Haven't posted here in a while, though I haven't watched many films lately as I've had a lot of stuff on.
Over the past month or so I've watched El Mariachi, Dawn of the Dead (the original) and just now I watched The Breakfast Club.
El Mariachi is a fun movie, and manages to be a decent action thriller while still having that slight tongue-in-cheek tone. It'd probably give it a 7/10, but due to the circumstances under which it was made (shoestring budget) I found it quite inspirational, and I'd probably bump it up to 7.5/10 in terms of how much I enjoyed it.
I felt similarly about Dawn of the Dead, I was expecting it to just be 'killing zombies in a mall' à la Dead Rising, but the timespan it takes place over made it much more interesting [sp]the way they manage to build this Archetypal American suburban home in the saferoom is brilliant[/sp]. I'd give this an 8/10, definitely the best zombie movie I've seen (though I've only really seen a handful).
I got it in a boxset with Night of the Living Dead (watched already) and Day of the Dead which I've yet to watch, but will check out soon.
The Breakfast Club, I'm not sure. I enjoyed it, and even though Hughes deconstructed the teenage stereotypes, I still found it a bit too cliche. Some great moments, and definitely worth watching. I feel like I maybe missed out by watching it past that age myself, though. 7.5, 8/10, maybe?
I FINALLY got my hands on "Drive". I have a feeling that I'm going to be disappointed due to all the hype it got, but we'll see.
It's a style-over-substance movie, but in a good way. Kind of like how "Where The Wild Things Are" didn't have much of a plot but was still good.

I got pretty hyped about it near the DVD/Blu Ray release, due to the serious amount of praise.
It lived up to the hype for sure.

The Avengers (2012) - 4/10
Terrible remake of that movie starring Uma Thurman, what the hell? it had nothing to do with that movie, and no bear suits either.
[sp]8.6/10 actually, it was damn good, I feel like I have an issue with the movie but I don't know what it is,I know I have issue with how quickly Bruce Banner was able to to control The Hulk, and how little screen time and development Hawkeye got, but there is something else, not sure what it is though.[/sp]

I thought the attention was focused on the experience and tension rather than style.
The plot was there too, but wasn't complex.

i must see this immediately.
saw Burn After Reading, awesome. I personally found it funnier than Big Lebowski, which will get a lot of people giving me odd looks, but I loved this movie.
Will watch Raising Arizona.
Requiem for a Dream
Awesome camerawork and editing. I liked how the rapid cuts served as music at points, the split-screening, and the fridge.
The narration, though, I didn't enjoy too much. It was a bit too dark and gritty. And the ending was just [sp]totally unsatisfactorily, seeing as no one achieved anything at all. I know that the message the film is sending is "don't to drugs", but eh please take the audience into consideration. Sitting through a hundred minutes, through the characters' ups and downs, only to see them all end up somewhere awful isn't very fun.[/sp]
[sp]Harry sacrificing himself in order to give Marion a wake-up call, would have been better, even as clichéd as it would be.[/sp]
Also, [sp] I will never be able to look at Jennifer Connelly's beautiful face the same way again. R.I.P her innocence after that ass to ass dildo-pounding scene :( [/sp]
The man from earth
8.5/10
Very interesting movie, I've been thinking about watching this movie for a long time and it was well worth it.
This movie definitely has that "either you hate it or you love it" feel. But for me, this movie kept me interested from beginning to end.
Very good watch, though acting could've been better in some places.

IMO it's more of a love it or be narrow-minded or intellectually impaired. Because, let's face it. If you hate it, it's either because you can't get past the fact that a man lived for 14.000 years in a fictive story OR that you find the religious discussion later on offensive. That you don't like facing challenges in fear that you might change your views on humanity.
It's a fantastic What-if scenario that gets you thinking a lot about humanity as a whole and our relationship with our history and religion.
One point that it brings that you can't dispute is that we've got a way too distanced relationship with our early history and attribute way too much super-natural stuff to our religions. What it does is underline that the age of mystery and divine powers didn't die out as we got modern, it was never there at all.

