring. I'm not a big fan of the multiple timeline universe clusterfuck stories.
Hunger games, 8/10 Movie was alright, loved the book(s) more though, seems like the movie rushed a few key scenes in order to condense the book, which sorta hurt the emotional impact of the scenes. Some changes to the plot weren't very good in my opinion too. I loved the touches with the Capitol, the [sp]berry execution[/sp] though.
are u being serious right now? its a psychological thriller but its not even remotely scary come on
The majority of it where it's just [sp]her face on everything or the generic mirror scare[/sp] it's like whatevs bruv. But when she [sp]goes back and flicks the light on and there's someone there[/sp] that freaked me out mainly because it was late at night where i do much light flicking.
if by out there you mean devoid of story and logic
jesus, take the realism rod out your ass. so what, a bunch of shit they say in the movie is either techno babble or untrue. this was his first movie as well and he was obviously paying homage to david lynch with it. there still is a plot, it's just inconsequential, the movie itself is merely a chronicle of a man seeking and eventually seeing forever, the meaning of life, the truth behind it all, etc. whatever, and loosing it completely in the process and coming across the consequences of looking and finding what he wanted. the ending was pgood as well, as a whole. [editline]27th March 2012[/editline] also i'd just like to state there is not one arnofsky film i do not love. being on the topic of him and all. [editline]27th March 2012[/editline] oh yeah, and the soundtrack for PI is fucking incredible

That's probably the best part of the movie. She's something else. [editline]27th March 2012[/editline]
he was obviously paying homage to david lynch with it.
I'm not sure about this. There's influences, but that movie was more a personal destruction.
what you mean? PI was personal destruction or eraserhead was? and if you compare PI and eraserhead side by side they are somewhat similar. both have highly intelligent and meek main characters, they both fantasize about having sexual encounters with their neighbors, and both characters are placed a burden they either weren't meant to carry, can't carry, a combination of both or something completely different that boils down to the fact that the burden is to much. oh yeah, and when confronting the burden they both either become completely mad or have momentary insanity.
i watched eraserhead btw cant say i enjoyed it all that much
i completely forgot. the use of older or cheaper quality black and white cameras. [editline]27th March 2012[/editline]
i watched eraserhead btw cant say i enjoyed it all that much
think you said that before then i said i watched it high and thought it was all fried gold. i actually wrote a pretty decent analysis of the film.
Fright Night (The 2011 remake one) - 6.8 Actually quite liked it, it wasn't great, wasn't terrible but was just as a whole quite entertaining.
and if you compare PI and eraserhead side by side they are somewhat similar. oh yeah, and when confronting the burden they both either become completely mad or have momentary insanity.
I'm with you on the confronting insanity thing, but as Lynch said, his movie was "spiritual" kind of like Begotten. But with Aronofsky's work he wanted his characters to be more representative of the madness. Same with RFAD. Lynch just wanted to delve in a thousand personalities at once, like with Blue Velvet. His movies require rewatches to fully get into them. [editline]27th March 2012[/editline]
the use of older or cheaper quality black and white cameras.
Fair enough, but most director's debuts are like that.
arnofsky could be argued to be a mini-lynch that uses more direct methods at trippiness. more mainstream and less avant garde and abstract but still mindfucky but i know what you mean. lynch's films have this depraved dark ethereal timelessness sort of tone slathered all over it in addition to the headiness and indirect aversions and metaphors. even the boring one with nick cage. well except twin peaks. even though twin peaks had some of lynch's mindfuckery (the ending, in a big way.. ANNIE, ANNIE *toothpaste*) it was relatively normal. it all leads to a stark contrast to arnofsky's shit because his shit is all direct and much less abstract. you take PI and compare it to Eraserhead it's incredibly obvious even though the two resemble each other. i mean eraserhead has probably 20 thousand more polarizing mindfuck scenes. shit like that. PI is a much more conventional movie when it comes to how it plays out. its plot and themes are more apparent and less subdued. the one he did for Disney, "the straight story" or something. when i had a chance to see it i decided not to because it seemed insanely boring and more like a cohen bros film. never seen dune either.
I'm late to the arguement as usual, but I think Hollywood needs to find a mix between Animatronics/Pratical Effects, and CGI. Jurassic Park and Starship Troopers are good examples. Those movies combined the two different types of effects quite well, everything has a certain "weight" to it. I'm sure if they were made today, with the same techniques but better technology, everything would be much more real looking.
thank god what i wrote made sense. I'M GETTING BETTER THANK THE LORD

Also Dune is meant to suck ass, I'll watch it when a definitive cut is released.
You're gonna wait a long time then. Lynch disowned Dune and pretty much refuses to acknowledge its existence.
i thought the remake of the supposed horror lynch made (which killed his career till blue velvet) was the good dune movie? (the one that came after lynch-dune) kinda funny how blue velvet got lynch and hopper back into the mainstream.

I'd be really happy for that to be the first BW movie I saw. Watch Modern Times & City Lights.
If we're gonna bring that up: First B&W movie I saw.

hugo 10/10 maybe it's just because all the shit i've been watching is dark, dreary, macabre, melancholy, sad, whatever. but this movie was really sweet and touching. could have been a tad deeper though. so 9/10 actually, just cause it felt a little shallow.

I don't think there's a thing he's made which I haven't enjoyed. Even from his debut his personality and technique shines in every one of his movies.
honestly i thought it would have been the beginning of the end for him. but god damn for a guy who knows how to really smear macho testosterone rage into movies with butcher knives and joe pesci he can really melt a cold heart.
Wow, good one. I'd be really happy for that to be the first BW movie I saw. Watch Modern Times & City Lights.
yeah, thanks to my history class teacher. actually we tried to watch Modern Times last year but i think we never finished it.

Kill Bill Vol. 1: 8/10
The Hunger Games 8/10 I found it enjoyable. Would've been a 9 if it weren't for the PG-13 and the shakey cam. [editline]28th March 2012[/editline] Also, they should've introduced the competitors better, throughout the movie I had basically no clue over who were actually dead or alive.