There are more than two reasons you could hate it. One might not be into that genre of film or perhaps not like the way it's filmed.
Avengers was pretty good, I'd say a solid 8.5/10 for sure. I was expecting to not like it since every avengers movie thus far besides iron man 1 has ranged between "mediocre" and "awful" (with the possible exception of the norton hulk flick, which I still have yet to see).
Lots of solid humor and decent action scenes. The conflicts between the members of the group itself were the best parts. Tom Hiddleston did a good job as a classic villain without straying into dumb camp TOO often. I just wish they'd picked a better actor for Black Widow. Scarlett Johansen kind of sucks tbh.
[editline]10th May 2012[/editline]
I mean its one thing to have a poorly acted, barely fleshed out female character for the sake of sex appeal, which is a cheap, bad filmmaking decision in the first place. But its another layer of awful to start taking this poorly acted character seriously and trying to go somewhere with it.
Cowboy Bebop Session 8 "Waltz For Venus". 9.5/10
The last couple of minutes were really moving. The second Rocco took down the guy I knew what was coming and coincidentally I happened to get something in both my eyes at the same time...
I get the feeling I'm not going to be able to handle the last episode.
Man on the ledge - 6.5/10
I'd be lying to say it didn't entertain me for its duration, but it wasn't anything special.
Saw "The Avengers" today, got the early show so I could actually get a seat. My friend and I paid only $8 for the ticket (in 3D), so it wasn't too bad.
Here's the thing. I know a few people are going to rate me dumb, disagree, whatever, but I think the movie is somewhat overrated. The acting was spotty in a few areas, and the first half hour of dialog seemed to only exist just to try sophisticated and complex. I personally think they over-complicated the whole setup. In essence, powerful cube, capable of making portals into space, that's all there really is to it.
Beyond that, the special effects were great. I did feel like the CGI was a bit...obvious at times, especially involving Thor and the hammer, but beyond that it was well integrated.

appearances can be... deceptive
Radio (2003): 6.5/10
Fifth Viewing of A Clockwork Orange (1971): 9.8/10

Then you "just don't like it" That is not Hate it or love it. I don't HATE a movie that isn't to my tastes or is poorly produced, i just don't find it interesting. So either it's not a love it or hate it movie, or people are way too passionate about all of the wrong things.
Godzilla vs Destroyah (1995) 10/10
Iron Sky - 9/10
It didn't really live up to my expectations, I would only give it a 8-8.5 if it was a major Hollywood release.
The CGI was awesome though, the fact they made a superb movie with so little funding and resources is amazing.
You give it a 9 and say it didn't live up to your expectations? Really?
You give it a 9 and say it didn't live up to your expectations? Really?
I worded it badly, I meant that I expected the movie to be more action-oriented.
Iron Man (9/10)
Incredible Hulk (6,5/10)
[sp]I have issue with how quickly Bruce Banner was able to to control The Hulk, [/sp]
[sp]At the end of The Incredible Hulk, Banner has learned to control the hulk. In The Avengers he is kinda forced by Loki to become the Hulk, at the flying fortress. Later, he becomes the Hulk, because he wants to.[/sp]
Requiem for a Dream
[sp]only to see them all end up somewhere awful isn't very fun.[/sp]

that part of the movie always made me feel uneasy about the entire thing, I know it's wrong to dislike a movie for dumb things like that but that's just how I feel.
I probably will watch it again soon though.
Red Tails. 5/10
Bad acting, no excitement in the fight scenes, loads of cliches, dumb hollywood shit ([sp]blowing up a destroyer (more like a battleship) with machineguns? Seriously?[/sp]), the "bad guy" of the film was completely uninteresting and to top it off the black man just had to die first.
In my opinion, it has one of the best endings ever filmed. Literally nothing good happens to any of the characters we've grown to like in the movie.
well yes, it is a fantastic scene, I just personally feel uneasy watching it. I very rarely feel that way too.
It's meant to be uneasy to watch though, that's the point. [sp]everything fucked up. No one won, everyone was a victim. no one's dreams were fulfilled, and they all ruined their lives. It's a humbling ending, different from other endings. Hell it's even different from other sad endings because it's not like anyone just died or whatever. They're punished worse than that. Harry losing his arm and probably prison afterwards, his mum going insane, his best friend dealing with withdrawal and racism and his girlfriend stuck doing sex shows to fuel her addiction. It's disgusting and it's all stuff worse than death which I think it's so powerful and disturbing, especially compared to other sad endings. Because it's more than just sad. It's totally fucked.[/sp]
It's meant to be uneasy to watch though, that's the point.
I KNOOOOOOOOW.

As a cinematic experience, it is supreme.
but as a PERSONAL experience, in terms of me as a human being, I feel bad watching it because of me. :)
Bicentennial Man
8/10
I haven't read Asimov's book, but I really liked this movie. Touching story with a good fitting soundtrack and great actors.

That was the most bizarre yet fascinating movie I have ever experienced.
10/10.
